Someone on another thread suggested that Albertans travel within their own province more. So, Where have you been ? Taking the bus or driving through somewhere or stopping for gas doesn't count. I'll go first:
Edmonton (obviously)
Calgary (lived there for four years)
Fort MacMurray (I've managed projects there)
Cold Lake (Work)
Redwater (Work, and it is home to the best Korean restaurant in Alberta)
Camrose
Jasper, both summer and winter
Red Deer (work mostly, I've eaten at a lot of restaurants there too)
Canmore (bike racing and hiking)
Banff
Brooks (was there years & years ago.. barely remember it)
Olds (work)
Vulcan (went on a horrible horrible drunken ice fishing trip)
Alberta Beach (friends' cabin)
High Prairie (just for dinner)
Elk Point (work)
Whitecourt (work)
Drumheller

Calgary - have lived here since 1994
Airdrie - my family used to have some bizarre fixation with the McDonalds up there, I just like driving past the airport and seeing the planes take off
Cochrane - for Ice Cream
Okotoks - various day trips and country drives in my youth
High River - did some of my driver training out in this area
Bragg Creek - usually stop by on the way to or from Kananaskis and used to camp in the area as well
Turner Valley/Black Diamond - mostly small day trips with the family
Edmonton - born there, lived in from 1987 to 1994 and still visit on a roughly semi-annual basis
Stony Plain - my paternal grandmother used to live here (until she passed away), my aunt used to be nearby as well but moved even further west into the countryside
Leduc - stopped by several times before leaving Edmonton... in the past
Banff/Canmore - visited multiple times for skiing, weekend trips, etc.
Lake Louise - sometimes part of the aforementioned Banff weekend trips
Jasper - visited on a holiday back around 1993
Red Deer/Gasoline Alley - stop by most of the times I am going to Edmonton, also used to go up near here for airshows
Lethbridge - visit usually when going down to or back up from Montana, but also once stayed for a few days in a row
Carseland - creepy little town, camped once out near here as well
Vulcan - not sure exactly what we did there, but we did visit if only briefly
Blairmore - have stopped by a few times when going past Frank's slide
Waterton - more old vacation stuff
Drumheller - multiple trips to both the Royal Tyrell and the town itself
Kananaskis - stayed overnight in the village a few times, and have camped out near here
Places I've passed through but can't really have said to visit include Longview, Coutts, and perhaps Edson or Hinton (don't know about the last two as I remember stopping somewhere on the way to Jasper but can't tell where it was).
EDIT: Using a map like Xelebes did on the next page...

Edmonton - raised in the hometown of my mother.
Calgary - been there a couple times, mostly to go to raves. Went there once to go see my brother who had moved there to ply his trade as a pipefitter.
Red Deer - My grandmother lives here and I have a couple cousins living there. I visit it once a month.
St. Albert - my brother's fiancee lives there. I also once banged a girl who lived there. She has a nice house.
Stony Plain - did a job there with my parents. Made me hate working on icy racking - that's scary.
Stettler - Been to this city often. Lots of fond memories at the Zellers there and the White Goose restaurant there. The city where my dad proposed to my mom. Should do a phototour of this city.
Castor - This is where my dad's side is from. They helped start up this town in 1892, now the seat of Paintearth County. I should take a phototour of this town for you guys.
Coronation - I have a aunt and a cousin who lives here. Slightly larger than Castor because of the oil & gas industry there. I should do a phototour of this town.
Heisler - Stopped in this town to do something. Forget what for.
Bawlf - Been to this one too for a little while.
Alix - Nice little under-recognised beach in this town. Quieter Sylvan Lake basically.
Drumheller - Went here once, loved the badlands.
Sylvan Lake - My dad's side would meet here 3 times a year in th 90's to celebrate Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.
Daysland - Stopped in this town to pick up a dog that ran away once we got back home. Nice little town - houses are surprisingly relatively new. Lot of 80's and 90's stock there.
Camrose - My grandmother would meet us here and have dinner there and stuff in the 90's.
Tofield - We had a cabin near Tofield.
Lacombe - I did a 2 day job here with my parents. Very pretty city.
Wetaskiwin - Ol' Reynolds. :)
Millet - Stopped here on a trip to Daysland.
Airdrie - Stopped here to pick up some gas.
Cochrane - passed through here to go to Kananaskis.
Whitecourt - did a job here with my parents at the local hospital. Has really nice hills there and pine forest.
Jasper - stayed in Jasper on trip to Whistler to see my uncle.
Edson - stopped here to have dinner.
Lloydminster - stopped here when moving from Saskatoon to Edmonton and from Devon to Hepburn, SK and from Hepburn, SK to Edmonton.
Smoky Lake - did a job with my parents here.
Mundare - Ol' Ukrainian Heritage Village
Delia - Stopped here to search for any history that was connected to my great-grandfather who had helped found the town.
Leduc - McDonalds, SAAN and Burger Baron - oh and the airport
Devon - lived there for two years
Beaumont - Did a job with my parents here. Also stopped through it once in a while as it was on an alternate path to Castor.
Penhold - Camped there.
Calmar - Dad's friend lived there. We visited a few times and we stayed over there as we moved from Hepburn to Edmonton.
Alberta Beach - Beach time
Halkirk - A family friend lives around there we would visit.
Onoway - Woked with my parents there. Best Burger Baron I've ever eaten at is there, oddly enough.

Good idea for a thread. My list would be twice as long if I included towns where I have worked within 5-10 km of the actual townsites, or passed through/stopped for gas more than 10 times.
Lived in:

Calgary (lived, worked, and attended post secondary, will move back once finished school)
Grande Prairie (did a summer work term for a company's branch office there, visited there several times before I lived there)
Crossfield (lived there this past summer while working for the summer)
Stayed overnight in (hotels, family or friends, camping within city/town boundaries):
Edmonton (sometimes for work. mostly family trips)
Leduc (work trips)
Medicine Hat (family trips)
Drumheller (mostly for work, visited a few times for family/school trips)

Drayton Valley (work trip)
Westlock (visiting family)
Cold Lake (visiting family)
Coalhurst (visiting friends)
Claresholm (visiting family)
Swan Hills (work trip)
Alix (visiting friends)
Spent longer than a gas stop/takeout or drivethru food (at least one sit down meal):
Red Deer (countless stops for sit down meals on work and leisure trips)
High Level (nearest commercial centre to where I used to live, so groceries, banking, restaurants, etc.)
Manning (see High Level, plus a one screen movie theatre)
Nanton (stopped a few times for meals)
Taber (stopped a few times for meals, went to a school related sporting event there, visited friends)
Strathmore (passed through nearly every day for most of one summer, sometimes had lunch or breakfast, all work related)
Langdon (several work-related lunches)
Cochrane (visiting family and friends, couple work-related visits)
Carstairs (worked in townsite a few days)
Didsbury (worked in townsite a few days)
Sylvan Lake (camping nearby with family, had lunch a few times in town, waterpark)

Dixonville (went to a curling tournament there)
Fort MacLeod (passed through lots of times, visited friends, stopped for meals a few times)

I'm going to have to start from the south and work my way north, these places are all ones I've been overnight.... I've added comments to places that I've spent more significant time in
Milk River (Writing on Stone)
Waterton Park (gorgeous if it isn't windy)
Pincher Creek
Crowsnest Pass
Lethbridge (relatives live there)
Fort Macleod
Taber
Medicine Hat
Cypress Hills (I'd highly recommend anyone who's never been to check this place out. Probably the most underrated in all of Alberta)
Claresholm
Brooks (Probably the town in southern Alberta I frequent the most, because of family in the area. I don't care if people say the place stinks, I like this city!)
Drumheller
Hanna
Chauvin
Calgary
Canmore
Banff
Lake Louise
Kananaskis
Cochrane
Sundre
Didsbury
Three Hills
Red Deer
Delburne
Castor
Halkirk
Stettler
Alix
Lacombe (hello nice architecture!)
Bentley (In my opinion the most scenic small town in all of Alberta)
Rocky Mountain House
Nordegg (love that area)
Rimbey
Ponoka
Alliance (small town in a beautiful valley just south of Killam)
Drayton Valley
Pigeon Lake area
Calmar
Killam
Wetaskiwin (good ol' Reynolds Museum)
Camrose
Pretty much everywhere in the Edmonton metro area, as that's home-base
Vegreville
Vermillion
Llyodminster
Alberta Beach
Entwistle
Edson/Peers
Hinton
Jasper
Grande Cache (underrated mountain getaway)
Barrhead
Neerlandia (I wish the dutch bakery up there was still open...)
Westlock
Smoky Lake
Boyle
Athabasca
Slave Lake
Peace River
Manning
La Crete (farthest north I've been in Alberta...)
As for places I'd love to visit but admittedly haven't yet:
Grande Prairie
Fort Mac
Fort Chip
Any decent camping along highway 43, and probably Valleyview/Whitecourt, just to say I've been there
High Level
Elk Point (namely Whitney Lakes Provincial Park)
Cold Lake
Lac La Biche
I've always found the area just south of Calgary from Bragg Creek to Pincher Creek to be scenic, but I've always viewed it from my car window. I'd love to camp in those areas, in the foothills mind you, but stay for more than a few hours
Wainright
I'd also LOVE to drive the entire Icefields parkway from Banff to Jasper, I tend to get off at highway 11 for the sake of time getting back to Edmonton, but it's a BIG to-do.
I'm probably forgetting some places, but it's always nice to hear what places other people highly recommend.

Unless you have a park pass already. And if you had planned on stopping anywhere you'd need at least the day pass anyways. However the fact that he said he usually goes up to #11 means he probably knows that :P

Cool. My family goes back 5 generations. We had a family reunion there a couple years back from my grandmother's side (only 4 generations back) but there was over 200 people there. Can't imagine 7 generations back. Apparently if we went to the big family clan reunion in San Diego, there would have been 5,000 of us gophers had we all attended.

I did remote site support for my first gig here, so I've been to nearly every small town of any size between the border and Peace country. Literally.
Shit, I've even been to, and eaten in, Water Valley - at least a dozen times. Most people don't even know it exists!
When you're on the road a lot, and hungry, you tend to visit a lot of out of the way places. A great way to learn a new province - I think I know rural Alberta better than I ever did rural MB, even though I spent 5x more of my life there.

Heh. I do it at least once (if not 3 or 4 times) per year, myself. Have been since long before moving here. I find it astounding that anyone who lives within 500km of it hasn't done the drive for fun.
It's not just the best highway in Canada. Some call it the most beautiful highway in the world. Certainly in any experienced road tripper's top 10, from the people I talk to.
If you get off at 11, you've never experienced the Big Bend. !!!!. Seriously, that's one cool piece of highway that you won't see anywhere else.

Working in the oil patch (the service sector) I have been to a huge number of towns across Alberta. Oddly enough though I have spent little time south of Calgary, most of my work took place in north, central, east, west, or southeast Alberta.
You get so used to driving in the country that when you come to a 'big town' (like Rocky Mtn House for example) that you get frustrated because you hit a red light at the only traffic light in town. You quickly learn the best places to eat, and where you can find 24 hr gas stations.

I finally got me a Tetris cabinet, and WBML would make a fine addition to the obsession. :D

i think you and i are the only two here that know that little hole in the ground exists. or we're the only two that will admit it
+2. I have some friends that live in that town. They tend to tell everyone they live in Lethbridge just to hide the shame though... Forgot to mention Nobleford and Iron Springs in my list.
Wabasca is another place I've never been, but my dad used to go up there every now and then for work, and always said I wasn't missing much...

Edmonton is my favorite city in Alberta, but Waterton is my fave place there.
Favorite major city: Edmonton
Favorite mid-sized city: Medicine Hat (don't ask me why...)
Favorite town/city over 10,000: Toss-up... Lacombe, Cochrane, Canmore, Brooks all top the list.
Favorite towns between 5,000 and 10,000: Stettler, Drumheller, Banff
Smaller... Jasper, Waterton (town), Bentley, Alliance, Pincher Creek, Nanton and Claresholm
Favorite place: Although Waterton would rank high, I'd have to probably go with either Dinosaur Provincial Park or Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park
Favorite drives: Highway 2 from Airdrie to Fort Macleod, Highway 22 from Sundre to Bragg Creek, Highway 1 from Medicine Hat to Saskatchewan border, Pretty much EVERY approach to the Rockies.

highway 2 north of Edmonton to Sexsmith is an amazing drive as well. it adds a lot of time to your trip, but its worth it.

Highway 22 from Drayton Valley to around Caroline is pretty nice as well... I just advise not driving it in a torrential downpour like I did the last time. From Sundre through to Bragg Creek isn't bad either, but I've driven that part so many times that I don't really pay attention to it anymore.

Highway 22 from Black Diamond south to Highway #3 gets my vote.
That and the Icefields parkway between Jasper and Lake Louise are the two most scenic drives.

Anybody else been to Milo?
I couldn't even try to remember all the towns in AB I've been to. My dad and I used to fish a lot all over the province when I was a kid. Chances are if the town is near water, I've been to it.
Yup a couple of times..
I used to work for IBM a few years back, and one of the projects I had involved traveling to almost every ATB branch in the province, so I ended going to all kinds of little towns everywhere including Milo. Later I did another sweep of the province this time for Royal Bank and all their branches.
I've driven pretty much every piece of highway in Alberta. My favorites drives are:
- Hwy 22 from Black Diamond to hwy3
- Hwy south of hwy 3 into Waterton is beautiful
- Banff to Jasper. Spectacular
- Hwy 2 from Hondo past Slave Lake until hwy 49 is quite nice
- Smith Dorrain trail (west of Canmore). It's not really a highway, but it's a beautiful drive, just like the trip from Bragg creek to Elbow Falls

the crowsnest from Lethbridge straight to Vancouver is the best drive in the country.

the crowsnest from Lethbridge straight to Vancouver is the best drive in the country.
I like that trip, but my own preference is Calgary to Vancouver, taking the old #1 through Fraser Valley, and that stretch from Golden to Salmon Arm is spectacular. The drive through Banff and Lake Louise is also among the best scenery in the country.

I agree with Distill3d, The Crowsnest is a spectacular drive. As is hwy 6 and hwy 3A.... Digressing a bit from the thread here but if you wanted to talk the best drives in BC & AB, the best AB drive would have to be the Icefields Parkway and the best BC drive would have to be the drive from Parksville to Tofino.

I used to have a job doing communications work for the Royal Bank accross Alberta and NWT so I've seen and stayed in at least every city/town with an RBC branch. I've been with Shaw the last few years and often get to visit all the repeater sites on the nationall fiber backbone - typically in smaller towns and villages. Those places are some of the most interesting i find.
This is not work related, but i just did some camping out in the Hinton area and decided to go check out the Ogre Canyon. To get there you have to pass through the Hamlet of Brule' - very nice. Recommend the Ogre Canyon to anyone who likes going off the beaten path. In the spring you'd have to fjord a couple of mountain streams, but this time of year it's just a 8km stretch of jagged rocky road. The old Taurus wagon made it through OK.

Someone on another thread suggested that Albertans travel within their own province more. So, Where have you been ? Taking the bus or driving through somewhere or stopping for gas doesn't count. I'll go first:
Fort MacMurray (I've managed projects there)
lol, u sure u WORKED there? u totally spelled the city wrong!

Well, I didn't include every place I played hockey in. Obviously, I played hockey in Stony Plain and Beaverlodge as well. But I've also played at Northlands Coliseum (well, that's what it was called when I played there).
