I vote for:
The Ranch house (Main and Walter, East end). very fast, hot, plentiful and down home friendly staff. Ask for the onions in your home fries.
Good prices. newfi restaurant.

I miss the Cereal House. Egg and I for pancakes, I can't even finish eating the kiddie pancakes haha.

Bedrock Bistro at Parkdale/Queenston gets my nomination for best greasy, hometown breakfast. Also Flintstones on flat screens 24/7.

My second choice is:
Woodward Cafe or diner across from Lowes on Woodward. good grub. 3 eggs special and menu on the wall. go early, pick up your job supplies and home to the project.

I keep seeing cops and city staff spilling out of a place on King West. Across from the Tim's west of Caroline I think.
West Town on Locke street is pretty good as well.

McDonalds... best pancakes hands down!! :jester: But in all seriousness I actually like them...
Big Top (I think it's called) on Main and Sherman makes a pretty mean breakfast.

Big Top has always been good! I used to live in there several years back, Jimmy the owner is a great guy! he also does alot of the cooking as well, it was sad to hear about the sudden and tragic passing of his wife. I remember seeing a article in the spectator about it sometime in 2007.

IMHO as I have had the opportunity to try quite a few as i am an early riser and like a coffee and read the paper with breakfast. All the ones i tried were good. Some cheaper or faster.
Big Top and habour Diner I will have to try, sounds good and real local.
West town: A little more expensive, but great food. Very busy on Weekends and parking could be an issue. Breakfast used to stop at 1030 hrs. Waitresses there are eye candy, which is a plus.
Bedrock: good food, easy access, fair prices. The breakfast buffet was un-impressive and with a heat lamp bacon was very salty and clumped together. I opted for the stand alone breakfast which was way nicer. Can be busy at times.
Woodward Cafe: working man's restaurant but is improving with Lowes so close. Great food and fast. lots of specials with 3 egg ones filling and great prior to a road trip. parking lot is small and tight. But park at Lowes. Good prices.
Peddles: Barton east of Kenilworth cheap and basic. not bad and never busy. small family restaurant. Kind of cool to eat at the bar in the morning.
Ranchhouse, fairly busy with plenty of loyal locals. Very fast and very personalble staff. Coffee always flowing. parking could be tight when full. Fair prices, Nice downhome atmosphere. Not enough time to start paper before meal arrives.
Golden Griddle, Upper Ottawa and Fennel or Brantford or QEW and Centennial, mass produced and pricey, some unique items but you pay for it at $10, buffet. Not any faster and Ommlette kids would do eggs over????
Your or My place main near Locke. ho-hum basic but pricey nothing to write home about, not worth a second trip. Waitress not friendly and just boring.
Egg and I: tried Upper James, Mud and Centennial and Hiway 2. All good and reasonable. Can be busy good parking. Waitresses seem rushed like a sausage factory get em in and out.
Two Cougars: Good food, can be busy with working crowd along the habour crew in the morning but lots of room and doesn't affect service or seating. Fair priced and plenty of parking. Fast. Great location on your way into town.
Christopher (several years ago) very basic and poor service or interaction. If it were a better experience I would have gone back but here's your food and no more contact, Next! no parking.
Helens on Ottawa; Good food, nice staff fair price and fairly fast. parking ?? but very near out door market. Plenty of press coverage over the years. old reliable.
Breakfast Great way to start your day and then hit the Farmers market, either one. Also cheap meal out or a date. Or before a morning stroll along the waterfront trails.

Try the Bright Spot Restaurant at Main and Balmoral, kitty corner from the No-Frills. The have all day breakfast and they have been open since 1932(?).

The Ti Cats and the Egg and I on Upper James must have some partnership because often time during regular season I see Ti Cat players there. Saw Marshall there once as well.

The in-laws always used to take us to The Egg and I when we'd visit from England. I've never been *that* impressed with it, tbh.
Current favourite is Two Cougars and a Cafe.

I'm not a fan of the Egg and I either. We only went once. It was a total cattle call, and the pancakes were too 'cakey' for my liking.:yuck:

Harbour Diner on James North - although I have not been to their new incarnatation.
I've recently been to the harbour diner for the first time since they reopenned. They serve delicious organic fair trade coffee and have the best eggs benedict I've ever eaten!
They have two eggs benny specials on the weekend and a sweet special. This place is AMAZING!

the folks are coming up tomorrow (taking Dad out for an early Father's Day breakfast), so we're going to try the Harbour Diner -- i'm definitely looking forward to it!

I've walked past that twice after having eaten at the Williams Cafe and both times thought I shall have to try there, it looks really nice.

It was great! Only after I'd ordered did I notice they had a board with specials not on the menu (like the lobster/crab eggs benedict, which I'd heard about).
My parents liked it a lot better than the other place we'd been to in the city, and it was probably cheaper at the Harbour Diner. I loved how the cream for the (fair-trade) coffee came in a little serving pitcher just like at home.

Okay, since we've moved to Hamilton we've tried a few breakfast places and here they are ranked by my preference.
1. Harbour Diner - My favourite, bar none. Will be my regular breakfast place. The blueberry pancakes were very good, served with maple syrup, the prices were very reasonable, and the decor nice.
2. Egg & I - I love their sausages and don't mind the speed and feel of a busy restaurant on a weekend morning. Used to be our regular stop last year when we spent weekends in Hamilton working on the house and staying nights at Deb's Dad's place in Caledonia. It is Deb's Dad's favourite.
3. The Big Top - At the top of my street. It was okay, but was very disappointed when they supplied Aunt Jemima syrup.
4. The Apollo - Went once, and that was enough. The eggs were rubbery and the pancakes were made from a supermarket (i.e. Aunt Jemima) mix. It is too bad because it is the closest to our house. At least a half dozen of my neighbours have all been once, and none will be going back.
My biggest complaint is the restaurants in the city (not Egg & I) all open for breakfast at 8am. To me that is too late on a Saturday, and 7am would be more appropriate for the early birds like me.

Your Place (405 Main West) opens at 6 a.m. every day, if you're in that end of the city -- It has nothing on the food or atmosphere of Harbour Diner, and the service can be slow - but they do good breakfasts and keep your coffee full. They're also accomodating about special requests and substitutions without charge, even on their $3.99 breakfast special.
I'd take their food over the Egg and I... Egg & I usually has good service, but the noise can be overwhelming for me. I've also been a little disappointed the past couple times I've been there with the food as well.. the blueberry pancakes I had last week were just some awful-tasting pie filling over dry pancakes.
If I have a choice, I'll always take Harbour Diner from now on :)

Tried it this morning. Yvette was very pleasant and cheerful. Good price and the peameal steak is huge. Positive return trip with family.
