Here's a few pictures I took this past weekend in Boston's South End. A neighborhood just east of the Fenway and south of Back Bay, the South End is known for a huge collection of brick row houses, a healthy gay population, and is home to many "up and coming" restaurants. The area has rapidly gentrified over the last couple decades.

Love those homes, huh? Decent photo tour. Glad to see Boston as one of the cities that is continually represented on here. When I move there in October, I'll definitely get a big thread together.

Nice tour of my neighborhood.
The South End is pretty much fully gentirified now. The gays have been replaced by Empty Nesters and young power couples. Baby strollers are EVERYWHERE and you'll even see nannies. It's amazing how fast it all happened.
Gone are several gay businesses like the legit bookstore, the not-so legit bookstore, Mike's Movies and the porn basement, Jimmy Jane's shop, Tim's, Waltham Tavern, Purple Cactus (lesbian-owned burrito joint), Everday Cafe and more. They've been replaced by The Hingham Savings Bank, Starbucks, CVS, 7-11, trendy female shops like Looc and restaurants like Barbara Lynch's power corner (B+G Oysters, The Butcher Shop, Plum, and Stir) and Banq... yeah, with a friggin' Q!
I miss the funk. The new hood has me in one...

I prefer funk to yuppie blandness any day. Still, someone has to keep the buildings in good repair, so gentrification isn't all bad.
I used to think gays were the second-wave of urban pioneers. The first were often artists/bohemians/hippies. They would sometimes come into the worst areas as squatters and leave once the more upwardly mobile gay population came in.
There are, of course, only so many cities where this can be done, and the process is largely over. Now, the artists are finding woebegone suburbs and settling there. There's only so much fairy dust you can sprinkle on American cities, so the magic is self-limiting. Even second-tier cities like Spokane, Washington are soliciting gays and artists to make something of their downtown. It's got a great building stock but is otherwise too far removed from the rest of the "creative class". In those terms, it doesn't get any better than Boston, but where are the artists and gays?

I stayed in the South End last month and I got the feeling it was "once" gay.
There were a few gay establishments but I kept getting the feeling that its gayification was passé. Where did they all go? Cambridge?
This is awesome, looks like Brooklyn if it were real nice.

We need more Boston neighborhood photo threads. How about Brookline, Dorchester, Roxbury?
I always thought of the South End as the funky Back Bay. Mass Ave. and Columbus Ave look just like they were when I left...GREAT.

^^ A few years ago, a guy on this forum posted a ton of really in depth neighborhood tours mostly from Brookline and Roxbury. I hope he doesn't mind me linking to them: check it (http://www.pbase.com/lmjcobalt/root)
As a Brookline native out here in California, I too wish we had more neighborhood tours on this site. But then again it's typically "Boston" not to want to show off or draw attention to oneself, so I'm not surprised.
