The 1901 schwebebahn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwebebahn_Wuppertal) is an electric monorail in the German city Wuppertal that 'rides' a 13 kilometer (8 miles) suspended track in 30 minutes. Part of the tracks are above the small river Wupper, another part is above streets. The suspended railway also 'crosses' a large Bayer chemicals industrial site. Sometimes the 'Kaiserwagen' carriage from 1900 has special tours (see photo #10).

All photos taken 11 October 2008.

Wow, thank you so much.

Those are some of the best pictures of the fabulous Schwebebahn I have seen so far.

I have to admit I have a slight obsession with it, it's so unique, urban and photogenic and I still haven't seen it in person. :(

I always wanted to go to Wuppertal only because of the metro but never managed to.

Great great pics, thanks for posting!

I love those. It doesn't look like much capacity. I remember one in the movie "Farenheit 451"

Looks totally out of place and brutal but damn cool too!

The age is really impressive, it would be cool if somewhere close made a modern version of it :)

I love the Schwebebahn. I remember when I first saw it, I was like seven years old sitting in the back seat of my parents' car, and had no idea what those weird trains were. :haha:
