Other than the city you live in, what is your favorite place to visit?

For me, I think it'd be Boston. Boston kinda rules a lot.

I like Chicago a whole lot. Going to NYC in a few weeks, so that may trump them all.

Want to visit SF some day soon, but I went more expensive and chose NYC this time.

Chiwaukadison, only exists in the future when Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago all grow into one huge city. Despite the fact it does not yet exist, it kinda rules a lot.

Also, the city is in the shape of a perfect triangle, which adds to its coolness...

New York City, hands down, I've loved each trip. Everytime we go I get to live the car-free lifestyle for a week. Not having to drive or find parking and just being able to walk/subway anywhere in the city I want really kinda rules a lot. I love walking through NYC. Having friends to stay with for free helps a lot too.

Have to do two for this....

During winter... New Orleans HANDS DOWN

During summer (or anytime it's not subject to snow)... Chicago HANDS DOWN

btw, I've never been to NYC or LA, so that opinion may change soon

New York City is my favorite city to visit.

Its the only city I visit that I don't have the desire to come home. Every other city I'm usually ready to come home after two weeks. I was once in Amsterdam for three weeks, and although I loved it, the last week was torture.

I think San Francisco is a great place to live and, if I knew anywhere I'd prefer, I might well move there since nothing ties me to SF.

But for visiting, there are only 3 really in the running: New York, New Orleans and Chicago in that order.

New York just has everything and its transportation system makes it quite possible (easy even) for a carless visitor to access anywhere.

Chicago is like New York only a little less so.

New Orleans is unique with a culture that simply exists nowhere else and that I enjoy (especially the fabulous, but, from an SF perspective, inexpensive dining). And due to its small, compact size (at least of the parts of town a visitor cares about), it too is accessible by walking even though, with the exception of the St. Charles streetcar and some bus service, public transportation is rudimentary.

of the ones I've been to:

New York City
Philadelphia
Washington
Miami
Charleston

I suspect Chicago, San Fransisco, Boston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Portland are going to end up high in the list when I get to visit those.

Also have good feelings about Denver, Houston, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Diego, El Paso, etc etc

This is a hard question to answer. New York is such a behemoth that it's difficult to place it alongside any other city in America and have it be a fair competition. It's a special case that will always be up at the very top.

But excluding New York, Chicago is my favorite city... followed closely by San Francisco and Washington, DC. I still haven't been to Boston though, so it could certainly jump right up into my top favorites list.

Notice my favorites all have pretty decent rail systems. I just can't get overly excited about any city that doesn't have that feature. It's too important to me. That's not to say we don't have plenty of decent cities in this country that either have small rail systems or no rail systems at all (such as beautiful Santa Barbara, Charleston, Savannah, Miami Beach) - it's just that they're all 2nd tier to me.

New York, though not in the winter.

Boston and Chicago tie for second, though also not in the winter.

Denver, Seattle, Portland, and DC also rank pretty high and aren't as bad in the winter as the top three (I ski, so Denver in the winter has benefits)

In the winter LA, Miami, and New Orleans are my faves. LA would probably be up there just below Boston and Chicago if I wasn't there so often for business. It's like that song that you used to love but now is on the commercial for a product that you hate - you still like the song, but there are now negative associations with it. Seattle suffers from this a little bit too for me.

My ever-present homesickness for Boston aside, New York and San Fran for me.

San Fran does everything Boston does well just a little bit better (except for pro sports, of course;)), and New York is, well . . . it's freaking New York!

I also have real soft spots for Providence, Portland (ME) and Santa Monica.

Besides Chicago this ones easy.

NYC!!!! How could you not? It has literally everything within a short distance. The epitome of the urban environment.

next DC, then SF, then Miami, then LA.

Honorable mention to Milwaukee and Madison (which, if it was more diverse, would rival the bigger cities).

Eureka Springs, AR, is the sexiest place on the planet. If you havent been there go. Its like stepping back in time. It is seriously the most beautiful town I have ever been to and its also one of the most liberal places ever. The entire town is on the national register of historic places and every building is untouched and looks just like it did back in 1910.

But this is about cities, so I would have to say that Chicago is my favorite city.

I'm from St. Louis--which I love--so throw that out.

I now live (and attend grad school) in New Orleans--so throw that out.

Otherwise, I've traveled to Detroit, Des Moines, Kansas City, Chicago, Memphis, D.C., Jackson MS, Milwaukee, and...that's about it for somewhat big cities.

I would have to say my favorite city of those is Detroit. The palpable struggle is just so raw and un-affected. I really root for Detroit's neighborhoods to make their due return from the pit of economic decline. I just connected with Detroit the most, I guess, being from St. Louis.

On the top of my list for travel are NYC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, L.A., Philadelphia, Boston, Santa Fe, Miami, Denver, San Francisco. On second thought, I'll take a plane ticket anywhere that's not Midwestern, which I feel like I could drive to when I visit STL for the holidays. Can anyone hook me up? ;)
