Vancouver’s Mayor To Carry Torch At Beijing Paralympics

Although he won't be Mayor when the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games take place in Vancouver, Mayor Sam Sullivan will be among 10 Canadians participating in the torch relay at next month's Paralympic Games in Beijing. Canadian Press reports the Mayor left for Beijing Tuesday.

Sullivan uses a wheelchair after being injured in a skiing accident when he was 19.

The Mayor will reportedly be carrying the torch on his power wheelchair in a special holder he first used to hold the Olympic flag he received at the Turin 2006 Winter Games during a handoff ceremony to the Vancouver 2010 Games.

Mayor Sullivan donates 30-lb. chocolate egg to Variety


Mayor Sam Sullivan today presented the 30-lb. chocolate egg he received at the Paralympic Games in Torino to Variety the Children's Charity at a special event at City Hall.

The Mayor presented the egg to three Variety kids, with Variety Executive Director Jon Stettner, Purdy's Chocolates President Karen Flavelle and chocolatier Rick Glab in attendance.

"Variety does remarkable things for children, so I thought it would be wonderful to use this gift to raise funds for special kids," said Mayor Sullivan. "I'm sure the Italian Paralympic Committee will be delighted to know that over the next four years in the lead up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this egg will continue to bring joy to children and families in need."

Variety plans to display the egg for a two week period starting Tuesday, April 11 at Purdy's head office at 2777 Kingsway. Visitors will be able to make a donation to Variety the Children's Charity and receive a chocolate bunny lollipop donated by Purdy's.

"We are so pleased that the Mayor chose Variety as the recipient of the egg, and that Purdy's has been so generous to not only give us a place to display the egg but to also provide a donation of product," said Jon Stettner, Executive Director of Variety.

The large hollow chocolate egg was given to Mayor Sullivan by the Italian Paralympic Committee during the Mayor's trip to Torino in March. On his return flight through Frankfurt, a flight attendant accidentally dropped the egg when taking it out of a storage compartment, causing it to crack open.

Upon arriving home in Vancouver, Mayor Sullivan asked Purdy's to repair the egg and the company donated its services to restore the egg to its original condition.
