On the seating aspect, they aren't padded. They had some sample seats at the PNE. They are an improvement though.

If you were to ask your sibling, parent, or cousin what the current logo is, you would have a hard time getting the right answer even if you presented a collection of various logos. As PaperTiger mentioned, lay people don't know and don't care.

I wouldn't call it unimaginative, that's subjective and doesn't really mean anything, but the new logo doesn't fit with what BC Place is. It's a stadium, I think sports and entertainment. Other than the components appearing unbalanced the logo looks all right, but it's overly conservative and feels like it would better fit a financial institution.

The BC Place logo isn't important to the public, it will primarily be use in business to business communications. BC Place doesn't market its self directly to consumers, thats the job of the Lions and Whitecaps.

There already was more subtle lighting on top: 1) the up-lighting on the masts and 2) the LED-illuminated roof. The stadium looked sleek, thin and aerodynamic before, as if it could fly and slice through air. With the nest of Christmas lights strung high above, it now appears more thick, messy and top-heavy. It was an eagle before; now it's more like a dodo.

But it does look a bit tacky and ostentatious. It does remind you of Harbour Centre. They do remind you of Christmas lights out of season (even if they are LED). It was cool and clean before; now it's getting a little bit silly and superfluous.

In conclusion, the cable lights tarnish the natural sleek lines and thin profile of the new roof and run the risk of making the stadium slightly laughable.

It was cooler before.

I absolutely agree.

That was my point, the stadium and the tenants are what is in people’s minds. The logo for the letter head of a quasi-governmental agency is irrelevant to the general public.

The stadium looks fantastic! Should be quite the spectable tomorrow night! I look forward to seeing all of the pictures.

Once again the draping system shows its ugly face. However, i will reserve judgement until the game on Sunday.

As for the corporate logo. I think that it could be much better. Once the title sponsorship branding becomes a part of it, the logo should have a lot of facetime.

Much like the Saddledome in Calgary. This logo is seen constantly. It`s important from marketing perspective that they get it right.

Yup, from Robson you're looking directly at dozens of interior flood lights on the opposite side of the interior. Unless your condo is right at level with the ring you're not going to see glare like that (the poor quality camera phone exagerrates it). If you are at level... well, time to sue Pavco I guess.

I tried to buy Whitecaps tickets on ticketmaster and could only get nosebleeds for $110 each. Contrast that to $42 for the Lions in the lower bowl vs Calgary. I would much rather see the Whitecaps but never at that price. I paid $12.50 per seat for the last Whitecaps game I went to (special offer).

I'm not sure you can consider any seats in the lower level "nosebleeds". those tics are for the club seating. Yes, expensive, but probbaly some of the best seats/views in the house. The same seats for Lions are $125. Try craigslist - tons available.

I also heard 43,500 this afternoon. Few concerning things I've discovered for tomorrow.

- Ticketmaster apparently entered the wrong configuration and along with messing up labelling some fans could end up without a seat.

- Apparently the roof won't be 100% complete for awhile. Some gaps are only temporarily complete and if it poured tomorrow some fans could get wet.

Source:http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/football/lions/Despite+kinks+Lions+welcome+fans+Eskimos+their+lair/5479753/story.html

Also, am I the only one who just figured out that not every seat has a cup holder? Some new photos I've seen show different types of seats, some look not as comfortable and they do not seem to be equipped with a cup holder. My assumption is they're located in the cheaper seat sections, and this is probably the standard thing to do in stadiums. Still a bit of a let down though.

According to the Weather Network, the forcast looks good for this afternoon and evening (i.e., a mixture of sun and clouds with only 10% probability of precipitation). If this forcast holds, then spectators will be getting the full experience tonight. To that end, if you are going to the game tonight, make sure to arrive early. Dennis Skulsky, BC Lions president, hinted that there is going to be a grand retraction of the roof twenty minutes before kickoff, so that spectators can see the new roof in action. It should be an awe-inspiring, historical moment for Vancouver.

The picture on page 3 of today's Province clearly shows seats without cup holders.

The seats in the picture on p.3 also have armrests that fold up, whereas the ones with cupholders appear to be fixed in place.

Perhaps it is the retractable sections of the stadium that are missing cupholders (since they need to fold up compactly)...?

*** Note: I cannot find the picture that is on page 3 on the Province website this morning, sorry.

Edit: the 360-degree picture posted earlier clearly shows seats with no cupholders and with folding armrests. Pan to the right to look at the nearest seats to the camera:
http://360.io/ATHEVH

As a counterexample, the following pic shows that the seats with cupholders clearly do not have folding armrests, so I think they are different from the ones that are shown to be missing cupholders and have folding armrests:

The seats in the photo are indeed retractable and these particular seats are in the endzones flanking the field entryways. These seats will only be used for soccer games and will not be in use tonite as was stated by B Lenarduzzi this morning. The retractable seats on the yardlines are in use tonite and do or will have cupholders. Since the seats pictured above will not be used until Sunday's soccer match there is time to install these later beginning after the game tonite.

Awesome find.

Could it be that those panoramas show pitch side LED video boards (i.e. the ones that the Whitecaps use) elevated in front of the sideline railings? If so, then combined with the massive LED video screen and the LED video ribbon circumnavigating the stadium (not to mention the LED panels of the celestory windows), there is going to be a mind-blowing phantasmagoria of LED animation and special effects.

Holy crap.

I found a better view of the armrests on the Vancouver Sun site.. see below. The lower left corner shows the seats that are on concrete have cupholders. The rest of the image shows the retractable bleachers on a steel frame, and these do not have cupholders. (And some of them will indeed be in use for the Lions.... the retractable bleachers go up something like 20+ rows in some sections.)

Anyway, I'm not bothered about it myself, but some people might get a bit different type of seat from what they expect.

My understanding is that only TSN's standard definition channel is susceptible to blackouts. The TSN HD channel will have the game locally whether it is blacked out or not.

I don't think the NFL network is available locally in HD, at least not on Shaw, and you'll need HD to do the new stadium any justice.

Not all the seats have cupholders on the front. Some seats have retractable armrests that have the cupholder mounted on a bracket behind the armrest at the back of the seat. It's a weird location since the people sitting behind you can accidentally kick your drink since the cupholder is basically in front of their feet. The holders are also not very deep so it remains to be seen how well they hold a drink.

If we are over 50,000 we are really close to a sell out.

That prospect became more of a reality when BC Place GM Howard Crosley suggested a crowd count of 52,465 would represent a full house. That’s about 2,000 seats below than what the new capacity was thought to be. The old BC Place could accommodate more than 59,000.

I find it incredible that they don't actually know how many seats are in the building! Like, actually, truely amazing that they may be as much as 2000 off. What happened to the extra 2000 seats they paid for? And this isn’t a case of dumb as TV reporter getting the facts wrong, Crosley is the facility general manager.

I don’t really mind the reduction in capacity. Personally I think 50,000 would be perfect.

I'm currently living next door and will be going to the Whitecaps game on Sunday. Will try to take a few exterior photos tonight, maybe some interior ones on the weekend too if I can get away with having my DSLR with me.

From this angle you don't notice the cable lighting as much but I now agree it's cleaner without them. It's overkill when everything is on, maybe if the roof is dark it would look more elegant i.e. Lions Gate Bridge.

Terry Fox Plaza looks a whole lot better. But I do not like that damn dirty ice cream/food truck against that brand new wall and hi-def video screen. C'mon, man.

On further inspection, it might be some kind of corporate truck. But still. That's the perfect spot for the Felions to be doing their pre-game show.

With regards to the logo, it looks much better when viewed in the context of animation like that.

The monument itself is very well done, I'm just wondering how intrusive those statues might be during outdoor screenings and things like that. There's been a lot of complaining about a recently-built monument in Halifax's Grand Parade because of obstructed views during events.

If we are over 50,000 we are really close to a sell out.

There's a reason that 52,465 is considered a full house. That's the number that it takes to pay all the bills. The other 1535 seats are gravy. That number 1535 represents the seats that typically are in a (not-so-favourable) viewing area of the bowl, ie: sightlines. These are the seats that are tucked away in corners etc.

sorry 54500 actual new seats - 52465 new seats sold = 2035 remainder of "lousy, only if I have to" seats.

I doubt the number to break even would be that high. When is the stadium ever going to sell 50,000+ tickets apart from opening night and the Grey Cup?

You raise a good point and I should have considered that. So I guess the actual break even number is much lower. That's not to say that there are that many more undesirable seats. I just mean that you are right about the break even number. The 2035 undesirable seats number should still be accurate, give or take.

The whole BC Place Wikipedia article is a mess. Defiantly needs to be cleaned up, it doesn't have the correct figures for seating.

Since this renovation is more like a complete re-build the article should be about the new BC Place with a smaller section giving info on the old dome.

The wall behind the screen in the Terry Fox plaza looks great up close.

Not complaining, but I couldn't help but wonder why they didn't put this wall up over each of the ramp walls around the stadium. Would've looked great IMO.

I'd like to know where you got that information? from my understanding, there were no plans for the video screen to be on all the walls of the stadium. but wouldn't complain if it happened!

It's a Telus marketing truck promoting Optik TV (hence, the Telus logo on the video screen). It's usually parked at Telus headquarters just up the street at Georgia and Seymour.

was down there tonight at kickoff - there was a large crowd watching the opening on the big screen - which in person is so crisp and clear and amazing

than the blackout started so most people left

i really like the plaza area, feels open and welcoming now, the lighted seating are a nice little touch

there is telus all over down there - the big screen during the game was showing a lot of telus ads and the big screens on the side were also showing telus ads...

i wish i could get inside

the people on CTV seemed pissed while some understood they need to work out the kinks

they ran out of hot dogs - apparently people waited 40 minutes to get there and find out they waited for nothing

After 10 minutes, I'd bail out of the line. 40 minutes? What a waste of a good ticket.

There were probably a lot of people who're just curious about the food and beverages offered.

As already posted the food truck was a Telus truck, there were Telus ads all over the place. The announced attendance was 50,251. The place looked great but there are some kinks to be worked out. The line ups were about 20min probably felt longer though. Not sure why about 33% of the concession stands were closed. Rules were all over the place some stands limited you to 2 beers while some only 1. :koko:
Surprised by how cold the place got once the centre opened, I wasn't dressed for it so it might not be that bad but we were all freezing.
The screens were surprising clear. The roof only took ~5min to open, was pleasantly surprised how quick it was.
I'll post some pics tomorrow, didn't take very many.

Blackout? What blackout?

they stopped showing the game on the big screen - they just ran advertising - but they had showed all the pre-show stuff and the national anthem, the coin toss and a few seconds of the game before they blacked it out or blocked it out whatever term is correct

I just got back from the game. I had a great time.
The concourses and ramps are mostly just the same old concrete, that's true.
But the interior of the stadium looks fantastic.
The video screens, including the wraparounds, are so crisp and vivid it was amazing.
The roof looks fantastic, and seeing it open was awesome, as was watching the LED window panels. One row segment at the top centre was not functioning I noticed.

The concession lineups were very bad though, with some people near me saying they waited 30 min for warm beer, or no hotdogs, etc, as described above.

The game itself was fantastic though, I have no complaints.

I attended as well. I enjoyed the event and experiencing the newly renovated stadium. I didn't notice any overt branding of the stadium except for 'BC Place' but I suppose that might change for soccer games.

The concourse areas were a bit of a mess with the lineups. When it was light out the concourses were excellent with the new glass, very bright and airy compared to before. But when it gets dark it's a very dim concourse. Somehow I was expecting it to be better lit. The traffic flow was also very chaotic due to concessions every 20m or so, each jutting out into the pedestrian traffic. Overall it is an improvement over before though, that's for sure.

The stadium interior was really nice. The large screen was amazing, almost seemed too large as you walk through the entrances from the concourse. It almost makes the stadium seem smaller because of its size, but you get used to it really quick and is really spectacular. The ribbon bands, extra lighting, the acoustics, all very nice. The turf looked really good. As the pics show, they retracted the roof and it was very fast. While they did retract the fabric, they did not move the draping into that well below... they just let it hang there. Working as intended?

The announced the official attendance was just over 50,000. I can't remember the precise number.

I think the concourses need more work, but other than that it was an A+ experience.
