Over the weekend we went to see Batman at the Vista Theatre in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz which is connected to the Red Line Subway at Sunset and Vermont.

First though, I got off at the Sunset and Western station in East Hollywood and took a couple of pictues:

Sunset and Vermont station which is my favorite:

Like the Silver Lake neighborhood directly to the east, Los Feliz is inhabited by the creative class. Its residents generally work in the entertainment industry and the contemporary arts and music scene. I hung out in the slums of the hood (south of Los Feliz Blvd). North of the Blvd. is the houses in the Santa Monica Mountain Range and Griffith Park... didn't go there though. Enjoy :

Looks like an interestingly eclectic neighborhood. I particularly like the two shots looking down the same hilly street. Lots of greenery present! :)

This area has always had an eclectic feel to it from as far back as I can remember. My mom used to work over at ABC Studios back in the ealry 70's. Also my older brother and sister went to school in the area.

I also remember catching the bus from south central LA with my older sister, and some of our friends down Vermont late at night to pick up my mom. This was during the famous killings of the Hillside Strangler. I remember walking down Prospect from Vermont to the ABC Studios lot. We were scared to death walking down this dark street. If anyone knows this street, they know it was full of mature trees and lots of bushes so it was quite dark, and the sound of a squirl in the night was a bit creepy.

Yet one would never know walking down this residental street there was this huge studio at the end of this block where they filmed big sitcom hits such as Welcome Back Kotter, All My Children, etc, etc. Plus this was also where the number one local news was done.

So back then the neighborhood was sort of off the radar of LA great hoods, but now that it is the area has become rather expensive.

Anyway thanks for the cool photos, but did you forgot a photo of the House of Pies. You can't go to this neighborhood without geting a picture of this long time establishment.

My partner and I are thinking of moving to LA if he gets into UCLA Medical. I REALLY want to move to Los Feliz or the Hollywood Hills East. He wants to move to someplace like Brentwood, Holby Hills, or Century City for his commute (blah).

Give me some 1920s architecture!

Thanks for all the comments I really appreciate it.

ChrisLA: Damn, nope we didn't make it to the House of Pies on this particular trip.

Shasta: A good compromise would be to live in the Hollywood Hills near Laurel or Cold Water Canyon farther to the west... good luck!

Wisla Krakow: Yes it was Saturday, which was a dry day with an offshore flow... Friday was perfect, not smoggy as some people confuse, but rather hazy with a moist onshore flow called the marine layer.

I think you mean Hollywood/Western. There is no Sunset/Western station.

Excellent tour. I love the homes in Los Feliz.

LA has so many cool nooks and crannies.

I think LA is misunderstood because visitors just have no idea how to find the "real" LA. It's not easy. I need to hang with a local next time I'm there.

You're right, I don't know what I was thinking. Too bad I can't change the title of the thread.

Thanks to all who've commented.

But when people discover the 'real LA,' they are totally and completely blown away at how amazing this city is. LA is the mecca of creativity and expression. Totally love this city.

And awesome thread.
