View Full Version : Pittsburgh neighborhood tours: Point Breeze

Point Breeze is a wealthy residential neighborhood in Pittsburgh's East End. It's essentially a residential extension of neighboring posh (and more well-known) Shadyside and Squirrel Hill (though it does have a somewhat distinct atmosphere). Point Breeze is also adjacent to the vast wilderness of Frick Park and the much smaller Mellon Park. Lush tree canopies hover over diverse residential styles ranging from attractive middle class homes to luxurious mansions.

Point Breeze is the last known whereabouts of MIA forumer SuperstarMark and one-time home of the "eternal nomad" bloburgher.

I think I saw some Squirrel Hill in there too. Great thread.

all within the city-designated boundaries of Point Breeze... though sometimes the "true neighborhood" doesn't exacty conform to these boundaries (such as Friendship)... plus it can be hard to figure out where Point Breeze ends and Squirrel Hill starts since they're pretty similar

photos come from Reynolds, Linden, Hastings, Gettysburg, northern section of Beechwood Blvd, northern section of S. Dallas, S. Lexington, S. Homewood, and the many dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs within Point Breeze.

Thanks... I was inspired by the vivid colour of your photos... ;)

But I hope I didn't over-saturate... it's the first time I did this manually... my Photoshop mysteriously stopped working... so I installed the software that came with my Sony DSC-H2 (finally!) and used that editing software...

my laptop's screen is quite dark... (never been able to figure out how to brighten it)... so often my photos appear quite a bit brighter (sometimes too bright) on normal monitors... I'll have to view these on one of the campus computers to make sure

That was beautiful. Not sure I would have ever guessed that to be the 'burgh. Luxurious vegetation abounds.

This shot caught my eye:

http://www.pbase.com/deadwing/image/97877129.jpg

The sidewalk appears to have a hump in the middle, and the brick work to the left of the 3rd floor windows is messed up. Foundation problems?

Great tour Eg, thanks.

Dreamy post there Evergrey! Colors are vivid, but not over the top. Actually that is how they might appear with a good pair of sunshades on.With all of the flowers the subject matter almost calls for it.

Good question?

Great neighborhood Evergrey. Nicer than even I realized.
No wonder people rave about this neighborhood.

It seems however, that the area is over-run with retrievers. Someone call Terminex!!

Great tour, Everygrey! Pittsburgh's East End neighborhoods comprise one of my favorite sections of any city in the nation. I love this time of year when the lush greenery returns to Western PA. And, I'm always surprised that out of towners are so surprised at how green Pittsburgh is... what are they expecting?... it's part of Penn's Woods.

Very plush, not what I would exactly expect of Pittsburgh.

By the way...

GO HILLARY !

And GO RED WINGS !

I need to make a trip to Pittsburgh, it seems like a very interesting city, kind of like Cincinnati. I would also like to visit the Monroeville mall, the one filmed in the original Dawn of the Dead.

All that green and those impressive mansions remind me of my hometown, Brookline MA. But the vernacular screams Pittsburgh! Nice thread.

I totally agree. These streets are distinctly Pittsburgh. :)

Thanks Randy! I like that one too... I tried to convey the greater "topography" of the area.

Wonderful shots of Birmingham of the north!

Thems fightin' words! :)

As has been stated on this forum in the past, Pittsburgh had a "Birmingham" and even an "East Birmingham" long before Alabama had a "Birmingham".

Chill out! That was a reference to PA Pride's comment (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=151331&page=2) in my recent 3-part "A May Day in Birmingham" series.

Wow, cool area! Birmingham is really great. I wanna come tour it someday. Love the downtown and surrounding area. Wonderful!

^ Chill out?... seriously? Please, my comment in no way warrants a "Chill out!" from a moderator. Come on now, I even used a ridiculous word like "Thems" and included a smiley face icon... obviously I was not being very serious or confrontational.

If posting an historic fact about Pittsburgh (especially one that most non-Pittsburghers would be unaware of) is now considered a crime on this forum, then I am guilty.

Point Breeze is an incredible neighborhood. Awesome photos Evergrey! Point Brugge is also easily one of the best restaurants in the city (The Point Cafe).

LOL! You thought I was saying "chill out" as some kind of warning? By responding to dfwtiger with "Pittsburgh had a 'Birmingham' and even an 'East Birmingham' long before Alabama had a 'Birmingham'," it appeared as though you were trying to put him in his place (as if he, or anyone else, would seriously think of Pittsburgh as "The Birmingham of the North"). I was just saying to "chill out" as in "relax, there's no need to be defensive" and enlightened you as to where that comment originated. ;)
