View Full Version : Super-Blocks

Over the many years I spent walking around Halifax I've noticed that other than our strange gridlock systems that don't match up we also have a unnessecairy amount of "super-blocks" (huge blocks created where roads used to be). Here are some of them;

- IWK - Grace - VG Buildings - VG Parking Lot

- Metro Centre - WTCC

- Abermarle Street has two massive blocks on either side

- Artillery Park

- Trade Mart Block

I've always wanted some these blocks to be broken up and have the old street layout to be restored. Am I the only person who thinks this should happen? If not which ones would you restore? And what would you do with the new block(s)?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me there and my years spent walking around SGR and the South-End there are two particularly annoying "super-blocks"; VG/IWK and Metro Centre/WTCC.

When the new WTCC is built they should extend Grafton (assuming theres space) up to Duke St and promote the site for mid-rise (viewplane i think) with an emphasis on ground floor retail or entertainment.

As for the VG this site is also under study for redevelopment. They should break it into three blocks by extending Tower Road and a new street in behind the IWK Hospital. Of course the IWK would remain the same, the new hospital would be squeezed into one block and where the parking lot is now should become parkland like it used to be. Just a nice little park the Victoria Park.

What do you guys think?

I always thought that Clyde Street probably use to be Bishop until Tuns wiped it out.

Some buildings are just too large to fit in Halifax's small sized blocks...

True but there are some unneccairily big blocks. For example if they tried they could squeeze the VG into a smaller block mainly by installing either a parking garage or underground parking. Certain ones like the Metro Centre i can understand taking up many blocks. At the VG they took out Tower Road and didn't even put a building on top. They simply put a parking lot in.

Well... the parking lot has always been there... they simply blocked off the road a few years ago for whatever reason. I think it had something to do with a reconfiguration of the ER entrance at the time. Not sure.
