Day two was a little less walking, my plan was to see the DeYoung Museum and get a glimpse of the Science Center, but designed by my two favorite architecture firms. Walked back towards downtown, then later went and caught a Giants/Cubs game.
Actually I should do a map of all the parts of San Francisco I covered.
Such an impressive structure. We really should respect the very few Nervi buildings we have in the US. (I will come back to this building on day three)
http://static.zooomr.com/images/5472769_007e5bf8d0_b.jpg
Do I really need to mention what this is?

http://static.zooomr.com/images/5694424_2388e1e478_b.jpg
Photos don't do this building justice. There is so much going on with materials and details, that you really need to walk around the building to take it all in. I wish I could of wandered around in it, but seeing it is a Federal Building, I am guessing I wouldnt of gotten far and the hassle would of been a pain in the ass.
http://static.zooomr.com/images/5694420_178fd5d289_b.jpg
Walking through Golden Gate Park, I looked to my right to see this. I laughed and started walking again, then stopped and said I have to take a picture of this or no one will believe me.

And one of the pieces of architecture I had to see while I was there. Herzog de Meuron is one of my top favorite architecture firms in the world, so yeah I got a little misty eyed while being in this building's presence, plus having my other favorite architect, Renzo Piano, right behind me added to my excitement. Any city should be honored to have their work in their city and San Francisco is lucky enough to have them together as neighbors.

Well, it looks like it is my bedtime, so I am gonna have to continue this after work tomorrow. I hope you guys are enjoying an amazing trip I got to have this summer and if you havent been to San Francisco yet, I suggest doing it and bringing good walking shoes.

No pictures of Piano's Academy of Sciences? I'm going back to AZ in October but I have to see the Academy first when it opens in September.
Enjoyed the other pics.

That is my goal. But tonight, I need to get to bed cause I have to get up early tomorrow and this is as far as I was able to get. Hope you all are enjoying it so far cause I know I had a blast walking all over that city.

So can somebody more familiar than I am with the old Academy explain something to me? It looks like to the left of the main entrance, they have applied a section of the OLD classic facade to the new walls whereas to the right it's bare concrete. Can this be? I noticed this several months ago when I was up in the DeYoung tower. I thought "Piano is having some fun with this." Am I missing something?

I would of taken more pictures, but Joey keep trying to sell me drugs and kept going on about how the Olsens' ruined him. Also forgot to take a picture of the halfway house Kimmy lived in on the next block over, but I did walk by it. It explains why DJ never really went to Kimmy's house.

The Federal Building designed by Mayne. It looks amazing close up...but sadly this is where my batteries in my camera died and I learned my spare batteries were the ones inside my camera. So after resting for a bit and admiring the architecture, I moved on to hunt for more batteries.

Later that night I went and watched the Cubs play against the Giants. The Cubs managed to lose this game, but I have found it funny that for two years in a row I have managed to be in a city that the Cubs were playing in, so it seemed right to go watch them play again in SF.

Yeah, it is made of copper, the idea being that it'll oxidize and end up blending in with the surrounding trees. That'll look cool...I wonder how long it'll take to thoroughly change color though.

answer to your question, about 5 years you will start to notice the color changing, 25-30 years for a complete transformation.

Hey--notice the grey building with the green windows right over the second Victorian from the left? That's my place.
Anyway, as for the copper--I worry about that copper. Copper thievery is rampant. But the architect said the idea was it would turn green and blend in with the greenery of the park. Hope it doesn't take 25 years--it already looks a lot different to me than when the place first opened.
"It was no Wrigley, but it was a nice stadium" :gaah: I love that stadium and I don't even like baseball much. You can't see no stinking sailboats from Wrigley.
Finally, before you trash the Liebeskind's CJMSF, check it out inside. Seriously.

actually i have seen alot of photos from inside as well as the plans, I wasnt impressed after reading them.
I didnt say anything was wrong with the giants stadium, it was a great stadium and definitely worth the visit, just Wrigley is in a league in itself.
As for the copper, you will really start to notice it when it is 5 years old. By 10 years it will be mostly green with a hint of copper. The 25 yr marker is the time it takes to end up like the Statue of Liberty.

The slow patina effect is one of the really cool features of that building. I look forward to watching it change over time.
I almost never like it when they graft a modern annex onto an old building, but I like the Jewish Museum. Somehow it works for me. Maybe it's because the building is situated in a way with its neighbors where you are focused on either the old part or the blue cube, but not really the two together.

I really love the deyoung - Thank god there were some people woth the money and wherewithall to get the thing built. If it had been left to SF at large, we wouldnt have it at all.
Like any (large) project in SF, there was years of lawsuits attempting to derail the project.
I dont think ill forget the bus stop posters with a bunch of kids faces saying "stop the deyoung!"
