Auto mall planned for Langley

The former BC Hydro site along Langley Bypass is to be a new type of dealership.

A 15-acre site at Glover Road and the Langley Bypass will be turned into a massive auto complex, complete with five high-end car dealerships and retail, office, and restaurant space.

OpenRoad Auto Group, which has nine dealerships in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, is behind the project. Anthem Properties submitted plans to the City. Neither firm would comment on the project.

Five separate dealerships will take up about two thirds of the space, with the rest set aside for the mixed use.

Some of the space in the new auto mall will be devoted to hospitality elements such as a restaurant.

The site includes some unzoned land and some of the last agriculturally zoned land within City limits, said Gerald Minchuk, the City's development services director.

The unzoned land was part of the right-of-way for Langley Bypass, and was owned by the provincial ministry of highways.

Council passed two readings to the rezone the land and amend its Official Community Plan at its meeting on Oct. 20.

The project goes to public hearing on Nov. 3, with third reading scheduled for later that evening.

Minchuk said the City won't give final approval until the developer has obtained support for the project from other levels of government, such as the Ministries of Transportation, and Fisheries and Oceans. A portion of the site runs along Logan Creek.

The land once held the BC Hydro office, and later housed the Delphi School, a sports-based private school.

The site has been vacant for several years.

As an auto enthusiast, I like the sounds of this.

The southside of the river needs a BMW and Audi dealer, and I would really hope to see that here.
