View Full Version : What time does your city stop the party?

There has been a lot of lobbying in St. John's recently ro reduce the serving hours. Currently bars are "supposed" to stop serving at 3am; however, more often than not a lot of bars serve many hours past that. Those opposed to the late hours, somehow believe that all night disturbances and misheif will stop if the city rolls the serving hours back to 2am or 1am.

I think the hours are fine the way they are and are a reflection of the lifestyle here and is good for business and tourism.

What are the serving hours in your province / city and how do you feel about the time?

There has been recently talk here of allowing 24/7 service, or staggering closing times so there is not the 2-3 am bar rush, and shit show that follows it.

Currently Last Call is 2 am at the latest, and everyone is kicked out in the street by 3

That IS rediculous!!!

Terraces is what makes Montreal's nightlife so famous! It was definately my favourite part of partying there!
Hamilton is about to open it's 1st rooftop patio (terrace) at The London Tap House (www.londontaphouse.com/Hamilton)

Hamilton stops serving at 2am, bars close at 3am. But during special events, we serve til 3am bars close at 4am. I believe Toronto's the same?

The central part of the City of Gatineau (the former City of Hull) is the only place in the province of Québec where bars close at 2 am. Elsewhere in Québec, including the rest of Gatineau, they close at 3 am.

This was seen as part of the solution to serious rowdiness and crime problems on the promenade du Portage about 10 or 15 years ago. The idea being that if the bars closed at the same time as in Ottawa, fewer rabble-rousers would cross the river. (Of course, it didn’t resolve the drinking age disparity between Ontario’s relatively firm 19 and Québec’s negotiable 18…)

When the new City of Gatineau was created, it was decided that the area that was formerly Hull would retain its 2 am closing time. There were some discussions last year about changing it back to 3 am in the Hull sector, but residents have protested and the idea hasn’t really budged since.

Ottawa's last call is officially 2 am, outdoor terraces in residential areas usually pack it in at 11 pm (they can stay open longer in areas like the Byward Market). What has appeared here after Hull switched their last call to match Ontario's, is after-hours bars. You have to know where they are but some go til 10 am. Booze-free after 2, of course.

Gentrification often does that to certain areas. Families move in and decide that the noise from bars and terraces is unbearable and they tend to be vocal about it to their councilors. Chelsea in New York is being transformed because of this. The gays gentrified it enough for straight people to move in with their babies and they now complain, vocally, and the bars are being raided and fined into non existence.

In Toronto, non enclosed patios must close by 11, I believe. And because of the draconian and ridiculous liquor laws if you want the party to continue (barring going to an alcohol free dance club -where drugs are the pick me up of choice) you need to visit a boozecan or a Matador like club (places which everyone knows operate but again in the spirit of Toronto tolerance operate with minimal police interference -that is of course unless some middle class white kid ends up dying at one and then there will be an outcry and the nanny state will step in.)

There are actually very few places in North America where people want the party to last all night long. In Boston last call is still 1 a.m., California, it's 2 and even in places where it's 4 a.m. or later people are cleared out by 2.

That's rediculous! Sadly, the same thing is happening in Toronto's Gay (Church-Wellesly) Village. Some of my friends were warned about noise on a side street off of Church during Toronto Pride last year! DURING PRIDE!! If you don't want noise, move to a quieter neighbourhood!

So what's happening in Toronto is the gays are moving to a new village, Gay West Village aka Parkdale. They gentrified Church-Wellesly (and even Jarvis to Cabbagetown), so the straights have moved and are complaining about too much partying. Rediculous.

That pretty much sums up Winnipeg as well.

The LC's generally close at 11pm, and the beer vendors (cold beer stores) close at 2am.

I usually call it a night around 9pm.

Although it would take a huge leap of faith on the part of elected officials, the best solution to boorish behaviour after bar closing times would be to let them close when they want. That way, instead of having a huge inebriated throng exiting clubs at the same time, the nightlife crowd would trickle away slowly during the night as people’s energy slowly peters out.

Not everyone is good to go until 5 or 6 am, but most people can last until at least 2 am, which means the bars are usually still packed at closing time.

I never understood the wisdom of throwing thousands of young drunken adults into the streets of (usually) one single neighbourhood at exactly the same time.

I assume the bars in Winnipeg are the same - but all of the clubs and lounges close at 2:00am.

meh. When the legal bars in Montreal close up at 3am, some just move on to the afterhours clubs and illegal bars.

If Thunder Bay had parties, they would end at 2 am. :)

Bars close at 2am but the drunken stumbles downtown go until the morning. It's quite interesting to spectate from a sober point of view, and even more interesting to participate :P

the midnight thing in Vancouver only applies to bars and restaurants not on the granville strip and if it gets made into law

as it is now the hours are staggered - granville street is the latest to 3 am - but if you go to a bar like the biltmore in the east end its 2 am on weekends and i think 1 am other nights

either way the laws in BC continue to be archaic and out of sync

as for the suburbs i think its 2 am in all cities

Heard a story awhile back that Vancouver city council want all the bars in the city to shut down at midnight. I mentioned this to someone here in Edmonton, and there seems to be speculation that something like this is in the plans for Alberta as well, but nothing for sure yet.

I agree! When I was in Kelowna the BC Liquor stores were closed on a Sunday! In the middle of the summer! In a resort town!! I was pretty upset! haha

Montreal IS awesome. I remember partying at a bar called Les Deux Pierrots in Old Mtl til 4am, then walking in (yes IN) to a McDonald's just down the street and eating there. It was awesome!

I know the Palace and Dome close at 3:30am here. But the party doesn't end there. House parties go until after the sun rises around here

I think if bars were allowed to stay open all night we would avoid a lot of problems with violence on the streets after everyone leaves the bar. I thought I remember talk in AB about having the bars close at 12 (some old conservative politicial brought it up IIRC), That would make things much worse IMO.

I beleive that in Ontario you have to be given a half hour to finish your drink so it's 2AM last call means the bar can't close til 2:30. Correct me if I'm wrong.
In Vancouver if you stay out til last call they can litterally throw you out in 5 minutes.

I agree with a much later last call, i read somewhere, unfortunaty i dont remember where (maybe google) where it stated that studies had been done in san fran that showed that extending last call past 2am to 4am reduced fights, alcohol poisonings and alcohol related car accidents. I wish calgary had the balls to pull something like this off.

There must be a way to pressure politicians to concider this, even if for a trial period. Theres all this talk about making Calgary more cosmopolitan, and brigning all this art and great things like that. But what about entertainement, and night like. Those things make cities great. In Madrid nothing even starts till midnight.

Im going to petition.com and then starting a facebook group are you in Johnnyc.

I do love the way in NL you can buy beer at your local convenience store and gas station until 2 am, though.

From 11 pm till 8 or 8h30 am you cannot buy alcohol in places like supermarket and depanneur. You have to go in a nightclub or bar. But as soon as it is 8h or 8h30 in the morning, then you can buy alcohol in supermarkets.

I thought it was the same for pretty much every provinces?

Yes.

er.. so I've heard.

^no in the rest of Canada you haver to go to liquor stores to buy beer.

I love the walk-in fridges they have in most places. When my bro came to visit me a few years ago, he was shocked that you could just walk into the cooler and pick whatever you wanted. "Can we really go in there? really?"

In MB, you can buy cases of beer from the bar after getting your drunk on and take them home to continue the festivities.

Speaking of buying beer.. I don't know how people in Ottawa put up with astronomical beer prices.. I hear ads on the radio for 18 Blue for 21 bucks, Ontario only... but if you drive 10 mins across the border you can get a 24 for $20.99 at the gas station.

(Plus tax, plus deposit.)

BC gets screwed royally. Why is that?

I don't even want to know what it would cost in the Yukon or NWT or Nunavut..

vid

I think Nunavut is a dry reserve. ;)

Aww, that was kinda racist. :( I don't really mean it.

But it is expensive up north, due to the cost of shipping it so far for so few people. I know a can of pop in Nakina, Ontario is about 5$.
