1967 - Montreal, Quebec, Canada - Expo 67, (Universal and International Exhibition of 1967) the most successful Fair ever, drawing more than 50 million visitors.

Some interesting pictures about Expo 67! All pictures are taken before 1967!

Before construction began, Ile Sainte-Helene was only half its final size and Ile Notre-Dame was mud-flats.

Both St. Lawrence River islands were enlarged with 6,825,000 tons of rock and earth fill dredged from the river and transported from Montreal's subway tunnel construction site.

^^^I love the pictures. Thanks for posting them Nicko999.
I always find anything to do with World's Fairs exciting and romantic....
mostly because they're so ephemeral.

Anyone other pics of Expo 67?

Wow awesome set!
I'm so fascinated with Expo b/c there is SO little left on the Island, which is the best place to rollerblade in the City.

What's this stadium on the bottom left of this pic?

It was called the Autostad for short.
Here is some more info about the site:

Toxic underground
PCBs found beneath Montreal's Techoparc, but it's hard to prove who put them there
Anne Sutherland, Montreal Gazette
Published: Wednesday, June 25

MONTREAL - There are dangerous chemicals buried in the ground of the Technoparc. The problem with laying blame is proving who put the chemicals there.

No matter who did it, the chemicals continue to leach into the St. Lawrence River, creating unhealthy conditions for humans and aquatic life.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been found in dangerously high levels in soil and water samples.

Environmental groups have long considered the dangers of this toxic dump located right next to the waterway. The Waterkeeper Alliance, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and Société pour Vaincre la Pollution all made submissions to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation complaining about the toxic discharge into the St. Lawrence river.

Environment Canada looked into the matter and did a thorough study between 2002 and 2003 . The investigation ended when Environment Canada couldn't establish, with proof, the persons responsible for the deposits or which sites are the source of the deposits.

The results of that study were released this week.

The city of Montreal has a plan asking for solutions for the capture and treatment of dangerous underground water once and for all.

"We've been proactive on this, we didn't wait for the report to come out," said Alan DeSousa, Montreal executive committee member in charge of the sustainable development and the environment.

Once the city finds the technology to remove the toxic water and oil, it intends to ask for financial aid from the federal and provincial governments that ceded the land to the city in the late '80s.

The bill could be as high as $70 million, DeSousa said.

"The city has given le Centre d'excellence de Montreal en réhabilitation de site the mandate to test any solutions to the problem and we hope for a recommendation by February 2009," DeSousa said.

"This land was a gift from those two governments and it was not a gift at all. There seems to have been a lack of due diligence in accepting this land at that time, providing the city waive recourse for future financial obligations."

What was once a marshland served as an industrial dump for 100 years. The area between the Champlain and Victoria bridges sits on top garbage 13 metres deep.

From 1866 until 1966 the site was used for landfill, backfill and any other type of dumping. Railway lines crisscrossed the area contributing to the high concentrations of diesel oil in the soil.

In 1967, the area was a paved parking lot for Expo 67. It was the home of the Autostad and a short take-off and landing airport experiment in 1974.

A film studio and several tech companies now have offices on the Technoparc site.

Austostade area is a major environmental issue here, maybe the biggest problem with the Old ''carrière Miron''..

This is the result of 200 years of industrialization without any protection rules.

It is a major problem in most of the mid and large size north-east american cities.

I was at the 67 Expo the summer of 1972...(most of it was still operating then). I saw and used the first computer that typed words on a crt screen there....(not sure if that device was there in 1967 though....)

Those pics are great! My Dad has some he took when he was there in 67, but they're old, and no where near as good as these. I've always loved Montreal, it's history of the World Fair and the Olympics, on it's way to becoming a world class city, is a very romantic story...:)
