I'm curious to know what is the Trans Canada Trail like in your part of Canada? Some pictures would be awesome :)

Here in NS we have a make-shift trail set-up with trails complete mainly in the northern section of the province. In Halifax there are four seperate trails;

1) The Blueberry Run trail is an old railbed on the Eastern Shore connecting Musquodoboit Vally with Lawerencetown Beach.

2) The Cole Harbour Salt March Trail connects Dartmouth to Lawerencetown via an old rail bed cut across the Harbour. From personal experience i can say this is an absolutely stunning trail.

3 & 4) Are the Shubie Canal Trails reaching from Portebello to the Waterfront in Dartmouth. Two new bridges have been completed recently; one crosses Lake Banook at the Circ and the other crosses the Canal on the Waterfront.

I believe the eventual plans call for something like this but i might be mistaken; from Alderney Landing in Dartmouth the trail crosses the McDonald Bridge into Halifax, uses the new trail currently u/c along Barrington Street, connects to the Boardwalk on the Waterfront, cuts through the South-End until the proposed Greenway, follows that to the recently abandoned tracks on Joesph Howe Dr, follows these tracks until it connects to the Timberlea-Beechville T'trails system and then i have no clue after that. I imagine that the trail will eventually connect to Peggy's Cove or continue down the South Shore to Keji.

So whats the TCT like in your neck of the woods?

^^ Trans Canada Trail. A nation-wide network of recreational trails. Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Canada_Trail)

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6153/2005071301bo4.jpg

Just off the TCT in Port Arthur's West End, along the McIntyre River. There are subdivisions on either side of the trees, when I took this you could hear the houses under construction but couldn't see them no matter how hard you try. The subdivision is done now so it's quieter. When water levels are low enough, you can go to a rocky islet in the middle of the river and just enjoy the peace and quiet. The city has plans to expand the recreation trails here a lot, and will be building a big TCT centre (probably with indoor facilities, information about the TCT, etc.) in the future. The centre is on hold, but the expanded trails were approved with a plan to build tonnes of rec trails and 110km of bike lanes on city streets. I'm quite excited about it. :)

It also goes through the Cascades Conservation Area with a huge network of paved and unpaved trails, (pictures (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=thunder%20bay%20cascades&ct=6&z=t&mt=photos)) which are very popular here.

I found some pictures (all by me) for the TCT in Halifax:

This is the railcut near Tower Road. If my sources are correct the trail will eventually border the cut on the left hand side of this picture with a footbridge in the background. This is all part of the Halifax Urban Greenway (http://www.halifaxurbangreenway.org/).

And some digging into my Flickr accounts (dmajackson10 and eaglewood_dj) I've found the map for the proposed route of the TCT in Halifax. I'm pretty sure its from the Halifax Urban Greenway website....

Oh yeah, the now closed Kinghorn line has been proposed to be a recreation trail, which would link Thunder Bay to Geraldton.

It passes in my backyard (litterally meters from it).

I really enjoyed Cascades.

This is a map of the proposed routing of the TCT through northern Ontario from Thunder Bay to the north shore of Lake Huron showing the completed sections.

Much of the TCT through Eastern Ontario runs along abandoned railways.

This is on the Cataraqui section between Napanee and Smith's Falls:

It goes into Ottawa on the paved recreational pathways and passes right underneath Parliament Hill:

Then you have to squeeze through the catwalk on the Ottawa Locks to cross the Rideau Canal:

It crosses into Quebec and heads up the Gatineau Hills. It connects with another old railway towards Maniwaki, which still has some stations standing:

I have no idea what it looks like in Quebec, I don't even know where it goes through.

You know what might be a cool idea. Somehow connecting the TCT to the Appalachian Trail in the U.S. Then not only would Canada have the longest continuous trail in the world we would also have a connection to one of the other long trails.

Does the Pacific Coast have a trail like the Appalachain Trail?

They already do. The IAT continues from the AT into Canada at Perth-Andover NB, where it joins up into the TCT.

Yep, the Pacific Crest Trail (http://www.pcta.org/about_trail/overview.asp).
Not sure, perhaps a hiker from BC can confirm, but I would expect that the PCT also links to the TCT since the PCT ends officially just south of Manning.

BTW, this is a great topic - albeit not very skyscraper oriented.

Personally, I've hiked about a third of the PCT and maybe a quarter of the AT. Since the TCT isn't finished, I've no idea how much of it I've hiked, but I have hiked it in 7 provinces so far. Great pictures so far - keep em coming!

Thanks "Shreddog".

Well the question is how many threads in the Canada section are skyscraper related? :P

Personally I've only walked the sections in Halifax (Shubie Canal, Cole Harbour, Boardwalk, Alderney Landing, ect).

I've ridden my mountain bike on a fair portion of the part of the TCT that runs along the southern portion of BC, mostly on old railway right-of-ways. The last one was from Christina Lake to Castlegar.

In Edmonton, the TCT is actually the river valley trail system that cuts right through the middle of the city. Safe to say I've walked or biked the entire Edmonton region TCT many times.

Does the PCT connect to anything in Mexico?
