Sausalito, CA (pop 7,330)

Most people who know the Bay Area, know Sausalito. A beautiful (and wealthy) community just north of the Golden Gate bridge.

Borrowed from my last thread:

Tiburon, CA (pop 8,666)

Another affluent community in Marin. In fact, I believe, along with neighboring Belvedere, it is probably THE wealthiest in Marin.

California has a lot of great little cities & towns, but I'd say these two look to be about the prettiest in the entire state (and maybe country). Beautiful setting combined with hills, water, greenery, flowers, and some of the best views of San Fran!

According to dataquick, for April 2008, the median house in Marin county as a whole was $800,000 which is actually down from $925,000 a year ago. And on trulia.com, there is a nice 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1350 sq ft home along the little lagoon in Tiburon offered at a reasonably affordable $1.3 million...:haha:

what a beautiful place - and such astonishing views... it's not often I think this of an American town, but I could so happily live there! Prices are reasonable compared to central London !!!

Two beds, two baths and 1350 sq. ft. for $1.3 million is actually not that bad. But then I've been looking in Manhattan.

How would one get from here to work in SF's financial district? I assume there is a ferry service (can't just be the bridge), but how long does that take? Or is there dock space available in San Francisco such that one could just motor over oneself on a powerboat, at least in the warmer months?

Part of me suspects that difficulty of commute is the reason prices remain relatively reasonable.

The ferry takes about 25 minutes:

http://www.goldengateferry.org/schedules/Sausalito.php

Dock space? The wait is years long - good luck. Plus, the places where you could park a boat would require quite a hike or ride to the Financial District - the Ferry Building is right there, but you can't dock at the Ferry Building.

The term "warmer months" doesn't really apply that much either. Once you get out onto the Bay and can feel the wind whipping through the Golden Gate - it's not that warm no matter what time of year. It's better to measure by wet (winter) and dry (rest of year) season.

For families, the commute can be worth the hassle - Marin public schools are ranked as some of the best in the nation. Private school quality for a much cheaper price.

Perhaps it is all about perspective, but, 1.3 million for a two bedroom condo certainly isn't very much for your money. I'd rather get something in SF for that money. There's a Forbes magazine link on wikipedia that lists the most expensive zip codes in the US in 2006. Tiburon-Belvedere rated 18th with a median home price of 1.68 million. But, another community in Marin, Ross, is at #5 with 2.24 million median home price. I wonder if this has changed at all.

I do think the relative isolation (as well as the topography) helps to keep growth a lot slower in Marin compared to other parts of the Bay Area. I get the impression the people there like it that way. The ferrys are relatively convenient though if you work in the city. I even know a person at my work who takes the Larkspur ferry to downtown SF and then Bart over here to downtown Oakland everyday. He likes it.

That would actually work very well if you think about it--the Embarcadero BART station is right across the street from the Ferry Building.

Don't forget that Marin has pretty much blocked any and all development except in the established towns and along the 101 corridor. Everything else is public lands, parks or subject to various conservation easements. Many of the remaining farmers in Marin have sold development rights to conservation groups, so while the happy cows may continue to roam the hills over Bolinas Lagoon, suburban homeowners never will.

Are you gonna photograph "Marin lite" (Novato)?

Right. This is for a condo in a relatively isolated suburb. You can't compare the prices with Manhattan. Compare them with Westchester or Connecticutt along the Long Island Sound.

The commute by ferry is about as pleasurable as a commute gets. It's very comfortable and very relaxing, with stunning views from one end to the other. You can walk anywhere in the FiDi from the Ferry Building. There is also Golden Gate Transit's bus service that goes from all over Marin into SF. All-in-all, the transit system from Marin to jobs in SF is very comprehensive and efficient. The easy and pleasant commute to SF is one of the many benefits of living here.

Nice pictures. The views from Sausalito are beautiful, and the houses perched on the hills are really nice. It's no wonder why people really want to live there.

Tiburon sounded familiar to me because you could get an NFL team called the Tiburon Sharks as a Madden card in many of the Madden games for PlayStation. It's nice to see what this town looks like after hearing about it in video games.

I love Sausalito! And San Fran! No trip to San Fran is complete without getting to Sausalito...we stopped there on the way down from Sonoma.

It killed me to just make a quick plane-switch in San Fran on our way back from San Diego last week without staying a night or too...the perfect day outside the window - and perfect view of DT was almost too much.

Thanks for the photos and reminder of one of the most beautiful places in NA!

Tiburon, of course, means "shark" in Spanish.

No pics of Belvedere. Couldn't you get on the island (THAT's where the hedge fund managers live)?
