I've seen those before. I'd have to say the black widow is the most dangerous though. The others are just big.
I used to find these everywhere in Kelowna. My mom found one dead in my sister's bed once.

I do recall scorpions and black widow spiders in the Okanagan. Plus those really gnarly wolf spiders.

Arg! There whould be a warning in the thread title for us arachnophobes!
We had a black widow infestation in our house in Winfield...the whole east side of the valley was crawling with them one summer
Absolutely terrifying.
And the scary part with the global warming, makes you wonder what other insects and animals are going to enter the regions in the future. And we are going to be clueless about them not knowing anything about the new creatures which really could be a big problem.

Yeah BC has lots of bugs, Earwigs creep me out the most, I left my bathing suit on the rail of my Grandparents deck to dry overnight after swimming in the pool and found 3 or 4 of them in there one time. lol

About 10 years ago in maple Ridge i went into the garage and found an all black spider that was about the size of the palm of my hand (with the legs spread out). It was the meanest looking spider i have ever seen, so of course i had to poke it with a stick. While most spiders would cower this spider went nuts and started attacking the stick. Thats when i decided to leave it alone, hehe.
Another bug i have seen here in BC i never got a name for was a large beetle that had entenas about 6 inches long. It was the craziest thing i had seen.

When I was living in Edmonton my company got a shipment of equipment from Nigeria. When my colleague and I opend the crate a bunch of spiders ran out, it scared the crap out of me. It was the midle of winter so I don't think they lasted long.

I worked for a warehouse in BC and basically everything we received was from China. Things I can remember coming across include: lizards, millions of tiny spiders, cockroaches, various other beetles, bird shit, decent amounts of blood, a mushroom, a lighter, and asian newspapers.

my friend worked at a store that imported furniture from china and they had one buffet side board thing that was probably found on some farm and he opened the bottom and it was full of chicken poop
was probably used as a chicken coop or something now selling here as an antique

huh. and china is so stringent on what comes in from everywhere. if you ship something to china, it cannot be on a wooden pallet because that could house bugs and rats, so they make you ship your shipment on plastic pallets....thought i'd throw that in for good measures
Thunder Bay has the biggest spiders!

Zygiella x-notata, iirc, is Latin for "curls up and dies of fright when you touch it". That thing was really less than an inch long. They're fun to watch. They live in my window. Dozens of them. Sometimes they come indoors, too! :)

Not overly big, but very unlike the ones we are used to seeing around here.

I have family in Winfield :) Love it there.
Also, Alberta has spiders too. So many that they require their own website

That is pretty rare for Australia. This is much more common in South America's Amazon, where there is at least (to my knowledge) one species of tarantula the size of a dinner plate that preys on large birds, especially nesting mothers and chicks.

My dad has always said he would love to visit the Amazon, but he's a squeamish guy. I watched a show on all the creepy crawlers of the rainforest, I'm not sure how much he would actually enjoy himself.

Seen a tarantula when I was in South Africa earlier this year. It was almost the size of my hand.
Don't really have arachnophobia but that thing moving fast towards you was pretty creepy...

perhaps it was a mouse........
this little guy was about the size of my fist........ tropics of belize found it while racking the leaves in the yard captured it took it up to the road and shot pics of it then let it go

I lived in BC for 13 years and the worst we ever had were hobo spiders.
EARWIGS though were absolutely terrifying where I lived...

When I was on SaltSpring Island {hence the id 'ssiguy'} I say a spider that was the size of my palm. I'm not shittin you either. The body was the size of a timbit!
I rent from an Aussie and he says that in Sydney you NEVER put on your shoes or sandels without emptying them for fear of spiders. In Tasmania the ants are monsterous and sting and you have to be very careful in house or out.

It's amazing how spiders survive everywhere... like in the middle of downtown MTL you never see any mosquitoes, flies, etc. but there are tons of spiders in windows and street lamps

Vancouver is by far the WORST city in Canada in terms of spider population density, likely due to the milder climate. No matter where I stay in Vancity, or anywhere in the lower mainland, there are spiders everywhere I turn. I don't hate spiders, but I'm not a big fan of them either.
