This is a list of cities with 500 000 +, not EVERY city and town you've been to!
Cambridgite
10-24-2008, 01:39 AM
No offense to K-Dubyians, but Kitchener Waterloo does not exceed 500K.
Depends on the numbers you go by. Officially, you're right. The 2006 census says the Kitchener CMA is 451,235. This is 2006 and it does not include the student population nor the townships of Wilmot and Wellesley, which are also in the Region of Waterloo. The sign on Townline Road says that the Region of Waterloo has 508,000 people and that was put up in 2006. I would estimate our population to be around 520,000 now.
Likewise, I've seen the London CMA (457,720) and Halifax CMA (372,858) put on this list. Same thing applies, that neither the student populations of Dalhousie, Western, or Fanshawe are included. In conclusion, Kitchener, London, and Halifax technicially shouldn't be on anyone's list here. :)
Now that we're done with the administrative stuff here, I will list the cities of over 500,000 that I've been too.
In Canada:
Toronto
Montreal
Ottawa
Hamilton
Though I know I'm not supposed to put them on my list for reasons mentioned above, I've been to London and Halifax and live in Kitchener.
The US of A:
Visited in an extensive way:
Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater
Orlando
Syracuse
(Mobile, AL, is not quite 500,000, but close)
Passed through on the way to somewhere else:
Buffalo
Detroit
Flint (almost 500,000)
Toledo (big enough?)
Dayton
Cincinatti
Louisville
Knoxville
Chattanooga (big enough?)
Atlanta
^ Basically, I've passed through much of the rustbelt and am most familiar with the southeastern states. Yeah...I really need to travel more. :(

What I am curious about is how much of the travel displayed here was personal, and how much was on business.
Personally, much of my in-Canada travel was on business. However, I've never travelled outside Canada for my work.

my travel is generally for fun....i have had the bug since i was a little kid.
in university my friends and i would drive like maniacs every chance we got....once i even drove my little RX7 to mexico city from winnipeg...after my bachellors degree, i bought a VW van and drove all over north america with a friend.....we finally parked it in whistler and skiied all winter.
i went to university in copenhagen so that gave me a base to travel around europe and at the U of M i took a design studio in nepal, so i was able to see some of asia.
after i graduated i worked for a year at a firm in jerusalem, so that got me to the middle east.
since then it has been trips basically 2-3 weeks at a time....last summer i flew to budapest, rented a car and drove through the balkans to istanbul.....last fall, i went to the rugby world cup in france, then drove up through england and golfed st. andrews in scotland.....and this summer, i went to china....all just for fun.
my goal has always been to beat gretzky's record and visit 50 countries before i turned 38, but i am at 48 countries with a few years to spare, so i will need a new goal.
the secret is be an adult with no kids.....
off topic, but i just happened to be going through these photos....check out the ball washers at the old course in st. andrews.

Why do people keep writing Halifax here? It's metro is well below the 500K mark.
Let me repeat: Halifax is not to be included on this list as it is not over 500,000 population mark.

Never been to Hamilton?
In spirit ... been to a dump up north to watch some bears
I've traveled somewhat. I've done the whole student back-packing thing across Europe and been to a couple dozen metros for business, but I'm more of a creature of habit. I like to go into a pub or restaurant, be recognized by all and have my drink waiting at the table. I'd rather go to New York or Paris for the umpteen time to continue exploring than to start somewhere new.
^this is your official invitation to add one with a short 14 hour drive east....

No offense to K-Dubyians, but Kitchener Waterloo does not exceed 500K.
Fair enough, I've always just rounded KW and London up in my head to 500,000. FWIW, The 2007 population for Waterloo Region, according to the Ontario Ministry of Finance, was 496400, growing 5000 from 2006. So, while not refering to the CMA, the Region almost certainly exceeded 500,000 for the first time this year.

Just realized Reno is under 500,000 too. Guess I'll scratch that one off... Funny. It always seemed bigger when I was there. Certainly bigger than Des Moines, yet that cities metro is over 500,000...

I've driven/caught flights through countless cities with metro's over 500,000.
Cities that I have actually visited are:
Canada
Kitchener
Toronto
Montreal
Ottawa
Quebec City
Hamilton
Calgary
United States
Buffalo?
Cleveland
(I haven't really stopped at any big cities in the states, but rather drove through them)
Atlanta (drove through)

Amsterdam (layover)
Munich (airport)
Ljubljana (not quite 500,000)

*Whenever I've gone to New York, I've stayed and a freinds house in North Bergen, NJ, and actually ended up spending more time in NB, Union City, West New York, Hoboken, Jersey City, and Newark. I don't know whether to consider that are a part of NYCs Metro or not. As I would likely get shot by any Jersey folks if I did, and if I didn't i'd be going against what makes sense in my head considering how many peopl in Jersey work in NYC.
Is St. Catharines, Ontario over 500k?
It has 390,000 people, and I think its population growth is pretty stagnant. The Niagara area doesn't do as well as the rest of the Golden Horseshoe.

the united states was the only foreign country stephen harper had visited before he became leader of her majesty's loyal opposition at the age of 43.

Travel is expensive. Not everyone is as fortunate as some of us are to have been able to see much of the world.
And it's no crime either to personally have little interest in travelling outside one's own corner of the planet.
I've only been out of the Lake Superior watershed five or six times, and all of those times it was just to Atikokan. (I'm related to Atikokan. :D)

Some of us here are also young. I am 21, for example. However, that doesn't mean that I, or others, WON'T travel outside of the continent. I am planning to go to Europe with a bunch of friends in a couple of years. Eventually, I would also love to visit the great megacities of the Far East (ie. Shanghai, Tokyo, etc). From my travels, I at least know enough to pinpoint that there certainly differences between Canadian and American culture, even if they're relatively subtle. One step at a time, I guess.

Definately not until they are out of the "are we there yet? stop staring at me! are we there yet? stop poking me! are we there yet? quit making farting noises! are we there yet? Mom, tell him to stop breathing on me! are we there yet? are we there yet? ARE WE THERE YET?????????????? :D

You're right on about that. Nothing is worse than having a screaming baby or a restless toddler kicking the back of your seat the whole flight.

I've taken my kid on a plane already, when he was 5 months old. It was only a 2 1/2 hour flight, though. Only shat his pants once, thank god. Other than that he was a good, quiet behaved little man.
A trip now is more difficult because of juggling two work schedules to get vacation days at the same time (my wife's a nurse, and doesn't get much vacation - or not the days she prefers). Going on a vacation alone would be nice :hmmm: but I'm not that mean. "but honey, it's for work.. I have no choice, sorry!" :D)
