There are a lot of OT threads here, so lets get more on topic. This is a thread to show off nice buildings of any size / type.

Here is an example of a cool house in Calgary http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=10627

Vancouver has a fair amount of BLEH architecture, however there are some buildings, such as the Museum of Athropology at UBC that are interesting.

Port Arthur

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2259/2242798383_1673a4e41b_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22292497@N05/2242798383/)
Karen R (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22292497@N05/)

Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. 1909. Henry Simpson. Queen Anne style with Flemish influences.

Forms the western quarter of Waverly Park, which is Ontario's second oldest municipal park. The high school was closed in 2007, and the building is now owned by Lakehead University, which is working on retrofitting the building for it's faculty of education, I think.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/2940994944_0f8325b7d4.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrmojophoto/2940994944/)
Morris Chisholm (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrmojophoto/)

Whalen Building. 913. Brown and Vallance, Architects. Very subtle Neo-Gothic style with Beaux Arts influences.

This is the Lakehead's oldest skyscraper. (Duluth has buildings taller than this, that predate it by a quarter century.) It is the head office of Thunder Bay Hydro and has a variety of government and private offices in it.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2079/2795756525_a4320f6b9d_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2795756525/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

189 Red River Road. 1989. Local Architect with guidance from Arthur Erickson. Post Modernism.

Only four storeys tall but twice the volume of the nearby Prince Arthur Hotel (1910; 6 storeys; Chicago School) this is easily the most recognizable building in Port Arthur. (Perhaps, after the Pagoda.) The columns are an interesting twist in that they lack capitals and bases, and have instead of fluting, slits up two sides, as well as a band a third of the way up at the same level as the floor plate of the second floor. The building primarily houses provincial government offices.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3267/2550895925_8265e4cf77_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wesbender/2550895925/)
Wes Bender (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wesbender/)

CN Rail Station, Port Arthur. 1905. Romanesque and Château combination.

The building today houses seasonal attractions including a Chinese-Canadian restaurant, coffee shop, ice cream parlour, children's museum, model train club, and lounge. It is the only remaining CN Rail station in Thunder Bay.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2388/2938227184_72fdaa4e75_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2938227184/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

McVicar Manor. Queen Anne. Now a bed and breakfast with very high prices (but it you like historic architecture, it's worth it.) Once a farm house, it has since been swallowed up by our downtown. (But you can't even tell its downtown from the property.) It's the centrepiece of the proposed Harrington-Ray Architectural Conservation District.

Fort William

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3235/2723639994_5e448d0d2a_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2723639994/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

Royal Edward Arms Hotel. 1928. 8 storeys. Dorr and Dorr. Art Deco stylization of Neo Gothic architecture. (Perhaps it is mocking the Whalen Building?)

Originally a hotel, it is today a low income seniors residence. Queen Elizabeth II stayed in the hotel during a visit in the 1970s.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3273/2718213670_c33e9e6df2_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2718213670/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

CP Rail Station. 3 storeys. Edwardian.

Located south of Downtown Fort William, the building was recently restored. Unlike the CN station in Port Arthur, the CP station is capable of being reverted to an operating passenger rail terminal should VIA Rail ever resume service here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3275/2688756358_a407b9d851_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2688756358/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

Murphey Mansion. Home of James Murphy, a local coal tycoon. One of several turn-of-the-century mansions in the Ridgeway area of Fort William.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/2703297712_7bd6c3c7f1_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2703297712/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

Sandstone Court. One of the large houses in the Ridgeway area of Fort William. This house is notable for being a Romanesque style home. Romanesque architecture was typically used for institutional buildings (such as Ontario's legislature, which is a fantastic example of the style.)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/2847152383_f0730368e0_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2847152383/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

Old Bank of Montreal. Corner of Simpson and Victoria. Unknown date, architect. The building is a very simple Beau Arts with some Art Deco-esque details along the top.

The Ukrainian Credit Union moved out of the building a couple weeks ago, and it is now vacant. Its fate is uncertain.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3238/2842396681_52a73b3c62_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14224095@N06/2842396681/)
Patrick Chondon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14224095@N06/)

Ruins of the Canadian Bank of Commerce on Victoria Avenue. 1911. Architect V.D. Horsbugh. Beaux Arts. The façade was made of clay imported from England. They sure got their moneys worth! The cause of the fire could not be determined. The façade will remain standing, for use in a future project. (The only acceptable application of façadism, imo.)

I leave you with a panoramic photo of the area the last two buildings come from:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3250/2845407694_4f930406a7_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/2845407694/)
Mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/)

This is the proposed Victoria Avenue Historical Architecture Conservation District. The area along Victoria Avenue from May Street to Simpson Street was recognized as an area having the potential to be a conservation neighbourhood because it is the only street in Thunder Bay with the "New York Skyscraper Canyon Effect", albeit on a much smaller scale.

Habitat 67 is a housing complex and landmark located on the Marc-Drouin Quay on the Saint Lawrence River at 2600, Pierre Dupuy Avenue in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Its design was created by architect Moshe Safdie based on his master's thesis at McGill University and built as part of Expo 67.

WTF?????????????????

How much do those places go for?

Anyway the apartment I found is a 3 bedroom flat and costs $399,000 Canadian.

This was 2 years ago!

It was designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment building. Modular, interlocking concrete forms define the space. The project was designed to create affordable housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a garden. The building was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle people would live in increasingly crowded cities around the world.

The complex was originally meant to be vastly larger. Ironically, the building's units are now quite expensive rather than "affordable" due to its architectural cachet.

"Of the 900 apartments planned for this gigantic building block, 158 were completed. 354 prefabricated individual containers are stacked in a confused order and connected by steel cables. Projections and recesses are organized in such a way that each apartment has a balcony on the roof of the apartment immediately below."

The TD Centre is by far my favourite modern building (buildings I guess) in Toronto. I haven't been able to take a photo that does it justice though.

There are a lot of OT threads here, so lets get more on topic. This is a thread to show off nice buildings of any size / type.

Here is an example of a cool house in Calgary http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=10627

I actually had the pleasure of seeing the inside of that building a year or so ago; the owner of the house, Marian Liptak, designed it himself. Very cool.

Here are some Halifax highlights:

The most dominant landmarks are the Citadel and Town Clock, which was built in 1802 and still running:

Another interesting pick is the Sambro Lighthouse. This is the oldest continually operating lighthouse in North America - it was built in 1760. There are dozens or hundreds of lighthouses still around NS:

Another landmark is the ten storey tower in Fleming Park, built in 1908 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the elected assembly in Halifax (2008 marks its 250th anniversary - it is the oldest in Canada and one of the oldest in the world):

^I agree. They're great pictures and Montreal has some awesome architectural quality and variety but 100+ pictures in one post seems a bit much for the purposes of this thread (and it really slows things down). Save some for the other Montreal forumers to post! :(

Anyways, as much as Montreal has some great old buildings, I really like its modern architecture. Montreal may not have had any new tall signature towers for awhile but they've done an amazing job with new infill. There is an appreciation for architecture in Montreal that just gets diluted in competition against the all mighty dollar in most other areas of Canada. I know in Vancouver at least that interesting architectural features are regularly cut by developers to save money. I understand it from a business perspective but it really does a disservice to the city in my opinion. And you'd think people who spend their lives developing buildings would have more appreciation for quality architecture.

Montreal's old architecture is unmatched in the rest of Canada. And I agree it's newer infill is stunning as well for the most part.

It's not bad at all, actually Hamilton is one of the more interesting cities in Canada in terms of architecture and urban form, most people just haven't really looked at it too closely.

Can we please try to keep it to 3 or 4 pictures per post? Martin Mtl, posting 30 pictures of every building in Montreal is really unnecessary.

Yeah, I admit I went overboard with this one.

I give Montreal mad props, reminds me of a European city. Shit maybe I should go live there one day and do something I thought I'd never do, put my 10 years of french immersion education to good use.

I think for Canada's big 3 Montreal is best if you want a European feel, Toronto is if you want a true world mix and Vancouver if you want more of an Asian feel. Of course all 3 give a great Canadian feel

Our armour looks like Hamilton's and Calgary's. I'm guessing they either had the same architect or were following the same general style for armouries across the country.

I don't have a picture of ours. :(

Probably the latter. Toronto's old armory was in the same style too.

There are armouries in most cities in Canada, I will post a few that I have photographed because in many cases they are among the most impressive buildings in smaller towns and cities. They all have a similar look.

Some of these are no longer military (for example, the one in London is part of a hotel). The one in Hamilton is still a military base.

The one in Halifax is fairly elaborate and made of stone. It is unique since it was designed with fully electric lighting (in the 1890s) and had a steel instead of wooden frame:

Armouries were built in cities and towns across the country during roughly the same period.

Ours is almost exactly like the one in Galt. It's still active too, they have military trucks and everything. Part of it is open to the public as a museum, though.

i think its funny that almost everyone has posted old buildings...does this mean that people dont like modern buildings or that canada doesnt have any good ones?

for me montreal is not all that similar to a european city...it has a great urban quality, but it does its own thing....i have never been in any european city that i thought reminded me of montreal....it is still north american at heart...if anything, it bears more resemblance to some of the great eastern american cities like boston and new york.

^^agree that Montreal has more similarities to NE United States than Europe. People say it seems European because of the people and culture.

"i think its funny that almost everyone has posted old buildings...does this mean that people dont like modern buildings or that canada doesnt have any good ones?"

I think it's pretty unfortunate. Canada has lots of great modernism, but most people don't like it.

Now that it is gone, I have come to appreciate this particular example of modernism:

I did an entire thread on that kind of architecture: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=155108

Some of it is nice, a lot of it has been neglected, and people generally don't see any value in it. I guess it's similar to Victorian architecture: it went out of style and people saw it as old and expendable, but eventually it started to be valued.

People say it seems European because of the people and culture.

This seems a little strange to me because English is also a European language. Montreal's culture is a kind of reinterpretation of European culture much like New York's, except the weighting of French influence compared to English is much higher.

As for modern buildings, they're under-appreciated but it is also true that most Canadian cities don't have very good ones (of course, many of these cities don't have exceptional historical buildings either).

flar
Dec 1, 2008, 5:30 AM
^^But English culture dominates North America, it doesn't seem foreign or European to most. In comparison, Montreal seems exotic.

It's also true that Canadian cities generally just don't have a lot of great architecture. Buffalo's architecture blows away that of most Canadian cities.

Okay. Is your argument that people think Montreal is exotic, or that it is exotic? I agree with the former more than the latter, although neither one is false.

Personally I've grown up with both English and French and a combination of "English Canadian" and Quebec culture. They are both roughly equally non-exotic ("endotic"? by definition not exotic from a national perspective), and both have roughly equal advantages and disadvantages, although Quebec tends to be more fun.

I agree .. Montreal definately has the northeast US city look. Alot of resemblence to Boston and NYC. Those rowhouses are great .. and common in both US cities mentioned.

Montreal and the northeast US cities were originally developed at a time when european influence was still fresh in mind, you can see some examples of european design.

Strange maybe, but I still think it was a brilliant concept that could have made a lot of high density apartment buildings much more humane and livable if developed further. Instead most developments from that time period tended toward Le Corb's towers in the park which are not a great addition to any cities urban fabric.

Great list though. Although it seems unfair to put Habitat in that company, a lot of the rest is just kitsch.
