STRAIGHT OUTTA CONC-TON

Is there anything better than a state capital on a nice spring day? I say no.
Concord was named the seat of governace of the Granite State in 1808. Today the city is home to 40,000 persons and several insurance companies. It is located on the Merrimack River and is a delightful town. It looks like a city in New Hampshire should.

There are your enemies, the Red Coats and the Tories. They are ours, or this night Molly Stark sleeps a widow!

Before dying in 1809, he wrote:

Live free or die. Death is not the worst of evils.

The first half of that was made the state motto in 1945.

WOW!!! what great pics. I'm originally from the East Coast but moved away when I was just 1. My mom is always telling me about back in New England and she always has nice things to say about NH. Concord looks like a place I could definitely live. Right up there with Burlington.!!!

Awesome photos! Concord IS a very nice place, but it's also one with its share of problems like every other city. Right around downtown, everything is quite clean and kept-up, but there are other parts of town that are certainly not so tidy...

Living in Manchester for a few years, I made it up to Concord regularly... Even had a chance to see Warren Zevon play there once! :)

"Werewolves of Concord." Nice ring to it! :haha:

Nice comprehensive tour of Concord. I can't remember ever seeing a thread of the city.

The 1819 statehouse, the oldest in the nation where the assembly meets in it's original chambers.

Are you sure about this? Maryland has been using the same building in the middle of State Circle since the early 1700s. Since the capitol is surrounded by a circular road, there's not reall room for expanding. So, I would guess that Maryland uses the same rooms in the same building that they have always used.

Thundertubs
04-21-2008, 06:17 PM
^^^ A plaque said that it's the oldest statehouse where the legislature still occupies it's original chambers. According to the good folks at Wikipedia, the Maryland statehouse "is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use, dating to 1772." Perhaps they moved the legislative chambers at some point? New Hampshire's claim seems to be a bit of a technicality.

Ah come on now, Goody... Everyone wants to see Nashua! After all, it's none other than northern Massachusetts' shopping district! :) Well okay, Nashua shares that glorious title with Salem, but still...

Also, I probably only deserve to be a 1/4 NH forumer, seeing as I only lived there for around two and a half years... :)

I sure do need to get out and take some pics. I actually did take a few pics of the new footbridge across the Merrimack. Its gorgeous. You wouldn't hardly recognize the place if came to visit. Thats in a good way.

Same thing with Concord. There was a new building downtown that was just finished. Its not tall but it fits in perfectly and looks amazing.

As for Nashua...it has a beautiful downtown but its primarily just a shopping town with BAE systems. Portsmouth is the place you really should want to see. It is such a gem.

Thanks everyone!!

I only count as a fraction of an NH forumer as well. I only got here 6 months ago and hope to be back in the Midwest by years end. My allegence is split fully between New Jersey and the Upper Midwest.

I have about 10 older Nashua pics and will either go down and take some more or tack them on to another thread. It has a nice looking downtown, which is good enough for me.

I've never been to Portsmouth, but it's on the list.
