Here's a fun guessing game since we know mostly what projects are proposed for next year how many cranes do you think there will be on Peninsular Halifax and Dartmouth in 2009? :)

Of course since its November feel free to hold of your vote until next month but I am going to close the poll on New Year's Eve.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2009 Cranes:

1 X LSRC
1 X Academic Building

Total: 2

For me right now I'm going to guess 5-6 cranes since we have so many projects proposed;

-Alexander
-Trillium (since demolition has taken place and condos are selling)
-LSRC (not sure if this would require a crane though)
-5552 Kaye St
-Salter Street Block
-one other maybe Harbour Isle or Trinity.

Trinity is on hold, probably won't happen in 2009

The rest i would think will follow the same path.

I said 5-6 as well. But I'm getting technical. Some projects will probably have two cranes.
1 for the LSRI
2 for Trillium
1 for Dals new management building. I also think this one we will see before christmas.
2 for Salters Block

I'd like to think we will see the Alexander, but I don't know about that.

I would imagine that each of the 3 new buildings at Dal will require a crane.

Not sure what the chances are of the Salters block moving forward in the spring. Have they started the boardwalk improvements yet? That will be huge, but it's been floating around for years now.

I could see the Trillium pre-selling the required number of condos pretty quickly.

Three new buildings at Dal? As an alumnus, I'm intrigued. Enlighten me please.

There will be one new building on the former management site and two new medical buildings next to the Tupper Building (more lab/incubator space than academic space).

Dalhousie has really improved its campus over the past few years. Of course, it was pretty much necessary given enrollment and the fact that very little was built during the 80s and 90s.

We have to be one of the few smaller cities that has inter-city university competition.

MSVU is renvoating the motherhouse, Dal is adding many new buildings, and SMU has a massive Campus Master Plan that will nearly double the number of buildings on the block.

I see that my magical number "6" is becoming a popular choice. Of course ther might only be couple of projects, but with multiple cranes.

I am wondering if the new Administrative building at Dal would need a crane? Isn't it only three or four stories.

Well, it is clearly not going to be zero cranes.

So, what if a development has more than one crane on site, do we count each one individually? Or by guessing a number of cranes, are we simply guessing the number of construction sites requiring at least one crane?
:P

Well since it says cranes i guess we're counting the overall number of cranes even if there is two at one site. I based my guess on the number of construction sites since i dont know what ones need more than one crane...

Just base it on whatever you feel is a better answer for this thread.

If the Armour Group wins its appeal I would say you'll see a crane for the Waterside development in 2009.

Well looking at current news from Trillium, Salter St and King's Wharf its looking possible that we could see all three start sometime next year. Since these are all the highest qualities projects around for me;

1 going up = :)

2 going up = :D

All 3 going up = :worship:

It will probably be about two years before we see any cranes at Kings Wharf. They have at least a full year of just infrastructure building before the can start on any of the actual buildings. And then it takes a while to dig and lay foundations as well.

^True I forgot about the infastructure need. Well in lieu of King's Wharf I'll dance if the Trillium, Salter St and International Place (long shot probably) have cranes next year.

So anybody want to change their votes?

Its the start of December and there's already cranes for the LSRC and Dalhousie

Even though I got mixed up on the buildings here. The LRSC building will for sure have a crane soon and the Trillium will have a crane or two by next year. So that means we can count on three or four construction cranes on the pennsula next year for sure. Hopefully there wil be more. Salter's Landing I'm crossing my fingers on and the Waterside Centre could also be a possibility depending.

This is just Halifax peninsula area. There will also be one at the Waterton development and then there is also the possibilty of Harbour Isle and Kings Wharf.

Wishbalde or anyone else...how tall is this tower near micmac mall?

I would think that Notting Village would require a crane, and I have heard that the YMCA buildings are close to going ahead, albeit this was in the summer, but those would use a large mobile crane.

What YMCA is that?

Not sure, I've done some poking around about it and haven't been able to find much of anything. I would assume it would fit in with the height of the 2 other towers @ ~16 floors..?

Noticed today that they are putting up the crane at the Life Sciences Research Centre site.

It's looking like theres a slight possibility we might see a crane for international place up this year.

This year? i gather you mean 2009 :haha:
I wish your statement was fact, but not very confident we will see it. leasing would be extremely slow

Jonovision

lol, yes, I meant 2009.
I have a feeling they might already have some leases. They wouldn't be doing geotechnical work if they didn't have intentions of starting construction soon. Geotechnical work can only be done once the structural plan has been completed. So therefore this is the beginning of the prep work for the site.

A crane for the LSRI is going up now. That makes two cranes on the Dal campus.

Somewhat correct in most cases, however the depth of the parking garage (5 stories) would place a number of floors below the tidal zone and therefore they could be verifying this now so to formulate their structural drawings.

As for leases, no one but the developer knows this at this point.

So a little update on cranes so far;

-LSRC has one up,
-Academic Building (Dal) has one up,
-Emera just got approved and judging by the size of the building to be renovated a crane could be necessairy,
-Trillium is ongoing,
-IP is conducting geotechincal work so if its possible to see one next year,

Alrighty now that the poll is closed and its the new year I'll be keeping a tab on the first post of how many cranes we get over the year.

hey DJ...how did you vote?...or is that a secret..

Dmajackson
Jan 3, 2009, 6:13 PM
I voted for the 5-6 category like most of the people. I'm glad I did too. Its seems possible to get that many cranes up this year assuming that we dont go into a "Depression" within the next few months.

man to bad about this economic downturn...it probably cost us a few cranes for sure

So we are at 2 right now?

Yepp and its only the begginning of January. :)

And since most projects get started in the spring after the ground thaws we are on a good pace to get 5 or so.

P.S. if we feel like cheating we can say the NSCC CBE crane counts since it can be see from downtown :P

So heres a question. When, if ever, should we expect a crane for the Power Plant redevelopment?
