I guess some folks feel like they are concert experts because they have been to a couple.... but that is like saying you are could design and build a bridge because you drove over a one a couple times.
Honestly? There is no need for that from either of you...4th grade comment or below. Grow up.

I don't think this is what any of us feel. No one has claimed to be experts. We are just using other examples than the ones you have used. Ours show that there is potential for Bruce to do well based on other concerts of his caliber that have been played here before.
First of all, I appreciate your reasonable approach. The other fella has a tendency to go on the personal attack when he doesn't like what he is hearing, so thank you for this.
Second point - here are the actual sales numbers:
Country Rocks 2008 (Keith Urban)
Paid attendance: 11,853
Paul McCartney
Paid attendance: 26,504
KISS
Paid attendance: 21,420
Country Rocks 2010 (Alan Jackson)
Paid attendance: 10,009
Black Eyed Peas
Paid attendance: 8,362
So armed with these numbers, I think 60,000 is a reach.

19800 is a number for in the round which means that all the bowl seats can be sold. Most concerts are not in the round which means that one end of the arena is empty/backstage area. Not to mention comps, blocked seats, and other things you are probably looking at 15000 max. If they are lucky.

I dig his rock and roll, but man, his bluegrass s'got soul! I'd hope he would have one or two to share.
The question remains, regardless of the bickering on theoretical ticket sales here, should the city be willing to wade into the same fiscal shenanigans, a la Sir Paul, the mayor said he would be willing to preform again?

But these are one-off shows with only a handful - literally 5 at most - of international acts that can get these crowds. And I doubt the numbers would be as high if there were more than one show of this scale per year.
I read an article where the manager of the ACC in TO said that the vast majority of big music acts are limited to 20,000 - 23,000 in ticket sales no matter who it is - and they'd rather a sell-out at 23,000 than always extra seats at 30,000. Another reason that the Garrison grounds is a more appropriate place for permanent concert infrastructure rather than the Common.

Well what about big concerts, Ben, who plays Rogers Centre? “It’s rarely used-Stones, U2, Coldplay and ACDC play Rogers Centre. McCartney, Bieber, Roger Waters and Black Eyed Peas just did multiples at the ACC. Kiss played the Amphitheater and Weezer just played a small config at the Air Canada Centre, for good reaon.”

There is a reason Bruce and Sir Paul play ACC, not Rogers. Because that is how big they are.
You get Coldplay, I could see 80,000. But the Eagles did not do 80K at that site, they did 40-50K, and Bon Jovi did just over 20K.

I guess you could do the Garrison grounds at a higher price if need be to get the act..........and then we are talking about a real ampitherter...The Boss could still get 60,000 at the commons.....first and last time here plus possibly last tour......

The city and TCL released the actual sales numbers during the concert scandal, saying the contractual privacy no longer mattered because PPE was out of business. I can dig up the press release if I must, it was emailed to me too. These numbers, reported by the Coast, are from the sales audit provided by Ticket Atlantic.

The sales reports by most promoters are exaggerated, for sure. As KP says, Sir Paul was reported up at the high end of 36K and the actual sales were 10K less.
BEP was reported 21-22K and the sales report was 9K. This was in part because PPE gave away 11K complimentary tickets to make it look full.
I don't think the exaggeration is as bad for the Moncton shows. Different companies, more professional, international companies. But it would still be there a bit.

I believe Wikipedia implicitly, I am after all a Wikipedia editor. :D
Seriously though, I had nothing to do with this particular article so I think I can comment objectively. The figures for the Moncton concerts I believe are valid. In particular the Rolling Stones and U2 figures seem right. The others I'm less sure about, but I see no reason to doubt them. The Moncton concerts have always been professionally done and under the direction of the late, great Ian Fowler, I don"t think anything misleading would have been said.

This concert is actually taking place at the Metro Centre.
And don't put down the old rock! I was born after most of it was written but I still respect classic rock more than any other genre of music. Not to mention they actually had skill. Most artists today put so much technical bs into the sound of their music that behind it all their really just talentless boobs lol.

Yes, many pop artists don't have as much musical skill as some of their elders, but there is still a whole lot of good music being made today. It's a little bit harder to find, but it's still out there.

I think there are a very few new musicians that could fill the commons the way the older bands still touring can. If you take the numbers, (inflated ones or actual) they show that the older ones (Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney) do significantly better than the current acts (Black Eyed Peas). It’s too bad the actual attendance for all the concerts in Halifax was less than desired, but I guess as long as the acts keep getting their money upfront maybe they will keep coming? For a market like Halifax, the older groups just have a broader draw, plus bands like U2 and the Rolling Stones have huge production budgets that most newer groups don't have.
On another note the Tom Petty website has the St John's show on the tour (June 3), but no mention of Halifax yet, although almost all of May is free, presumably for other Canadian and Northeast States dates.

There's actually been a fair number of them that have come to Halifax recently already - Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene are two big ones that immediately come to mind (even though I ended up missing AF). I saw Beady Eye when I was in Vancouver and I'd definitely put up the cash to see them again if they played Halifax. Ditto with Hey Rosetta!, but they play Halifax quite frequently anyway. It's just that none of those are Commons-material kind of acts, which personally suits me just fine since I hate big stadium-scaled concerts. I've been to some great shows in Halifax, they've just happened to be at places like the (ex-) Paragon or the Seahorse instead of the Commons or the Metro Centre. If they absolutely want those big-scale shows I'd definitely rather see them go with the dad rock rather than whatever passes for pop music lately, but I'm not any more likely to go out and see them.
And please for the love of god, no Nickelback. I dislike Calgary enough without having the association of having grown up in their pseudo-hometown.

So far my favorite Halifax concert(s) have been both Disturbed shows. One at the Forum and one at MC. A close second would be Lagwagon at the Old Marquee.

I heard that the arcade fire concert at Alderney was very good. That is a nice outdoor venue. I was disappointed that they didn't open for U2 when I saw U2 in Montreal. I like the Cohn for a concert, and really don't like the metro centre for concerts.

Nickelback played here twice, and both were great shows and they sold out the metro center and played on the hill and everyone loved them, so say what you want but there clearly a huge band for a reason. I'm not really sure what some of you are looking for when you say we get nothing but old bands. I'm 25 myself and I grew up listening to petty. Hes timeless. Learning to fly will never get old, same with free falling. Also we have had plenty of big name newer artists play here. Goo goo dolls played the metro center and was a great show. Rob Thomas as well. I went to both shows and they were great and I can't confirm that they were sold out but both appeared to be. Arcade Fire was epic. And of course we had Metallica last year. It would be nice to have an event like snow jam that had several great bands playing and was sold out. I forget the other show that was on the hill the following year but it too was great. Lots of great artists. Maybe not one big name but lots of talent. Personally I've seen Collective Soul play here 4 times. They definitely aren't as big as they were in the 90's but there still just as good, just not the kind of music they play on the damn radio anymore. They played at the palace actually and it was crazy how many people they fit in there. Also they played 2 sold out shows at the casino and played at the Cunard center. I've been to a ton of concerts. Driven up to Toronto for some. I have to say collective soul is the best band I've ever seen live hands down. Anyway gettin off topic a little bit, sorry. I tend to ramble uncontrollably lol.

Alderney Landing is my favourite big venue.
It can hold a lot, 8000 capacity, which is great, and has the perfect balance between facilities (stage, power, some bathrooms, greenroom) and outdoors (they cut you in on concessions).
The best show I ever did was Wilco there, perfect day, sun setting, band happy, crowd happy. Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, NoFX are all bands I have enjoyed there, and it is also a great site for Summer Rush, where Rihanna and all that kind of urban music have played.
Here is the thing about concert routing - for a lot of bands smaller than the huge outdoor festival type bands, they need dates to be 8 hours apart. When you have a bunch of buses and trucks driving from date to date, and you are "small" enough to not have more than one stage setup, your drivers drive the legal limit (it is their job, they cannot risk losing their license, insurance).
So you have to have to route the tour so that you can finish striking the stage somewhere between midnight and 1 and have it all in the trucks and rolling to the next venue for an 8-10am load in. There are always variations, but eight hours is normal, 10 is stretching it, 12 is difficult.
So, the problem with concerts coming here on routed dates, well, it isn't us. It is New Brunswick. Between here and Quebec city there are not a lot of places to play, for a certain sized band, and you have to remember, they drive here and then often drive back out past Moncton.
Sure a band can route to have the off day on the in or the out leg of the tour, but it is really hard. When we did Wilco they played the Playhouse in Fredericton. They really really wanted to play Halifax, so they played a slightly less than 700 seat theatre, the smallest venue they had played (by half or more) in a decade to make the routing work.
Most bands won't do that, because they get paid correspondingly less, obviously, and why go somewhere where you can't make bank?
And the price for a promoter to book a band that is not routed, to play a "one off," is usually significantly higher.

I think if Halifax wants to get it's music scene back to the early flames of success it experienced, it needs to avoid those big bombastic mix-match of 50k concerts right now.
The Arcade Fire show was awesome, and an example of the scale that we should be putting our efforts into. Instead of convincing the big shows to come here, we should be making ourselves a place to put on their tour list. 10X 7-8 thousand successful shows through the year, is better publicity than 1 somewhat successful 40-50k show.
Even getting some acts from the tours that pass through Montreal, like the Heavy MTL fest has some well known names, and a lot of local acts to bulwark it. Even getting two of those bands to land here with the largely unrecognized local metal scene adding it's
weight would be a good example. Some of you might look upon that particular scene as of a delinquent movement, it is merely an example. I'm sure the Vaudeville scene has it's own hits.
IMHO, however I put my pants on, one leg at a time.

Just some speculation...
There have been rumours flying for the past few days about a Coldplay concert at Magnetic Hill. There is a large gap in their tour schedule, so it got me thinking about the possibility of a concert in Halifax as well. To me, Coldplay would be perfect for Citadel Hill. I believe the venue capacity is about 30 000 people, which seems about right for a band the size of Coldplay. However, I wonder if there is enough of a population base to support two concerts in the area. I feel confident that Halifax could attract a good crowd (same for Moncton) on their own, but having two shows might split the attendance.

I think the population of the Maritimes can only support one play for them, and usually shows like that have a radius clause that would preclude them playing 2 hours away.

60,000?
Last two shows (several years apart) that Bruce did in Toronto were at ACC, so 18,000 in Toronto, one night.
I don't think this would sell more than 25,000 in this market (please read that as "would be lucky to sell). Bruce is big, but he is exactly around the same size as Sir Paul, who only did 24,000.
Is this full band or troubadour acoustic?
Anyway, if flat is the worry, this would easily fit on the Hill.
Only a rumour but it shows how silly the above highlighted comment is! Maybe this is why Halifax loses out on so many events and we have no stadium.
Springsteen set to rock Moncton this summer: Report

The Boss looks set to be rocking it out in Moncton this summer.
According to the music website Atlantic Canada Rocks, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have been signed to headline the 2012 Magnetic Hill Festival on Aug. 26.
Atlantic Canada Rock reports the official announcement should be coming down soon from the City of Moncton.
“Springsteen would be another great concert for the Maritimes,” said J.C. Douglas, program director at the classic-rock station Q104, about the rumoured show. “Slowly but surely all of rock’s royalties are coming, although I’d like to see a few more come to Halifax.”
If a go, it would be another major score for Moncton. Springsteen could be as large as last year’s U2 concert at Magnetic Hill, which drew a crowd of about 75,000.
Other top acts to hit Moncton in recent years include AC/DC and The Rolling Stones.
“Springsteen fans are incredibly loyal,” said Douglas. “People will come from hours and miles around to see him.”
The 62-year-old rocker is lined up to tour select Canadian cities in late August for his latest release, Wrecking Ball — Springsteen’s first record following the death of longtime E Street saxophonist Clarence Clemons.
“It’s totally worth going where you need to go and spending what you need to spend,” said Douglas.
“No one plays a show like the Boss.”

A weekend festival is not a good idea for this site. I can't imagine the agony of trying to get in and out of Magnetic Hill two days in a row. The site would be O.K. for 25,000 but above that it is a logistical nightmare. Springsteen would be better off playing the Hfx. Commons.

Very interesting. The Federal Government allocated $3.5 million dollars to Georges Island back in January 2010. Here is a thread with news details http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=178117. They were planning to have it open to the public in 2012. I wonder if sewer and washrooms were installed? (It is hard to imagine how it could be done without being noticed though ...)

I would imagine they'd have to be if they're anticipating up to 2 thousand people on the island, but true I don't ever recall seeing any kind of construction work or anything occurring.

You obviously know nothing about the entertainment industry. I will let you thumb through this 2012 schedule and respond before I rip you to shreds. I last saw the Boss at Giants stadium in 2009 to a 92,000 sellout for three nights and before you get your knickers in a twist ....I know it was New Jersey but a 60,000 concert here would be 30,000 Americans.

Yep, I am so ignorant, and clueless. Me and Donald Tarlton:
Promoter drops Bruce Springsteen ticket sales goal
Donald Tarlton says 25,000 to 30,000 fans are expected in Moncton
CBC News Posted: Aug 17, 2012 12:13 PM AT Last Updated: Aug 17, 2012
The promoter for the upcoming Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert is lowering expectations for the size of crowd predicted in Moncton on Aug. 26.
When the Bruce Springsteen concert was announced in April, the city estimated the outdoor concert could draw 70,000 to Magnetic Hill.
Donald Tarlton said in an interview on Friday that ticket sales would be closer to 25,000 to 30,000.
“We are not going to do the record-breaking numbers that we did for U2,” Tarlton said.

The Boss played to an ecstatic crowd of over 30,000 at Magnetic Hill. The other 30,000 that were on the fence of whether to go or not opted not to go due to lack of knowledge of the Boss and the E-Street Band and negative publicity by Waye Mason types. As a result the 30,000 that didn't go missed one of the best shows on earth and the "greatest rock and roll band on the planet" ....nice going!

Rush sold out at the Metro Centre in about an hour after tickets went on sale on Saturday morning. Did anyone else here get tickets?- Wishblade I'm lookin' in your direction :P
I've heard rumors of a potential second show, given how much time there is between scheduled shows before/after Halifax on the tour already, 6 days on either side... who knows!

The group will now perform July 12 and July 14. Tickets for Rush’s second show go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. Tickets range in price from $69.50 to $124.50.
