A very short tour of remote Churchill Canada, in northern Manitoba.
I took these when I was 18. I was far more of a novice then, not to mention that I wasn't as enthusiastic about urban photography as I am now, so these suck.

The grain terminal and inukshuk is such a weird juxtaposition. I wish there were more photos.

How far north is Churchill? How far is Winnipeg? How big is Churchill? It's a much different town being that far north. I thought there would be more trees.

Churchill is tundra country. The permafrost prevents deep rooted plants like trees from growing. Winnipeg is close to the U.S. border.

One web site indicates that the straight line distance between Winnipeg Int. Airport and Churchill is approximately 1004 kilometers. It is a long way north of Winnipeg.
I would really like to see more pictures of it.

I see. I was thinking that the tundra was up in Northwestern Territories, or Nunavut. I didn't think it reached Manitoba. :frog:

The tundra biome does exist along the southern coast of Hudson's bay.

Okay, to answer everyones questions...
There arent any more pictures of churchill that are any good. I took these years ago, and my photography was dismal then.
Churchill is a very, very small town. Its population is usually less than 1000, and the only land line connecting it to the rest of Canada is a supply railroad to the south, so its best reached by air. There aren't many trees on the tundra, but there are some specialized small trees that grow in clusters about 12 foot high adapted to tundra.
I was in Winnipeg, and it is a major city compared to Churchill. I have some pictures of Winnipeg (Only a couple dozen or so) but they really arent that great.

This about does it as far as trees are concerned.

Wow, a thread of Churchill is something that's really unexpected. It's nice to see for the first and probably last time.
