It's hard to believe how supertalls pop up out of nowhere in China and this one will be even China's tallest building when completed - 78m higher than SWFC.
Height: 570m / 1870ft
Floors: 117
Location: Huayuan Industry Park, Tianjin
Investor: Matsunichi Hi-Tech Ltd

I wonder how this impressive tower ended up being build in Tianjin... I was in Tianjin in 1997 and again in 2006, and the city still looks the same. Not many serious highrises. The only really high structure is that tv tower. But we see the same developement in other provincial cities. Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, etc all seem to get very talls or super talls nowadays. Still I rather see this building added to the Shanghai skyline.

What Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou has been doing for the last ten years is now being repeated by the "second tier" cities like Tianjin, Chengdu, Shenyang and Chongqing, which are simply playing catchup.
Nothing strange about this at all. :)

Too bad about the first design being axed; it was nice and graceful even if it did have a few awkward details. This second version is...interesting. I don't know why the top has been given such a disjointed and visually (and physically) massive crown--really kills the sense of grace and height that the basic form has. Should still look nice from street-level looking up, though.

I love plenty of Chinese skyscrapers, but there is a bunch of shit too. You're always going to have a lot both when a country is developing as rapidly as China is. Actually, I find most people (at SSP anyway) very positive towards China's developments. Dubai on the other hand....

Unbelievable how much is getting build in Tianjin at the moment. I've been in Tianjin twice, the first time in 1997 and the second time in 2006. Nothing much had changed about the city in those 9 years, and it was still a dirty, provincial mediocre city, compared to Beijing or Shanghai. No serious skyscrapers back then... I am looking with great interest at all these new developments.

I generally love China's towers but this thing is abysmal, both the fins and the diamond studded designs; in the middle of empty desert no less.
Back to the drawing board I say.

I'm surprised it took this long actually. Since it's basically Beijing's port , one would have expected that anything that wouldn't fly in Beijing to find an easy home in Tianjin. Considering that the major changes are in the south , one would have expected Beijing officials to start concentrating a little harder on the dongbei provinces.
Oh , PhxPavilion , no , that's not desert at all. It's basically a brownfield site. They all look like that here. Don't forget , this is China and it's been centuries since any of it was empty.

Maybe not desert but this looks largely empty and barren to me especially for a tower of this magnitude.

^^it's highly productive farmland, just the construction site has obviously been cleared to allow construction to occur.

Yes, it´s simply an ugly tower. Recently I read, that there are not so much tenants for the tower. I hope construction will be suspended soon.
