9th and Figueroa Tower

During the building boom of the late 1980's and early 1990's, there was a proposal for what would have been Los Angeles' tallest building. Known as the 9th and Figueroa Tower, it would have eclipsed the height of the current tallest highrise, The US Bank Tower. The US Bank Tower was completed in 1989, has 73 floors, and stands at 1018 ft. The proposal for 9th and Fig Tower was designed to have 90 floors and stand at 1270 ft. However, in 1990 the project was canceled due to economic reasons. (if anyone has more information on this, please share). In the early 90's, Los Angeles had a glut of excess office space that only recently has been absorbed. Had this tower been built, it would stand where the Concerto Towers are currently under construction.

I think they could have gone with a better design, that doesn't look particularly appealing.

Indeed M II A II R II K. From here it appears really boxy and plain. Not only that, but it throws off the skyline balance of LA; one of its nicest features is the tapering of towers as they radiate from the US Bank Tower.

Yea I was thinking it would throw off the balance of the skyline, unless they built another tall one on the other side of the skyline to match to balance it out.

This would have pushed the boundaries of the downtown skyline further out which would have be good. However, this building just looks so.....90s (and not in a good way). This would have done more harm than good IMO.

The last thing the LA skyline needs is another box.:yuck:

The only thing great about this proposal was its height. The design is boxy and uninspired. It looks like the old WTC. No thanks.

It was best left unbuilt.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head with this one.

exactly right westside. I love height, but not if it looks like that.
