View Full Version : Pittsburgh - Up & Down & All Around

I spent a recent weekend in Pittsburgh visiting a friend. The weather was incredible, it made for a perfect weekend for taking photos.

He lives on the South Side, right off Carson Street. Carson Street is a culture hub lined with bars and shops. It's clean, friendly, and architecturally rich. A must see if you are in town! He lives in a very gritty area, where a new young professional / artist crowd has taken root reviving an old steel neighborhood.

We walked pretty much all over the city. We walked up and down Carson Street, and then spent a good time walking up and down the River Trail. The river trail is nice, with a overgrown and rustic feel. The trees are everywhere, and every quarter mile you are walking under a different bridge.

The downtown area was impressive, yet empty! Given we visited on a weekend, so no one was working. The highrises are elegant and compliment each other nicely. It's a great mix of historic and modern. I'm not a big fan of the new UPMC sign, however. My friend works in the Mellon Bank Building, so you get to see some *bonus* photos from the 40th floor!!

We finally end with a visit to Shanksville, PA to visit the temporary United Flight 93 Memorial.

Enjoy!

Quality images & details! Pittsburgh has a lot of character! The city has many classical architectural structures which are composed with brick or stone materials, including modern high rises which dominate the skyline and we can't forget the old industrial areas. The city also features many hills and it's surroundings is quite lush. Excellent tour!

Wow, nice pics of a real great city. I was really blown away by the natural beauty and architecture when I went there, too bad my pictures didn't come out anywhere near as good as yours, lol. By the way if you don't mind me asking, what kind of camera did you use? :-)

I don't mind at all! I was using my Nikon D40x, with the standard 18-55mm lens.

And thanks for capturing a few of Shanksville. That flag out in the middle of the field is where the plane impacted.

I visited there in October of 2001, and there was a huge brown swatch of earth where the plane crashed. The field has since fully recovered. I also remember that the temp memorial was on the other side of the road. I really hope they move forward with building a permanent memorial there.

Some mechanical engineer should lose his PE for doing this. So typical of an engineer. They take the easy way out, even if it is ugly as all hell. No brainwaves are functionable from the right side of the brain.

Anyways great pictures. When you come back to the Burgh, make sure you visit the East End (Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Friendship, Oakland, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield), and the North Side (especially, the Mexican War Streets)

The temporary memorial was moved because the land owner didn't want it on his property any longer, which I can understand. Neither side made a big stink about it:D So they just moved it across the street. The permanent memorial is supposed to be completed by the 10 year anniversary.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! I need to spend sometime breaking up the photos and putting them into sections, since its like 100+. I'm just so darn busy these days. I thought everyone would enjoy the pics from 40th floor of Mellon. The windows were actually very dirty :/

Cool I was wondering why they did that. Was the parking lot with the guard rails there b/f the crash? I remember when I visited there in 2001 i thought the guard rails looked old, but not seeing any other use for the lot :/

I have a good amount of photos, but I should definataly take more, living in Fishtown and all. Sometimes I feel embarrased taking photos of people in my 'hood as the streets are always crowded with people. I never get the warm fuzzy about taking pics with them in it.

The area was a surface strip mine before that fateful day, so it could very well have been there for parking for employees, but I'm not sure.
