View Full Version : Yonkers, New York

The city of Yonkers is located in Westchester County, just north from the New York City borough of The Bronx. These Photos were taken on Labor Day September 1, 2008. I found the city to be very much like its Southern neighbor, The Bronx. These photographs are of neighborhoods in the Southwest and Northwest portions of the city. The entire city is 20 square miles in area (including water).

From Wikipedia:

Yonkers is the fourth largest city in the U.S. State of New York (it falls behind New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester), and the largest city in Westchester County, with a population of 196,086 (according to the 2000 census). More recent estimates put the population at 197,234 in 2002, 197,126 in 2004 and 196,425 in 2005. Yonkers borders the New York City borough of The Bronx and is 2 miles (3 km) north of Manhattan at the cities' two respective closest points.

I felt guilty about not visiting Yonkers on my recent tour of the Hudson. So glad to see this thread on the city. Looks so urban (not really a surprise), and what great views across the river. I bet there's plenty of action at Dicks service station (lol). Thanks for the pics NYC4Life.

This must be Hudson Valley Week on SSP. Despite having lived just south of Yonkers for the past 30 years, I know virtually nothing about it other than the fact that its riverfront is undergoing a bit of a development boom. Thanks for posting! That's the same Riverdale Avenue that goes through the Bronx I assume?

Excellent tour and it's great that Yonkers also gets coverage on this fora. Nice to show the peripheral N.Y.C. area, it's satellite cities and towns.

Yes it is. Riverdale Avenue terminates in Yonkers at the intersection with Main Street, then it continues as Warburton Avenue. Broadway also continues into Yonkers as South Broadway and North Broadway further north into the city. Broadway terminates just north from the village of Sleepy Hollow.

Wow, thanks so much!! I have always wanted to see pictures of this city, and how people live outside of Manhattan island. Very nice tour....

If this is Hudson Valley Week, keep 'em comin'!!!!

I'm familiar with the Glenwood neighborhood in the north end, but the only other parts of Yonkers I've seen, pretty much was from the train. Your pics make me want to check more out.

Next time, get pics of Glenwood. The old New York Central Power Station, which used to provide power to the electrified portion of the railroad, is still there. The train station bldg is a beaut, esp. as seen from just up the street.
Warburton is one street that'll take you right into this neighborhood.

Great pictures. Thank you for sharing. I go to school in Riverdale and am minutes from Yonkers but have sadly never explored Yonkers, due to the fact that I have no car, the subway doesnt go that far and I never attempted to learn the Westchester buses which stop right by me. But now I know I need to head up there!

Yonkers looks pretty good these days. How about some shots of the beautiful suburban neighborhoods near Central Ave? Is the Cross County Center still in existence?

Yep, eastern Yonkers has some very nice semi-suburban neighborhoods that are completely different from the photothread.

There are basically two Yonkers.

Is the Cross County Center still in existence?

Yes, and it's being renovated/expanded because it will soon have competition from a new urbanist development in Northeast Yonkers called Ridge Hill Village.

Hiya ctman.

If you use Metro North, Yonkers is two stops away from you. I don't know how far you are from Riverdale station, but that's one option to consider. Where Yonkers station is, it looks like a hopping area. Westchester Co.'s Bee-Line bus system has, I think, five buses serving the station. Other routes are just blocks from there.

Thanks for the tour. I've been on the metro-north line many times and passed through Yonkers, but never got off to explore.

Great tour! That's one thing I like about New York: even when you leave The City, you're still in the city.

Yonkers is very diverse in its terrain, housing style, ethnic makeup and income levels. I do not mean to say that this photo thread misrepresents Yonkers, but it has big chunks that look very Sleepy Hollow and Tuckahoe, and in fact central Yonkers (Getty I mean Ghetto Square) is the 'bad part' for the whole area regardless of where the NYC city line is. It's one of the few situations where once you go south into NYC by bus or car, it gets dramatically richer!

Great photos, though. It really feels Bronxish in its urban core - this is a doppelganger for the Grand Concourse/Fordham area to my eyes:

Thanks for these photos of Yonkers! I am glad they are sprucing up the riverfront.
