It's nice when you can take most of the earnings from your country men and print more money to construct these projects without environmental impact statements and little-to-no opposition.

That's why it will never happen in the US or almost any other country, for that matter.

Five hundred meters Aperture Spherical Telescope(FAST)

Total Investment: 627 Million Yuan
Project Duration: 2008 - 2013

http://cbsf.ihep.ac.cn/FAST/USA-ARECIBO.jpg

FAST建成后还将作为SKA(1993年由包括中国在内的10国射电天文学家联合倡议、筹划建造接收面积为1平方公里的巨型射电望远镜,耗资约10亿美元)的先导单元,争取说服国际天文界最终将SKA定位于中国。

OMFG WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing and keep updating things!

I see projects like this as what could pull China closer to 'the developed' world in terms of first-class facilities and infrastructure. I hope these projects are being built with some environmental concern in terms of making things better than they have been (its my sincerest wishes and hope that China starts to become more clean and modern, as its an amazing place I have to see spoiled by industry). I realize China is in a Industrial Revolution just like the US, Europe, etc. went through, and projects like these signal the end of that era and the beginning of a new and better one.

I hate to see china destroying so many of its beautiful and historic areas. I used to live in Beijing and seeing them destroy all of their history is just saddening, it really is. Not just them destroying their history but some of their most amazing scenic areas. I hope they change their ways and stop destroying stuff to just make a quick buck and stop trying to prove that they are not a 3rd world country by industrializing too quick.

I hope projects like these are the first steps. Every nation (Japan, USA, Canada, UK, France, etc.) had a transition from 'screw nature!' to where things are now, and I hope that happens soon in China.

Very cool post, amazing projects.

The State Grid Corp of China, China's leading grid operator, aims to at least triple its ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission lines by 2012, a company official said on Feb 26, according to Alibaba website.

The company plan to have 17,600 kilometres of UHV lines by 2012, Lu Jian, head of Development and Strategic Planning Department with the grid, told the 2nd Annual Power Transmission and Distribution Summit in Beijing.

The company started operating China's first UHV line in January that spans 640 kilometres from northern Shanxi province to central Hubei province and has planned to invest about 100 billion yuan ($14.6 billion) in the next three or four years for UHV lines.

Later on Feb 27, officer announced that the first UHV lines between southeast of Shanxi and Jinzhou of Hubei province, has began operate.

It has started building two UHV direct current lines, linking hydropower-rich Sichuan in southwestern China to energy-hungry Jiangsu and Shanghai in the east, with each extending more than 2,000 kilometres and expected to cost 40 billion yuan in total, according to Reuters.

UHV lines allow for heavy flows of electricity with significantly lower loss during transmission, suitable for countries with vast land masses but uneven energy resource distribution.

China's port construction, steel and power giants will pour 192.9 billion yuan ($28 billion) for infrastructure construction in Caofeidian, an island-turned development zone in the Bohai Bay in north China, according to the city government of Tangshan, which administrates the zone Xinhua's source with the government said on Wednesday that 65 billion yuan of the investment will be used for 105 infrastructure projects this year.

The 50-sq km development zone in Hebei province is 220 km to the east of Beijing. It has been designated as a model of China's environment-friendly industrial base. The projects under construction this year will equip the zone with 200 million tons of port handling capacity and an initial industrial production condition for key companies, such as the Beijing Capital Iron and Steel Group's steel plant, which moved from the capital city's urban area to Caofeidian in 2007.

The Caofeidian industrial zone was put on China's list of pilot areas for recyclable economy in October 2005. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao both paid visits to the zone. They expect it to become a demonstration area for scientific development and recyclable development.
Caofeidian has been mapped to become the country's largest steel production base by 2010. An evaluation by the country's environmental watchdog shows the steel plant will ensure 99.5 percent of solid waste and 97.5 percent of waste water are recycled. State-owned giants like PetroChina and Huadian Power Group have also made the zone their energy base.

Caofeidian, once a small sand spit in the Bohai Bay, has extended into a land of more than 50 square km through sea fillings since 2003. The frame of a modern city is beginning to take shape here as crowds of elite technicians and industrial workers swarm to the zone.

Jinping Hydropower Station’s construct project of four diversion tunnels, has started during Chinese lunar new year in Jan, according to an insider from China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, and it is expected to begin to run its first generation unit by 2013.

Located on the Jinping Dam on the mainstream of the Yalong River, Sichuan province, Jinping Hydropower Station is a power base for west-east electricity transmission project.

With a total investment of 29.8 billion yuan ($4.36 billion), the station will have a total installed power generation capacity of 4,800 megawatts and will become the largest hydropower station on the Yalong River, according to Trading Market.

The new hydropower station is expected to fully start operation in 2015, partly easing the power shortage in Sichuan Province. Besides, it is to supply electricity to consumers in Chongqing City and East China, and that would help Sichuan Province to profit from its rich water resource.

Pearl River Delta to embrace highly convenient transportation network

2009-01-08

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The country pledges to build a highly convenient and efficient transportation network in the Pearl River Delta by expanding capacities of roads, railways, ports and airports over the next 12 years, the country's top economic planner said Thursday.

The resolution was made in a 2008-2020 national plan on the development of the Pearl River Delta released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) at a news conference Thursday.

The plan sets the goal of turning the delta into the most efficient and safest passenger and cargo transport center in the Asia-Pacific region.

The move will help bolster exchange among the country's booming southern regions including the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Vice Minister in charge of NDRC Du Ying said construction on a bridge linking Hong Kong, Macao and the Pearl River Delta would be expected to start in 2009 and the central government would offer 5billion yuan (730 million U.S. dollars) for the construction of its main structure.

The main structure of the bridge stretches 29 km, the longest in the world. It will connect Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai of southern Guangdong Province.

According to the plan, operational highways in the region are set to reach 3,000 km by 2012, up from the 1,900 km by the end of 2006. Rails are expected to hit 1,100 km by 2012 and 2,200 km by 2020, compared with 287 km by the end of 2006.

Cargo throughput for ports aims to ship 900 million tonnes by 2012 and is expected to climb to 1.4 billion by 2020, up from 630 million tonnes in 2006.

Airports will handle 80 million passengers as of 2012 and 150 million by 2020. The figure stood at 45.36 million in 2006.

The construction would be carried out on an energy-efficient and environment-friendly basis by using renewable energy and clean technology, according to the development plan.

As of 2020, energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the region will be reduced to 0.57 tonnes of standard coal equivalent and 80 percent of industrial water can be reused.
