If you have any other suggestions just let me know. I remember RTH requesting an environmental thread.

I just wanted to say that I don't care if you go off-topic. I've personally done that a lot of times.
What I don't want to see is bickering and head butting, as that leads to off-topic discussion and distract readers and therefore effectively kills the topic.
If you have issues with this or have suggestions than please do type them down.

The new mods are way too trigger-happy when it comes to deleting posts and are way too tolerant of raisethehammer, who continues to post nonsense about "idiots" here and "idiots" there and accuses half of the people on the city of having their "heads up their asses".
He also seems to have added the word "squelcher" to his vocabulary in the last couple of weeks. I guess there is nothing wrong with that but it is annoying to see him overuse his fancy new word.
I believe that SteelTown and flar are both good people but raisethehammer clearly has them in his back pocket and prevents their judgment from being objective.

Warnings have been sent. We are now at the tipping point where if rules are broken again actions will definitely happen. I didn't make up the rules. It's just my job to make sure that the rules are being enforced to create an enjoyable and productive forum.
I'm and I know flar are getting tired of having to edit post to soften them up or having to delete them. Everyone can do their part and simply IGNORE post you believe to be offensive in any way, take the high road. If you don't and you feel the mods are being hard on you than you should have simply just ignored the post first the start.
It's time to stop trolling and add onto the discussion.

I just wanted to add another suggestion. If you find a post that's offensive or have an issue with it click on this button http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/images_pb/buttons/report.gif and report it. Once that's done some kind of action has to be taken.

I do that all the time, but I can't tell if anything was done.
I have a question: If an individual gets banned, what's stopping them from making a new username? Is the IP address banned or what?
SteelTown
06-04-2008, 05:38 AM
Yes, the IP address is banned.
Whenever a post is reported some sort of action will be done. I suppose next time one of the mods will notify the person what kind of action that took place.

Do you get to see who reported it?
SteelTown
06-04-2008, 05:56 AM
Yes only the mods can.
You mean the post reporting goes somewhere? I report them all the time but it never seems to do anything because the behaviour continues, and administrators don't seem to take me seriously, so I usually end up taking things 'into my own hands', so to speak.

Agreed!!! 100%!!!!
You can't post something on this board which illicits discussion. But, you can call people names (i.e. idiots, squelchers, etc), degrade them (i.e. Andrew Dreschel personally degraded because of his stature and the fact he's a responsible cat owner who leashes his pet), and paint large groups of people with the generalization brush (i.e. sad fat 905ers, Borington, etc), with complete impunity.
Honestly, I haven't seen very much in the way of 'trolling' at all on this board. What I have seen are people who aren't open to others points of view.

I'm just a lurker and occasional poster,* but I'd like to register my voice in protest of the banning of Goldfinger. A free-for-all style of give-and-take is far, far more desirable and productive than micro-managing threads that have the potential to offend some of the hypersensitive posters on this forum.

Do yourself a favour and stop working under the assumption that I am Goldfinger, because you look a little bit sillier each time you reference "Goldfinger/BCTed". I played a trick on you to make you believe that he and I were the same person and it worked far too well.

I have already conceded that it was a trollish thing to do in some of my many soliloquies [it was an exception --- anyway, I am done explaining myself], but it was also easy and delicious.

Hi, just checking in here after viewing the Stinson thread that was locked. May I make a suggestion to certain people on the board who whinge and throw hissy fits every time certain other people say things they don't like or agree with?

I can't even find this thread that was locked...
why doesn't this forum have the option to ignore a certain members posts? just like any other regular forum, this would easily keep the useless bickering to a minimum, and make the threads more informative.
There is an ignore function on here. Click on the user's name and select "view public profile." On the blue bar running across that screen there is an option to add the user to your ignore list.

flar is seriously out of control with his deletion of posts. In ryan_mcgreal's thread about converting the west Mountain to one-way, I replied with "Are you a troll?" and it was deleted immediately.
Two things that I find wrong with this deletion:
1. I was just kidding around and trying to make light of the "troll" fun we have had in recent threads.
2. If I had written the exact same post as ryan_mcgreal, I am betting that it would have been deleted.
I have watched my posts (and those of many others) disappear on a regular basis over the last little while --- a number of these posts did not involve anything contentious. Goodness, there were a couple of times when raisethehammer and I were actually getting along and our posts were deleted.
Entire chunks of dialogue are being removed and leaving gap-toothed conversations in some threads. I would rather read an archived thread that includes some contention than read something that is full of disconnects.
flar also essentially accused me of being a troll when I highlighted what I honestly found to be the only real piece of new information on the Connaught project in the Harry Stinson weekend article --- given flar's trigger finger, I am actually somewhat surprised that that post was not deleted as well.
What is going on here?

Banned me for what exactly?
When there was a bit of hubbub about McMaster being mentioned in an article, but not Hamilton, I quoted an article from that day which mentioned three universities but not their host cities. The topic of the article happened to be Henry Morgentaler, who had no relevance to me other than that he happened to be the top story of the day and thus made for a convenient source for an example, and you falsely accused me of selecting that specific subject matter strictly to incite raisethehammer. Your accusation was completely false and ungrounded --- I had no such intention with the Morgentaler thing. Also, had raisethehammer indeed gotten out of sorts, that would have been his doing, not mine.
I have been steadfast in my comments and stuck to my guns, but I have been courteous for the most part. People have treated me like absolute dirt, telling me to get lost, calling me a troll, a "genuis", "Mrs. Ted", etc. etc., and save for calling one person a jerk, I have not retaliated.
You are biased. You are also too trigger happy. I would like to see you removed as a moderator.

Ted, most of your posts are simply there to point out the problems in other people's posts or to air your issues with their tone. If you really have a problem with someone's post, use the report post button, don't derail the topic by commenting on posting style. If another person's post is really causing a problem, the mods can deal with it if you let them know through the proper channels. Discussing it within the thread starts fights and causes more problems than solutions.
Because you consistently post commentary that is centred around: a) how others posts are worse than yours, b) how the moderation team is handling things poorly, c) how you are unfairly treated and d) how nothing is wrong with your own posts, I consistently ignore your posts and get frankly annoyed with how they derail actual discussions.
You have taken things very personally, but you have to realize that no one is here to gang up on others and no one's opinions are squelched. But you seem to have a perception that the world is against you.
It probably seems that way because you have created a situation where people are automatically on the defensive as soon as they see your name attached to a post. This may seem unfair but you've brought it on yourself, and the only way to reverse it is to stop arguing in public and start posting more constructively.
I'm sorry if this sounds mean or whatever, but I'm speaking honestly as a reader and contributor. You can take from it what you like. I don't agree with banning people, and I barely agree with removing posts, but it seems like every time there is a totally derailed discussion, you are involved. I'm not saying that each one is your fault nor necessarily instigated by you, but it's as if you are magnetically drawn to these "flame wars".
You gotta learn to ignore the posts that hit you personally, just like the majority of us ignore your posts.

I agree with Coalmine, and I've suggested it to Ted several times - add constructive comments and IDEAS to the discussion instead of just ragging on everyone.
His response is always - 'stop telling me what to do'.
Fair enough. But the act gets tiring.
You must have something good to add to the discussion...please do. I'll be more than happy to carry on civil conversations with you if you bring great thoughts and ideas to the table.

It takes two to argue. It takes more of a man to hold your tongue than to insist on having the last word. It's so easy to be a shit disturber on the internet where there's really nothing to lose. Let's just stop adding more shit to the same pile. It really is getting old.
I guess BCTed has nothing better to do. How sad.

Please do not forget that I have received a very cold reception on here almost from the start by doing things like defending Wal-Mart. If I am quick to defend myself, it is because I have always been quickly attacked, so it's a vicious cycle and it doesn't necessarily begin with me. My biggest transgression is probably that repetition can get annoying.

I do not "rag" on everyone. You do a great deal of "ragging".
No, my response has been "I do not have to make posts of a certain flavour just to please you." If I have more of a tendency to poke holes in others' silly plans to construct 100 story towers rather than to propose 150 story tower ideas of my own, that should be fine. I'm sorry that that brings out the incivility in you, but that's your problem.
I have explained myself on here a trillion times over ---- let's not worry about me all the time. I have what I consider to be a valid complaint about flar's extreme trigger finger --- it has gotten to the point where you cannot post a simple joke. I have been simply bewildered by some of his deletions and I am not the only one. Please don't just dismiss my complaint out of hand just because it is coming from me --- that is what has happened to this point and as far as I know, I am still allowed to have my voice heard.
Welcome to the board Flar and Steeltown! :notacrook:
I think we should welcome you Adam :)
Hey Flar, I have a London, ON-related question if you don't mind?
I was doing some stuff for work, and noticed there is a Main St in a very strange part of the city, complete South end by like Colonol Talbot & Longwoods area.
Now was this ever a little village that was eventually incorporated in London, or was this just some weird subdivision? I've noticed some parks called "Lambeth"... was that the name of the village back-in-the-day?
Thanks man!
Yeah, that Main St. is in Lambeth. It's a small town that's part of London now.
Ah sweet! Thanks, Flar! :)
Now I know... and knowing is half the battle!
