New design!!! Spire should be around 350m. The pic was taken at the sales center next to the construction site. We know the new developer now too, Lanko Group.

Looks like a fusion of the NTT DoCoMo building in Tokyo (the top), the 181 Madison building in Chicago, and IFC 2 in Hong Kong.

Why are these Chinese towers always in front of a random US skyline in the renderings.

It doesn't look very professional does it.

Didn't notice Lower Manhattan in the background until you mentioned it - nice.

Love the design of this tower. I'm easy to please, though, if a building has a nice spire on it.

Kinda reminds me of a simplified Jin Mao knockoff.

Don't you mean an Empire State Building knockoff!

Well if he wrote Jin Mao then I think he meant Jin Mao. I didn't even see a resemblance to the EMB until your post. Looked more like Jin Mao to me and like the NTT DoCoMo Building.

Maybe they use western skylines because they want to let it look cool but don´t have their own skylines so far?

Anyway, I like the design but I also would like to see more renderings. The base looks straight but the top indeed reminds me of ESB - still interesting and beautiful.

Certainly apes the culmination of Empire State a bit--quite the coincidence that the render should be superposed against a partial NY skyline. Not a terrible design, if a little, um, derivative. The visual weight of the horizontal bands aren't helping with its vertical grace, but they will likely be less prominent upon inception.

Well I guess everybody copies everybody else a little bit now and again, right? ;)

they use Western skylines because the Chinese don't recognise them. If they borrowed their own domestic skylines (which they have many), people would know 'oh thats a building in Changsha there', or 'that's Shanghai's skyline'. Anyway, it's just the bloody siding.

Chongqing already has quite a nice skyline that is larger than almost every US skyline save NY and Chicago.

Im not sure why the person above is jealous of what skyline renderings developers chose to show. I could be they chose manhattan because it is the most recognizable skyline (and surely Chongqing is definitely heading in that direction); or it could be that they wanted a prestigious skyline to front the building into.

It doesn't really matter though and nothing to get jealous about. Chongqing is an amazing city and is destined to be the 2nd "Shanghai" for China the way Chicago is the 2nd "New York" for America; Western version of the top city of the nation. ...

Myself personally, I prefer Chongqing instead of Shanghai due to the way they preserve the historic and tradition (building skyscrapers AROUND sites); just like I prefer Chicago instead of NY.

This and the hundreds of other skyscrapers in Chongqing will propel the city forward like no other we've seen.

This reminds me of Mumbai's skyline, or maybe a future Mumbai, if a bit more dense. It's actually a beautiful skyline.

Looks like this is the new design.

This is very likely the final design. Final height unconfirmed, expected around 308m.

They chopped it's crown off! I really liked it. :( Putting a huge helipad on top of the town's biggest tower seems really cliche on an otherwise sleek looking boxy skyscraper.

:previous: oh no. that is too bad! I wonder why? Maybe no one told them that they liked it or maybe they got worried it would be damaged by the passing helicopters. :( they might be keeping it in a basement somewhere.

looking at that first rendering, it seems as though Chongqing is getting their very own Empire State Building!

and they used an american skyline stock image...

wait what

the tower in that render is beautiful. it looks old school new york/Chicago. tall and slender with all the right massing, very nice skyscraper.
