so occasionally I will set foot inside one of them to get a hot chocolate

I refuse to buy their stale donuts, their disgusting soup, their horrid sandwiches but I could deal with the hot chocolate

so I grab one on my break and it was too hot to drink so I left it closed up until i got back to work. So i finally open it to discover I have been served brown tasteless hot water :hell:

its too late to go back now as my break time is all used up

so the one thing I could deal with is now to be no more

just had to whine

I've had a couple of incidents at Tims...

Back in 2002, a Chili bread bowl made me sick.

In 2003 I got kicked out from a Tim's while I was studying and I boycotted them for a year.

Actually, I believe they are now owned by the parent company that owns the Wendy's restaurant chain which is American. AFAIK they have been American owned for at least three years.

In 1995, Tim Hortons merged with Wendy's International, Inc., giving new focus and impetus to the expansion of the Tim Hortons concept in the United States. Tim Hortons locations can presently be found in Michigan, Maine, Connecticut, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York, with responsible expansion continuing in these core markets. The Canadian operation is 95% franchise owned and operated, and plans in the U.S. call for the same key strategy to be implemented as expansion progresses. Currently, there are more than 2,800 stores across Canada, and over 400 locations in the United States.

In March 2006, Tim Hortons completed an initial public offering of the company and was fully spun off as a separate company as of September 29, 2006. Tim Hortons trades on the NYSE and TSX (THI).

I've never understood the cult of Tim Hortons in Canada. I don't find it special in any shape, way or form. I do like their bottle orange juice, but honestly, I like most 100% pure orange juice, so that alone doesn't make them very unique.

Yeah, I did a full out PR Project in 06 on TH...so as mentioned above, their profit gain was so high they spun off so it is Canadian, again. But being Canadian or American I think though has nothing to do with their quality of service.
People fuck up though and no company will offer perfect service except in the Land of Oz. Some people just happen to catch them on a bad day when a 16 year old trainee gives you a triple triple instead of a regular.
Being from Hamilton though  don't subject me as being bias towards Timmys lol, I'm just another example of those Canadians you see in public with a large double double in their hand who see it as a cup of coffee and not a 'cult', it's just always been there for us when we need one!

The thing that I find funniest about Tim Horton's coffee is that a lot of the people who rave about how good the coffee is order double-double's, which has so much cream and sugar in it that you can barely taste the coffee anyway.

I'm amazed at it's continued popularity though - I was in Edson Alberta a few weeks ago and on a sunny day, cars were waiting 20+ minutes in the drive-thru lineup. At Waterfront Centre on a weekday morning people will wait 10+ minutes in line.

As far as Downtown Vancouver - I'd definitely like to see another chain thrown into the mix. Particularly in the central part of downtown where there are too many Blenz and Starbucks.

I don't find the quality of Timmy's donuts to have declined at all since the move to frozen dough, but I am genuinely unhappy with the fact that after the purchase by Wendy's and the subsequent streamlining of the menu they stopped making cakes and pies. A slice of Timmy's chocolate cake was sublime.

I'm a coffee drinker, but find nothing special about their coffee. To frequent Timmy's in such a coffee-rich city like Vancouver makes no sense to me.

Hence my cult comment. I've seen that happen in Kelowna too. They had to widen a road leading up to a Tim Horton's because the traffic was spilling on to the highway.

I always found the cult like status of Tim Horton's a bit strange. I think it makes sense if you live in some bland suburb in Ontario where your coffee options are limited and you're trying to be patriotic by patronizing a Canadian owned chain.

But it makes no sense in Vancouver where there are plenty of small non-chain Canadian owned places selling good coffee. On top of that, all the local chains like Blenz, Bean Around, Cafe Artigiano, are much better anyway.

I consider myself a Coffee connoisseur, and let me tell you Vancouver isn't one of the best coffee cities in the world. lol Where did you even get that idea? This isn't Seattle, nor is it any city in Europe. Hell, South America has a lot of coffee cities better than ours.

I've tried a lot of these one off coffee houses and for a person that likes his coffee with just 1 cream like myself, none of them have wowed me. I'll admit places like Bean Around the World or Cafe Artigiano have better coffee than Tim Hortons, but not by much. Tim Hortons coffee is damn good.

The other reason Tim Hortons is so great is because it's convenient. Name me one other place that I can pick up a coffee through a drive thru in the morning not called Starbucks (hate their coffee).

I love Timmy's.
I know it's not real coffee but their double double product sure is tasty when it's hot. When your craving a real coffee Timmy's won't do, but when you've been outside in the cold for a bit, nothing feels/tastes quite like a timmy's double double.

Not a fan of their donuts but their soups and sandwichs are way better then the typical fast food joint. Plus you can wear your toque inside and not feel out of place, and there's always Roll up the Rim to Win.

I think it's pretty much the fact that it's the cheapest option out there for a coffee shop. At least now that most Robin's or any other option has disappeared. There's like 30 of them in the St. John's metro area. Pretty much can't drive four blocks without seeing one. I think I need to draw a map some day and see where the coverage is lacking.

I think Tim's coffee is pretty undrinkable. I usually go to Starbucks because it's familiar and convenient, although it isn't wonderful either.

But what *is* wonderful are those Tim's breakfast sandwich!! Mmm, hands down, they win the breakfast sandwich category. I'd absolutely wait 10 minutes in line for one of those.

Ice caps are pretty good too and very reasonably priced. The donuts are on par with its coffee. I actually like Safeway best for their donuts - usually fresh and fluffy. Tim's donuts are too heavy. Uck.

Exactly. Actually, the double-double is my coffee of choice when I'm hungover because it is so sweet and watered down that it's a little easier to swallow than most other coffee. But other than that I avoid it (and the lineups) like the plague.

I do like Tim Horton's coffee for the same reason I still sometimes eat at McDonald - nostalgia. On a good day, TH coffee is good to pretty good but I find it's really hit and miss. Somedays I get a coffee that just tastes....weird. As far as the food there goes, there sandwiches aren't too bad and when the donuts are fresh, they can be good too. But I swear NEVER to order another doughnut with chocolate icing on the top to go as all the chocolate icing just sticks to the inside of the damn bag!
But yeah, TH is one of the cheapest places to get coffee and they give me a discount for a travel mug, unlike the many of the coffee places I've been to in the city (Waves, I'm looking at you!)

The Tim Horton's soup and sandwiches are pretty good. I've never found the coffee to be anything special and I tend not to drink it with much, if anything, added.

Usually for me the problem with hot chocolate is that they put way too much sugar in. Basically it serves as a drink for kids and people who find coffee too strong.

:iagree:

BINGO! This has been my biggest gripe with Tim Hortons for a long time now. Perhaps their best donut -- the maple glaze -- is also most susceptible to icing destruction due to, as you put it, "the damn bag"!

Doesn't Tim Hortons have access to a few engineers or mad scientists who can create a stick-free donut bag? I swear we should start a campaign to end this... Are we the only Canadians who are irritated by this?

Yume-sama
Dec 4, 2008, 4:30 PM
They could wrap each doughnut individually in a papery thing like the Japanese do.

But then they'd up the price of the doughnuts by like 10 cents and we would have riots... again.

Yes, our politicians can do whatever and Canadians will not speak out, but RAISE THE PRICES AT TIMMY HO'S AND WE WILL RESPOND!

Well since I have a Tim's about a two minuet hop from my work then I gotta admit I do drink alot of their coffee, and I will continue to do so until I dont have a Tim's conveniently located next to where I spend half my awake time. Its not great coffee by any means but its still coffee and its good enough for me, I dont always need the best of the best, usually cheap coffee is good enough for me. Infact the cheap coffee is often times better than the so called good coffees, you know it quenches the thirst and with all the sugar and cream you get in there it goes down quick and easy andc does its job of giving you a boost. 90% of the time that I drink coffee I just want a boost, thats all, Tim's gets the job done.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I've had Tim's coffee from BC to Onterrible and everywhere in between and the best thing about Tim's is how consistent their coffee is. Not consistently great, but consistent.

In 2003 I got kicked out from a Tim's while I was studying and I boycotted them for a year.

I'd love to hear that story.

I always found the cult like status of Tim Horton's a bit strange. I think it makes sense if you live in some bland suburb in Ontario where your coffee options are limited and you're trying to be patriotic by patronizing a Canadian owned chain.

Exactly!

Where I was (a small shithole town in Northern Onterrible) Tim Hortons was a life saver! But then that's because the only competition were local greasy spoons that served hot dog water. The first time I tasted starbucks eons ago I had a caffeine-induced epiphany and realized that this is what coffee was supposed to taste like all along. Another thing I like about starbucks is how as a customer I actually seem to matter to them. With Tim's, I find the customer is usually an afterthought. I once counted nine employees while I got ignored at the counter. While I like Tims coffee, there is no business I have driven away from more over the years because i'm not interested in standing around for 20 minutes just to get a coffee all because the company is too cheap to hire extra staff and/or pay the staff they have. Starbucks pays their staff better and offers more benefits so it's little wonder I get better service there and the company is 6X bigger than Tim's.

David

I wasn't really referring to the quality of the coffee. I enjoy their coffee once in awhile, but I more often have food or dessert and that is where the quality differs. Here in PoCo we have the "good" Tim Hortons and the "bad" Tim Hortons, and they are both good at staying true to their reputations. The bad one always has gross food that is sloppily made by people giving you terrible service.

I remember there being a few Second Cups in and around Vancouver before there were ever Starbucks - I'm talking about the early 80's here. I remember there being a Second Cup in Lansdowne Mall. I also remember there being a Second Cup at UBC up until 2004 or 2005 before they turned it into a Blenz.

But for the longest time, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland lacked Tim Horton's entirely. I honestly think the closest Tim Horton's was located out in Kelowna, so it was never a part of the Vancouver coffee culture or anybody's upbringing. It never brings nostalgic feelings for those of us that grew up here.

For whatever reason, things began to change in the late 90's when they first started to build Tim Horton's in Vancouver, but even then, they'd only build them inside Esso gas stations. There seemed to be half a Tim Horton's for every 50 Starbucks.

In the year 2000 I was carpooling with a guy from London, Ontario, and he would drive out of his way to pick up his "Timmy's" before getting to work - and we'd always be late for work because "he had to have his Timmy's" - aaaarrrrgh! that was my first introduction to Tim Horton's.

But by the time Tim Horton's started opening up more shops, Starbucks already had 15 years of virtual exponential growth and had already dominated the Vancouver coffee scene.

So... that's probably why the only people I know who actually buy the "it's Canadian therefore I drink it" crap were the people who grew up drinking it out in Ontario. In fact, it's often people *not* from Vancouver who are gung ho on Tim Horton's in Vancouver. ;)

I don't know if it is McCafe but the Japanese McDonalds' started selling pastries and coffee recently. I don't know what I was thinking, going in to buy some of their pastries. I loooove me some melon pan (unfortunately I have to buy one whenever I see it), and this was... just atrocious! Like yes, it was Japanese quality... but... it was an insult to melon pan everywhere (well, really just in Japan). I hear their coffee is quite good, though. But Japanese people seem to only buy Iced coffee (coffee and ice, nothing fancy like the delicious iced capps at Timmy Ho's :P). Anyways, moral of the story... McCafe is not very good, nor MUCH cheaper than a normal bakery that sells proper melon pan. :(

in coquitlam centre next to the mcdonalds there was a place called McBeans - i always wondered if it was part of the mcdonalds thing...

second cup still has places in vancouver (3 of them) but its a franchise operation so its a bit risky for someone to invest in with so much to compete with

as I mentioned in the retail thread - there is a blenz opening up next to the new London Drugs on broadway @ cambie

I wish Krispy Kreme was more available

at a lot of grocery stores in the states they sell boxes of krispy Kremes - they should make a deal with some of the downtown stores to sell them - truck em in from delta

Man, Dunkin' Donuts is where it's at. Don't even bother with Krispy Kreme!

I love how prevalent they are in NYC. And Boston... there is more DD than Starbucks. Thank goodness!

There used to be a nice Second Cup at the Seabus station at Lonsdale Quay. It had a very useful take-out window. Unfortunately, the site is now a Starbucks.

The Oak Street location is actually inside Children's Hospital.

I like Second Cup. There is something exotic about it (in the same way that Harvey's is exotic, at least on the West Coast)

Doughnut - Robins Donut (RIP). Those donuts were king. Tim Horton's is filling that gap.
Coffee - None, I don't drink it.
Hot Chocolate - Second Cup

I've tried McBeans in Manulife (Edmonton). Their hot chocolate is kind of like Tim horton's, a little more chocolate flavour but not as rich as Second Cup's. Still a much better hot chocolate than what you get at Starbucks.

What's really strange is the popularity of Mister Donut in Japan, which is a surreal, Asia version of Tim Hortons -- complete with mediocre coffee and above-average donuts.

There's some neat history between Mister Donut and Dunkin Donuts. Apparently they were started by two competitive brothers -- and used to be the #1 and #2 donut shops in the US.

I actually saw a McCafe in Montreal over 3 years ago downtown somewhere.

It's at the Alexis Nihon mall/Atwater Metro station.. I just returned from Montreal, and because of this thread, I noticed it. :) It's a McCafe within an actual McDonald's. It looked like a Starbucks-influenced counter set to the side of a McDonald's. Very weird.

I actually saw a "McCafe" at a McDonalds in Langley. The one on the Langley Bypass at like... Fraser Highway, I think.

Oh..How interesting! I must take a look too!
