Nashville probably has the ideal urban neighborhood, in my opinion to the west of downtown. It is the Mid Town/West End/Music Row area.

It is an old residential area (like this home on Music Row)

With a new growth of office buildings, many condos, fine hotels, and many great restaurants and stores.
There is density along West End:

and side streets

and one of the finest urban parks in the country.

With several colleges like Vanderbilt and Belmont, it is a lot like Cambridge, Mass across the river from Boston, where Harvard and MIT are.
It is in my opinion, what the ideal city should be like. A great balance of mixed use development, with walkable services for residents of the area.

If we are talking density....it's the west end area. If we are only talking urban...I would say East Nashville...it is the most culturally diverse area of the city...the most politically active.....and it's adjacent to downtown. The built form in this neighborhood...and the development pattern tell a story to the viewer....good times and bad times.....culminating in a neighborhood that always finds a way to make it.

If you are talking the more older and dense neighborhoods, I would say just northwest of downtown. It's the closest thing Nashville has to typical Detroit looking sides streets. Well, it isn't exactly like Detroit, but similar, so maybe this is basically what you are thinking of ?

Like MidTenn1 said, West End is very urban. East Nashville, Germantown to the north and some hoods in the 12th South area are pretty urban. Hillsboro Village is another great little urban oasis too. Some ideas to ponder in these aerials perhaps??

Downtown is a no-brainer:

East Nashville is a great urban neighborhood, but mostly residential in character. It is filled with 1940's, craftsman bungalows that are being lovingly rehabbed throughout the area. It is experiencing a fantastic revitalization.
It is becoming a cultural center also, and has been compared in that respect to Greenwich Village in New York. The is a strong creative vibe that is creating music and arts, an off shoot of the larger Country music based entertainment industry already thriving in Nashville, although the East Nashville music scene includes all sorts of genres.

Make no mistake. In terms of urban fabric, Nashville used to have it in bunches, and at one time in it's history, had almost a Pittsburgh like quality to it in parts. The city though has been hit HARD through it's history by urban renewal, fires, and natural disasters. For example, the entire east bank where the Titans stadium now stands was once a dense neighborhood, but was wiped out by flooding, which helped lead to the creation of TVA. I've seen pictures online. I wish I could find some.
The city's neighborhoods are really making a comeback though. As has been stated, most neighborhoods in the West End, The Gulch, the neighborhoods that make up East Nashville (particularly Five Points), and Germantown are probably the most cohesive urban neighborhoods in the city. There are some real gems around town, you just have to know where to look.

West End Nashville:

TSU - 10,389
Belmont - 9,229
Lipscomb - 3,054
Vanderbilt - 12,093
What's impressive about that picture is the 4 universities in it. TSU at the bottom right (D.B. Todd Blvd.), Vanderbilt in the middle to upper right side, Belmont in the lower portion of the upper left center of the picture....and is that Lipscomb I see at the top of the right corner?
One picture, 4 universities, and nearly 35,000 students...
A lot of cities could boast 35,000 students in one picture, but not many could boast it with 4 universities in the picture.
