Many of them are.

But the same design "language" is used for new models too it seems. See this one for example, hardly from the 70s, but the window frames, back lights etc. make it look really dated.

UTA (Utah Transit Authority) busses (Salt Lake City):

Busses on local routes and ski busses use this livery:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f343/jtylerlloyd/Untitled-87.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2245/2255591731_13a9d0afc4.jpg

There are still a number of older busses in the old livery around though:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2153/2123350556_ba6afbc116.jpg

The new MAX BRT line has this livery on Van Hool busses:
(This must just be a shot taken for PR because the MAX 35 (BRT) route goes nowhere near Temple Square.)
http://www.busride.com/uploaded/august%202008/utah.jpg

UTA's Express busses are more motorcoach than city bus, and they are dressed like this:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f343/jtylerlloyd/Untitled2-2.jpg

Even though this thread is for busses, I'm going to cheat and share UTA's train livery as well:

TRAX Light rail has a terrible old livery to match how old and boxy the cars themselves look:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f343/jtylerlloyd/TraxCityskylinecopy1.jpg

FrontRunner commuter rail has a much fresher look that matches the new bus liveries:

70's design is "in" now.

the window frames, back lights etc. make it look really dated.

Some of it may be various safety regulations. The window frames, for example, are mostly rubber gaskets that can be peeled away for emergency exit. The lights I suspect are a maintenance thing--uniform, cheap, easily replaced. US city busses live hard lives. Everything about them needs to be easily and cheaply maintained.

Also, dated is in the eye of the beholder. Frankly, they don't look dated to me in the sense that they don't look like the actual busses we had in the 70s (more glass, boxier, easier access now--there is actually more emphasis on practicality now and less on appearance).

In the Washington, DC area:

Most DC Metrobuses look more or less like this. There are a lot of minor variations, but the white background with two red stripes is the basic livery. It is inspired by DC's flag.
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/metrobus07-9s.jpg

Here's another version that illustrates how some of the different trunk routes have slightly different
paint schemes. Compare the top of this bus with the top of the first one.
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/pikeride03.jpg

Metrobus also has a lot of buses wrapped in this "go green" livery, to advertise transit's environmental friendliness.
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/metrobus03-gogreen.jpg

The most recent order of buses has a new livery, which looks like this:

MetroExtra, Metrobuses version of limited stop service (similar to the Metro Rapid in LA) looks like this:

The DC Circulator runs on some key routes in central Washington. When DC's streetcars start running, they will have a similar paint scheme.

Arlington County's ART service:
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/art02-35ft.jpg

Fairfax County Connector, sometimes called the ketchup and mustard bus:
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/fairfax_connector01.jpg

Montgomery County Ride-On. There's also a green version:
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/rideon-blue.jpg

There are bunch of smaller agencies, but those are the main ones.

Boulder puts a unique livery on all its trunk routes. Here are a few of them:

In addition the SKIP, JUMP, HOP and BOLT (pictured), there are also routes called the LEAP, BOUND, DASH and STAMPEDE.

At one time, Chicago's livery consisted of Mercury Green, Croydon Cream, and Swamp Holley Orange.

I guess it was too interesting, since now we're Red, White, & Blue.

Here is the Bolt, my favorite of the many intercity bus operators along the American East Coast. $35 round trip between DC and NY.

Old livery:

http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/images/e/e2/Thunder_Bay_Transit_135-a.JPG (http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Image:Thunder_Bay_Transit_135-a.JPG)

New livery:

http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/images/a/af/Thunder_Bay_Transit_152-a.jpg (http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Image:Thunder_Bay_Transit_152-a.jpg)

I prefer the old one. The new one is pretty messed up. It's supposed to be our logo:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/Thunder_bay_logo.png
(R) Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay

You can kinda see what they wanted to achieve with the new livery but you can also see that they failed. Give me 20 minutes in Illustrator and I could make it better. :) But they didn't do that, so they missed out.

In Canada, there was a real hate-on for new looking buses. The GMC NewLook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_New_Look_bus) was manufactured in Canada for several years because the Classic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_(transit_bus)) was too "crazy futuristic". Flush windows are available on North American built transit buses but they cost extra because the mechanics involved in making them pop off in emergencies is different. All bus windows except for those that don't have seats beside them must come cleanly off in the event of an emergency so that people can get out of the bus as quickly as possible. The chunky rear lights are also a cheaper option, Thunder Bay actually pays for smaller ones:

http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/images/0/09/Thunder_Bay_Transit_160-a.jpg (http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Image:Thunder_Bay_Transit_160-a.jpg)

A little extra and harder to replace but they look better.

And we do have some new looking buses that are just starting to come out:

http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/images/1/17/Toronto_Transit_Commission_1555-a.jpg (http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Image:Toronto_Transit_Commission_1555-a.jpg)

A TTC Orion VII NG, Orion is owned by Daimler I think. It has flush windows and a streamlined front. This is the standard low floor bus from the company. NewFlyer has redesigned it's front as well but I think that's still an optional feature. It's cheaper to get the older design and we don't care too much if our buses look like they're from Europe 2015 or not.

Thunder Bay's buses are NovaBus LFSs. NovaBus is owned by Volvo and the design is based on European buses. It was the most futuristic bus on the continent when it came out. :P

So far, I like LA's livery the most.
Its simple, but not boring and I like that Local, Rapid and Express routes all have their own color. Also, at least from the pics posted above, there are no advertisements on any of them, which helps keep a streamlined look.

It also seems like it can be applied uniformly to both old and new busses. From what we've seen so far, it looks like a lot of agencies get a new liverly every time they get a new order of vehicles. This tends to create a rather haphazard look across the fleet. The LA liverly on the other hand, looks just as good on older vehicles as it does on new ones:

Oh! How could I forget! I've actually gotten to design a bus livery in real life.

This is the existing City of Fairfax CUE bus:
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/cuebus01.jpg

CUE is a small system with just a couple of routes, so I didn't bother to list it earlier (there are dozens of bus operators in the DC area). I was part of a 4-person team that designed the new paint scheme for CUE's next order. I didn't get everything I wanted (the maintenance guy want lots of white so they wouldn't have to work as hard to maintain the paint, for example, while I wanted no white), but what we came up with turned out OK.

Here it is:

http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/bus/CUEAug01Revision.png

No actual buses yet, but when they're delivered next year, this is what they'll look like.

Here is the Suntran in Tucson, Arizona. I'm thinking that everytime they got a new order of buses, they changed their livery. None of the buses have a uniform look aside from the three colors of their logo (white, red, and yellow).

^The ones in Austin are NOT tourist traps though. They actually are handy around downtown, whereas the ones in San Antonio drag you around to all the attractions. And they're never passed off as being "trolleys" or streetcarish.

Our buses actually come from a company in Ireland, and the new commuter rail cars for our commuter rail system are from Switerzland.

The problem with the fake trolleys, even the ones with useful routes, is that they give off the impression that transit isn't something to be taken seriously as a contemporary form of transportation. They say "this is a cutesy thing to do for fun, but for goodness sake don't use it if you really need to get somewhere".

They play into the false perceptions spread by the likes of O'Toole and Cox. They are counterproductive.

I agree 100%. I almost didn't even want to post the photo, but I figured itwould spur good discussion. I've tried to explain as much regarding the counterproductve nature of the ridiculous "trolleys" to friends and they act like I'm taking it too seriously and that I need to lighten up. I dislike them for the reasons you both mentioned, plus I think they look like cheap crap.

Buses in London tend to come in one main colour: red. However as there are so many bus operators in London, they add a slight variant to the bottom of the vehicle chassis

My city used to have the Robin's Donuts Bus and the Taco Time Bus. They were wrapped for a couple years. They aren't anymore. :(

Old livery for Port Arthur Transit buses:

The white and green with yellow western text paint job that they used after Thunder Bay was formed in 1970. They had this for only two years. The diesel buses used this into the mid 1980s, when they switched to the supercool dashy stripe. You can see one of the fishbowls on the left.

http://www.trolleybuses.net/pta/jpg/can_m_pta_restored_03_jirwin.jpg (http://www.trolleybuses.net/pta/htm/can_h_pta_restored_03_jirwin.htm)

Several of the trolleys have been preserved and are sitting at the bus barns, no one really knows what to do with them. I think they should put them on a tourist line on the waterfront once the development there is finished. They're not wheelchair accessible but they're part of our history and nice to look at. :)

http://www.trolleybuses.net/pta/jpg/can_m_ftw_brill_43_simpsonmiles_19680922_ss.jpg (http://www.trolleybuses.net/pta/htm/can_h_ftw_brill_43_simpsonmiles_19680922_ss.htm)

A Port Arthur Transit bus at the interchange area in Intercity. Whenever the two cities got into a fight, they'd stop interlining buses between each other so you would have to get off of one system and onto the other here. For much of their history, each city had a route that went to the other city without having to transfer. The route, Mainline, still exists today, and is based on streetcar lines from 1892.

More here (http://www.trolleybuses.net/pta/pta.htm).

It makes the bus a bit darker, it acts like window tint in the summer, so it's nice and cool inside. Buses without window tint are really hot in summer.

Some of our buses have tint and air conditioning. It's very nice. :)

I have ridden on a wrapped bus - multiple times before they got rid of most of them here (Sound Transit still has some, King County Metro has discontinued them for now). It was annoying to look through the mesh (more like a mesh t-shirt than a chain link fence) during the day - it was very difficult to see out of it at night particularly when it was raining. The wrap also made the interior of the bus darker and made the whole bus riding experience more claustrophobic. I think whatever genius decided that bus windows were available for rent should have his/her house covered in the crap.

vid

Probably did, some of us like the nice dark cool buses. I really don't care for the ones that left in every bit of light out there, it's just as bad when you can't see out one window because of glare from another.

Oh now I actually like ad wraps.

Money for the agency + more color = everybody wins.

I don't really get the anti-ad thing so many people have going on. IMO every blank wall in the city should have a billboard.

Totally. I'd rather see buses rolling around with ads on them than god awful 100 foot tall billboards any day. The company gets advertising and the transit system gets some extra dollars. And now when I look back to our old buses in the days without advertising, they looked boring. Plus some of the ads on buses can be really creative.

Oh yeah, that's the special Compensator Edition of the Escalade.

Seriously though, that just makes me laugh at the dweeb who drives it. The Escalade is not in any way a badass car and cannot be turned into one with big wheels and the pickup option. I don't even want to shoot this loser. My normal rage for people who drive unnecessarily large cars is turned to pity for this guy, who obviously has absolutely no clue about his own retardedness.

Community Transit which serves Snohomish County north of Seattle (including a lot of routes to and from Downtown Seattle) has one in service and 23 more on order. They call it the "DoubleTall" - a play on the local coffee obsession.

According to their info the only other place in the US that is using double deckers is Las Vegas.

I think the reason double deckers are used in certain cities are the width of streets and general street pattern. It would be impossible to run articulated buses on certain stretches in old town Copenhagen or through parts of London's medieval streets for example. Articulated buses are probably cheaper to both acquire and maintain (I have no idea about this though).

Cirrus

^
Correct. Since most American and Canadian cities have grids of streets rather than the tight jumbles of European streets, articulated buses are easier to use than double decker buses.

There are only a handful of cities in the US or Canada with areas of European-style medieval-type street networks. New York, Boston and Washington in the States, and probably only Quebec in Canada. Even then, in all cases the area in question is relatively small.

I have seen double-decker tourist buses here in Philadelphia...but that's more like a touristy gimmick, like the Ride the Ducks thing (OMG they are so godawfully annoying with their quacking!). There are no double-decker buses in the Philadelphia transit system (SEPTA) whatsoever (although there are plenty of articulated or bendy ones).

Anyone know why the CTA ordered the new New Flyers with the old front instead of the new one? I think they are going to look dated sooner because of it...

Here are the main buses currently used in Chicago:

These are the newest and are currently being delivered, 60' New Flyer Articulated Hybrids:

40' New Flyers (almost all of them are new):

60' NABI Articulated buses (have been unreliable and have suspension issues, but look good IMO):

40' Novabus (kinda goofy looking I think):

Metro Transit (Halifax/Dartmouth, Canada) has had maybe 4 different liveries since it was created in 1981.

The earliest:

I'm not from San Francisco, but I have a lot of pictures of the transit there. Here are some of its buses. I don't *think* the different colors mean anything, but it's possible I'm wrong.

The first one (grey with red) is my favorite. Not a fan or the orange and white.

There are 2 major bus companies in Hong Kong
1.
KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus).
Since 1933, it has been serving Hong Kong.
It has 3,933 buses and about 12,000 staff, and carry about 2.7 million passengers each day on 399 routes

Its routes mainly cover Kowloon and New Territories of Hong Kong

I like the new BC transit livery better then the old:

I'd say it does look better on the single level buses though, the white space on the new double deckers is a bit off.

GO's livery on their double deckers isn't bad though:

I'm surprised that nobody's included buses from my hometown yet... although New York's buses really aren't that interesting with respect to color schemes. The current blue stripe on a white base is based on a design from the late 1970s which has changed very little up to this day:

http://rmcconnell.com/transit/ny/mta/bus/tn/239.jpg (http://rmcconnell.com/transit/ny/mta/bus/239.jpg) http://rmcconnell.com/transit/ny/mta/bus/tn/3821.jpg (http://rmcconnell.com/transit/ny/mta/bus/3821.jpg)

It actually looks decent on the newest Orion hybrid buses -- I guess that's because of the exterior frameless windows which make the bus look a bit "sleeker".

In 2008, the MTA unveiled "Select Bus Service" (basically a half-baked "bus rapid transit" idea) on the Bx12 route, which necessitated its own color scheme to differentiate "select" buses from ordinary ones. Unfortunately, it didn't come out very well -- just a confused collection of blue waves and "+" symbols, with an oversized MTA logo (so nobody's confused as to who operates the bus, I guess...?)

Although up until a few years ago, there were a number of private bus companies operating in New York City, each with their own unique color scheme. But they've all been absorbed into the MTA, with all buses either repainted into the traditional blue and white or retired.

I go to college in Los Angeles, and I'm much more impressed with the Los Angeles Metro's choice of color schemes -- their livery is simple, yet it stands out. But that's just my opinion.

For me, not much beats the classy dark blue/light blue (navy/sky blue?) NYCTA scheme of the 70's/early 80's. Just plain handsome. Love those hubs!

those buses look so cool and modern. they certainly don't look like the boxes on wheels most buses resemble.

I like that model too, but ironically enough it's decades old.

Are there no double deckers at all in the US/Canada?

If no any reason why not?

Las Vegas has the "Deuce"

I was wondering... what are all of the North American cities that have some form of BRT?? I'd love to see them.

I took some recent pics of Houston area busses..

You know, there's some REALLY nice new hybrids on the street. METRO is buying 100 new hybrids a year, but the newest ones are extremely nice. I've ridden the first issue--higher seat backs w/ upholstery. Much quieter inside too.

EDIT: Here's a sample of the first set of hybrids ordered;
