Canada's top ten list of cars stolen in 2008

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - What do drivers of luxury Audis have in common with those who own aging Neons?

They're both likely to have their cars stolen.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada has released the list of the top 10 cars stolen in Canada for 2008.

Honda again tops the list - the 2000 two-door Civic is the hottest car out there.

Number seven is the 2001 Audi II Quattro Roadster.

The bottom two cars are both Dodge Neons - the 1996 two and four-doors.

The IBC says the Neon is popular with thieves because it's incredibly easy to get into and usually doesn't have an anti-theft device.

In most cases, stolen cars are used as getaway vehicles in other crimes.

The Top Ten Stolen Vehicles are:

1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
2. 1999 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
3. 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi 4-door AWD
4. 1995 Dodge/Plymouth Grand Caravan/Voyager
5. 1995 Dodge/Plymouth Caravan/Voyager
6. 2002 Acura RSX Type S 2-door
7. 2001 Audi TT Quattro Roadster
8. 1995 Acura Integra 2-door
9. 1996 Dodge/Plymouth Neon 2-door
10. 1996 Dodge/Plymouth Neon 4-door

Yep, pretty much the same list as the past few years. I used to own a 98 neon, and know first hand how easy the Neons are to steal (I had mine stolen twice, exactly 1 month apart, from the same parking lot). Doesn't help that they used essentially the same window design the entire production life of the car, which is the problem with most. Newer cars tend to be a lot harder though, I talked with a guy from AMA who had to break into my parents focus when my sister locked her guys in it, he said the fords were pretty bad, but a lot of the new cars were getting near impossible to just jam something in and pop the lock.

surprised the Mazda 3 isn't on this list, considering its been labeled the easiest car in the world to steal by car thieves and police alike.

My 1997 Jeep TJ was stolen twice in Montreal.. first time someone took it for a joyride and left it parked about a mile away... the second time it was gone for good.. stolen right outside of my house while I was at work for the day. Probably a) chopped to bits and redistributed across Canada, or b) shipped out of the Port of Montreal to some war torn country in the middle-east where it was repainted in camoflauge colors and equipped with a machine gun.

At least the insurance co. paid me what it was worth.. but after that no one would insure me.. too high of a risk. What a joke... Like it was my fault I had my locked and alarmed vehicle stolen.

^ because cars are stolen in MB for joyriding, not for chop shops or export somewhere else.

As a result the top ten stolen cars in MB are not "desirable" cars, they are just the ones that are easy to hot-wire. Case in point, here is MB's list from 2007. Can you spot the similarity?

had one from 00-01, stolen haha

6. 2002 Acura RSX Type S 2-door

had one from 01-06, never had an issue and find it hard to believe its
on there as it has an immobilizer.

My '97 Accord EXR was stolen from outside my office in Calgary one night when I had borrowed a work truck to move back in '02.

I got a call at 4am. "hi this is so & so from the CPS..." I knew the car was gone before he even told me.

The cops actually observed the car acting suspicious in & around the Mayfield industrial area.. they were driving around looking for other cars to steal.

A high speed chase on the deerfoot ensued, The cops pitted the car up by the airport. That was the end of that Honda.

Whew, best thing about having a crappy car is no one steals it and you never have to worry whether you locked the door. Or left the keys in the ignition.

Dec 19, 2008, 1:50 AM
^Yeah...Ive left the keys in the ignition in my convertible before...with the top down...good thing its a 92 sunchicken :P

BTW I have also locked the keys in the car twice...and its actually very hard to get them out...1st time me and 3 friends were forced to pulling on the window (2 door so big windows) to see if we could reach in with somethin to grab them...we all ended up on our a**es covered in glass...good thing its safety glass haha. Needless to say the next time I paid $15 for someone to come get them out...better than 200$ for a new window.

Thats why I love having an AMA/CAA membership. Free lockout service :) plus other nice benefits, well worth the $85 a year or so it costs.

Well to no surprise the most popular type of car is the most frequently stolen. Around here every other car is a Civic. Believe me from driving one finding one in a parking lot without locator keys takes forever.
