-Bonkers for Yonkers-
We had a globe I used to look at as a little kid. I remember my mom pointing out that we lived under the 'O' in YONKERS.
Yonkers is a city of about 200,000 in southwestern Westchester County, bordering the NW Bronx.
This whole tour is taken from Bergen County, New Jersey. Pics were taken in September and October of 2005.

Yonkers comes from the Dutch "de Jonkers" meaning The Aristocrats

The Hudson River is not actually a river here. It is a tidal estuary, meaning it experiences tides in and out and does not flow in one direction like a river. Bad for pollution.
New York City only has one true river, the Bronx River, as the Harlem and East rivers are technically straits (two mouths, no source).

The mighty George Washington Bridge, known as 'the GWB' or simply 'the bridge' locally.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj282/fraz11nj/NJ%20Palisades/24.jpg

Finished in 1931, it is one of the busiest bridges in the world. 108 million vehicles crossed it in 2004. The total span is 1,450 feet, almost exactly as long as the Sears Tower is tall. The main span is 1,067 feet.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj282/fraz11nj/NJ%20Palisades/25.jpg

The bridge was double decked, with the lower deck opening in 1962, which increased capacity by 75%. there are 14 lanes in total. Both decks are bi-directional, with the lower being cars-only.

It's a $6* toll to get into Manhattan. Returning to New Jersey, as with all the best things in life, is free.
*I think it's $8 during peak now.

Around the 190's streets of Manhattan. The bridge is at 178th.

The New York side has steep cliffs as well
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj282/fraz11nj/NJ%20Palisades/30.jpg

For perspective, Riverside Catherdral is around 120th street, the Empire State Building is on 34th. 20 blocks to the mile...

This is a relatively new landfill park on the river. we're looking back at the NJ Palisades. The New Jersey Palisades are a 350-500 foot high wall of rock along the Hudson River across from New York. The highest and most dramatic portion of the cliffs is across from Upper Manhattan, The Bronx, and Yonkers.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj282/fraz11nj/NJ%20Palisades/32.jpg

The bridge was covered in scaffolding.
The original plan in the late 20's was to cover it in granite, like the Brooklyn Bridge, but when the depression struck, the bridge was left with it's bare steel frame.

Columbia Presbetyrian to the right. Note the Little Red Lighthouse.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj282/fraz11nj/NJ%20Palisades/34.jpg

I remember when I was a kid and heading to a birthday party, when we got on the bridge the kids in the car decided to tickle me until we got to the NY side. Not cool. There are signs halfway on the bridge that say Welcome To NY or NJ.

Climbing a trail up the Palisades. One great thing about being from around here is you get to do stuff like this that a visitor to NY would never have on thier radar. There's alot of neat stuff outside the city.

You can also see the Hell Gate Bridge. It's really cool that you can see that from New Jersey.

Up here I walked past two goodfellas in leather jackets who halted thier conversation and stared at me while I walked past. I wish I was kidding.

The section of Bergen County, NJ along the Palisades north of the bridge was bought up by John D. Rockefeller early on, and it remains very exclusive, undeveloped area with scattered mansions. The town of Alpine, NJ, with 2,000 residents is undoubtly the per-capita leader in black millionaires, with homes there owned by: Chris Rock, Denzel Washington, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Damon Dash, Patrick Ewing, Lil Kim, Puff Daddy, Gary Sheffield, Russell Simmons, Wesley Snipes, and Stevie Wonder. I love that Gary Sheffield is part of that list.

Nice views up there. I never tire of crossing the GWB and marveling in the city's grandeur. It seems that people often forget that NYC abounds with natural scenic beauty.

Excellent photothread!! It's nice to see NYC from a different angle. I have never seen Yonkers before. I didn't know if it was a suburb with residential towers, or something more. I also wasn't aware that there were bluffs along the Hudson. I guess you learn something new about NYC all the time!! Great shots!!

Wow - it looks like you might have taken this around the time when that retaining wall collapsed onto the parkway (or I could just be seeing that wrong).

Great shots all around!

Oh yeah, I love to hang out in that area of the NJ Palisades for a short urban getaway. :D

Also that retaining wall has already been fix, so I assume these are old photos.

Many NYers don't know that the GW Bridge has a pedestrian/bike walkway, which provides a great way to enjoy these views for yourself. All you have to do is take the A up to 181st st if I remember correctly, and the bridge is a short walk from there. I've done it a few times. Highly recommended.

Several years ago my wife and I were in Manhattan for a weekend. I brought bikes with us (that I managed to squeeze into my car). On a Sunday AM, I asked the parking garage attendant to allow us to take the garage's elevator down into the sub-basement to get our bikes, and we went on a day long adventure across Central Park, trough the streets of Harlem, over a hill in Morningside Park, across the Columbia campus, and finally across the GW Bridge (which terrified my wife). We found a park in NJ, just south of the bridge and sat on a bluff overlooking the bridge, river, and city. We felt like we had discovered something hardly anyone else (of the millions within a few miles of us) seemed to be aware of. These pics really take me back to that trip.

Thanks for these photos! It occurs to me just how much of a beacon and landmark the Empire State Building is. One can see it from thirty miles away in every direction (it's easily visible from the Tappan Zee, just up-river from where you were). Anyway, great shots. Oh, and I see those mafia guys often around Graham Ave. in Brooklyn. They're no joke. But I really think they need to fight their stereotypes. Seriously.
