Checked out Fort Worth's historic Stockyards. And had a tasty burger.

This is where I had the tasty burger. Too bad I didn't get a shot of her backside, she had an ass that wouldn't quit:

This lady was belting it out, and she was on an oxygen tank:

Looks like they really play up the stereotypes for all the tourists who flock to the stockyards. Actually looks like fun.

Amazing neighborhood. It looks like it has been renovated, yet isn't gentrified. It looks like it's still used for its stock functions, and the restaurants and other businesses look like they are meant to be for people who still live the rough, Wild West lifestyle. It's like it's a Wild West town in the middle of a modern city.

I don't think those people really live such a lifestyle. I've never met anyone in Fort Worth who does. I suspect these are staged events. It's meant to be entertaining for the tourists and photographers, and it is.

I'm sure the cattle drive was a tourist gimmick, but the neighborhood seems as authentic as you can get nowadays. It doesn't look like the kind of place that soccer moms would spend an afternoon in; it looks more like a place that a 300-pound man would go for a steak. The cowboy hat store looks real enough, on top of that.

They have a steam-engine that runs fifteen miles up to Grapevine and back. It starts in the pavillions across from the main stockyard building. Nice photos... you must have visited on a Tuesday or something.

Mmmmm....I wouldn't mind a good steak. Very hard to find at a reasonable price.

The stockyard area is a tourist mecca and brings in a lot of money; not that there's anything wrong with that. It's sort of like a theme park. Seems like OKC has a similar area. Anyone know for sure? Is Denver's an active area?

Can someone tell me if there is a similar attraction in or near Houston?

Great pictures by the way.

Wonderful shots Boris, you really captured the essences of the Fort Worth Stockyards.
looks like the real deal to me.....nice shots
I was there two weeks ago and it is the real deal, but in a historical perspective. The real rodeo events happen at the Will Rogers arena, which is much closer to downtown http://www.fwssr.com/. The stockyards do attrack the tourist, but also J.R. Ewing types. J.R., in the series Dallas, use to eat at the Cattleman steak house. I ate next door at the 3H Ranch and it was just as expensive, tasty, but no food item is worth that much. I paid for the location and the ambiance. The area also has music venue and I saw at least 15 saloons/bars. There are many biker's who frequent the area but they seem to be the suburban/weekend bikers, not Hell's Angel types. Not too much renovation was done to the structures and it is evident they are well built. This area is not large, just a few blocks, but very much worth the trip (several miles from downtown). A ton of history but mostly used as bars and restuarants now. There is a wonderful old hotel in the middle and some museum oriented stuctures around. The actual holding pens were filled with small tourist shops but some are used for the ocassional herd walk through town.

Mmmmm....I wouldn't mind a good steak. Very hard to find at a reasonable price. The stockyard area is a tourist mecca and brings in a lot of money; not that there's anything wrong with that. Denver's livestock events began in 1899, Fort Worth's in 1896, and both currently have three weeks or so of events every January. http://www.nationalwestern.com/ Denver has a large area like the Will Roger's area for these events, but Denver did not keep an area like the stock yards. Similar to Dallas and Houston, Denver grew and the stockyards moved further away from the central business core and more into rural areas. We did, however, hang on to many saloons in the Foot Hills and they are used for gaming/casions today, Central City, Black Hawk and a few others.

Looks like a great place to go for some whiskey and listen to some Hank Sr.
It is perfect for this on the weekends!

^ LOL!

The Stockyards area is a example of the difference in ideology between Dallas and Ft Worth; FW embraces and cultivates its Western heritage, Dallas seems to shed it whenever possible.

Another impressive thread of photos, Thanks!

All of the street activities are staged events. The cattle are owned by the City of Fort Worth and they are driven through the area twice daily. There are some good restaurants in the area that primarily serve steak and hamburgers. There are also several good Mexican restaurants in the area. I don't go to the Stockyards very often, and usually when I do, it is for a steak and the atmosphere.

A few of the cattle pens have been left to show what the area was like. The old photograph looks very similar to the way the are looked about 100 years ago. Swift and Armour opened up very large meatpacking plants adjacent to the cattle pens in 1902. Both have closed, with most of the Armour plant still intact and the Swift plant left mostly demolished and in ruins. However, the old Swift Office Building has been converted into office space for a local Oil and Gas exploration company.

I actually ate at the Love Shack today for lunch!!! That place is second to none!
It does not double as a historic western brothel as the name may suggest.
