Incredible. Do you happen to know the elevation of Stanley? I recognize the name from USA Today's weather page. They often report it as the coldest spot in the nation this time of year. With views like that I don't pity them at all.

Great job Sawtooth of the Sawtooth's! :D

Stanley's elevation is at about 6300' and is the lowest point of the valley. The Salmon River begins its trek into the canyons just to the northeast. Redfish Lake (first pic) is close to 6600' and the last lake Alturas is over 7000'. There are over 400 lakes in the area with most being at the 8000' to 10000' range.
Yes, Stanley is quite often the coldest town in the lower 48 states. The last time I checked their forecast was a little over a week ago (mid July) and I remember the low was being forecast at 29 degrees.
I would like to add a couple of pics I took the first of June of some rakers in the Salmon River Mountains, as viewed looking to the north from about 2 miles south of Stanley. Snow drifts were still on the northern slopes in town at the time these pics where taken and a solid snow cover of about 18 inches was only about 10 miles out of town heading towards Boise. As you can see the trees are just starting to shed there wintergreen color.

:previous: I have seen these peaks from Stanley and always wondered what their official names are. It seems like central Idaho has craggy peaks jutting up in all directions.
I really need to find time to get into the White Cloud Mountains and to Frog Lake and Castle Peak. I used to go there every summer while growing up.
There is just too much to see and not enough time:D

Wow, this is such a beautiful area and I am so envious.
This is one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the Rocky Mountains and Idaho is a very scenic state, so many mountains.
Thanks for sharing!

Wow!, I had the opportunity to spend some time up there a few weeks ago with family and the area is drop dead beautiful, the lakes and mountains and rivers. It is too bad I have to travel so far from Salt Lake to see such abundant natural alpine beauty. I fell in love with Redfish Lake.

:previous: Don't tell everybody:)
Idaho is one of the most beautiful states with some of the most beautiful varied terrain and mountains and lakes and rivers and wilderness, and the good thing is that it is kind of unknown which helps keep the state pristine and not abused like some other western states are.
