OK, my very first trip to this great mid-western city and the weather does NOT cooperate.
Cold, wind, rain, snow flurries -- and did I mention cold?
But, I was determined to see the sights and I saw more than enough to justify a return visit in better weather. STL Rocks!!!!

'Cause I'm an idiot.

Nice pictures of an underrated city. Under water parking and Saarinen's best.

Nope, not this time. This was just a one day adventure.
Next time I'll spend more time and get to see more areas of town.

Visiting St. Louis and not venturing into the neighborhoods is like sleeping next to an amazingly hot girl and not taking her clothes off.

It's a multi-phase plan. The first phase involves renovating the former Dillard's Building as condos, first-floor retail and an Embassy Suites hotel. The condos have been selling well, and I would expect full-out rehab to begin fairly soon.

The renovation of the Dillard's Building will also bring the demolition of the hideous skybridge over Washington Avenue. I cannot wait for that to happen.

Then comes the redevelopment of St. Louis Centre itself. The building won't be torn down, but you will not recognize it when they're done with it. It will feature ground-floor retail with condos/apartments above.

Here's a rendering of the Dillard's Building:

I stopped in downtown St. Louis when I was moving out to Denver. I thought it was amazing. I bet the inner city neighborhoods are great. I also really wish I would have seen the inner city neighborhoods. Same with Kansas City. I just saw downtown, and not the inner city neighborhoods.

Great photos though!

In my opinion, downtown is mediocre (and I say this as a booster of the city) because of the high bar the neighborhoods set, especially the heavy hitters the Central/Greater West End with 1,293 acre Forest park:

and Tower Grove South with its nicely scaled and positioned residential, victorian park, big and small commercial districts, and corner establishments in between. Hopefully this just raises the interest level for the neighborhoods and isn't seen as a slam of downtown (which is vastly better than 5 years ago).

In other words, don't just visit downtown when you come to st. louis! :)

Here's a thread I did several months ago that really shows off the city's innards:
