What a sweet town Portland is. I fell in love with it. I took these while spending Labor Day weekend there. These pictures don't do the city justice. Most of them concern the touristy Old Port area (a walker's paradise). But it's the neighborhoods where this city gets really interesting. Unfortunately, the pics from there aren't as numerous as I was driving and it was harder to stop and I was feeling a bit lazy. The attitude in this place made me feel like an uberhyper New Yorker. But I settled in to the mood quickly. This city is highly recommended for a visit by architecture buffs! Rough and tumble New England!

Wow! Indeed! Portland, Maine at it's best. Such quantity and quality of images. I had never seen Portland like this before, the city contains beautiful architecture too. A nice mix of single family detached homes, to red-brown brick apartments or row homes. Grand Slam tour with this one!

Now I'm a bit homesick, especially since I've lived in two of those apartment buildings featured in your tour! :(

That said, you did a fantastic job of capturing a city and area that I love very much and have been fortunate enough to call home for the past few years. Glad to be heading back in the not too distant future.

If you have any more shots, please post them!

Wow! Portland has a lot of character and charm, has a very olde world, European feel to it, with the brick buildings, narrow streets, people-dense downtown, love it!! It's the epitome of New England style and class. This is how a city should look and feel, no matter how big or small. It seems that Portland is very liveable, unlike some of the sprawling downtowns with glitzy buildings and empty streets that some cities (you know what they are) have. I've never been there, now I want to visit! Thanks for the great pictures.

WOW! Awesome. Im a New Englander and Im having trouble thinking of any city of that size in New England that is that vibrant and beautiful. I can think of many small beach towns with quaint downtowns and the major cities but when it comes to cities of Portland's size I feel that Portland is about 10 steps ahead of its peers!!

Nice photos.

Portland is interesting to me because, in addition to simply looking attractive and historic, it shares some similarities some places in the Maritimes. It is also notably different in a few ways.. certain buildings are more or less exactly the same as what you might find in Saint John or Halifax while others are totally different. In general the residential architecture seems more similar while the commercial buildings are quite different.

Overall, it is pretty close to being a twin of Saint John, although it looks like it is in somewhat better shape these days, probably because of its proximity to Boston.

I love Portland, I love Booth Bay, I guess I just love Maine in general. I have cousins in Damariscotta, about an hour and a half north of Portland, one peninsula north of Booth Bay. My family would vacation in Round Pond and Bristol for two weeks every August for the first 18 years of my life.

Someone mentioned Portland's restaurant scene; I know one should always take Board of Tourism stats with a grain of salt, but I've read in numerous publications that Portland has the highest number of restaurants per capita in the country (if a stat like that is even possible to measure...), and the quality of these restaurants is amazing.

Bostonians are lucky to have Maine and New Hampshire so close by.
