Does "Bier trinkt man nicht nur sum frühstück." make sense to those of you that speak German?

In English, the slogan was translated something like" Beer is now not only for the morning anymore".

Anyway, this is off of a local microbreweries shirt and they wanted me to check to see if the German made sense.

Thanks. The shirt was actually zum not sum. Why do you use zum frühstück and not für frühstück?

As an English speaker, who knows a little German, I would have thought that it would have been: Man trinkt Bier nicht nur für frühstück.

What is the word "zum"?

It is not wrong and emphatises the Bier, but imo here in Germany, we would say:
Man trinkt Bier nicht nur zum Frückstück. It means, People does not drink Bier only at Breakfast.
zum is the preposition zu + Dativ (der, das) Frühstück. But with movement meaning. It would mean in English in the Breakfast not for Breakfast.
But I personnaly hate Oktoberfest and bier at all, even living in Munich for more than 10 years.

Awesome, I'm glad I was on the right track thinking that it started as you had said with Man trinkt..

The der, die, das thing is rough for a non native German speaker to get straight. Especially in some cases where die can be der, des, or dem...etc..

 Aber warum? Ich liebe Deutschbier. I think that's right. ;) Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, anyone?

Indeed, 2taall. I took nearly a year of German and I still can't get my dative, or genitive, nominative, accusative, etc. Wann will Deutsch sprechen ich, habe ich keine ahnung. :haha:

I prefer first Möet Chandon :D or Ruinart, Dom Perignon... whatever. Also a Coke is more tasteful than Bier... More than 10 years here in Germany, for me has only 'die' everything is female, woman, so only 'die' and even tried to understand genitive, additive, accusative,,, I will never learn, so i put all like die.

I often have some Weizen or two of this brand. This kind of beer was a very regional phenomenon for centuries in germany and even to today is for many people.
For me the popular Pilsener first invented in old chekoslovakia seems to taste nearly like the river rhine water or even piss. :-)

The slogan is trying to be funny. It´s like drinking a beer and saying to some one,"What are you looking at! One can drink beer any time of the day, not only at breakfast time!" Meaning, of course, that the guy is a slush - and proud of it.
