View Full Version : PORTLAND, Oregon | January 2009 Part 2 (People, Bridges, Streets, etc)

Here’s part 2 of Portland in January. (Link to Part 1 – photos of views, bikes, protests, etc (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=164816)). There are lots of photos here (over 100... some pretty small, but still). Hopefully you don't have to refresh too much.

Any & all comments are always appreciated (but I’ll admit, I appreciate the positive more than the negative ;)). Enjoy…

Another great thread. One thing ive always loved about Oregon is the way the fog creeps along the hills and mountains. The buildings only add to the beauty. Ill have to see if i can get around and take a few pics on Sunday when i go up to watch my Trailblazers!

d00d yr thread sux...

jk.

I really love your use of the telephoto to amplify lines and patterns in the urban environment. There is something very artistic about it, especially with the people dropped in to the scene.

Though a couple pix I thought you'd raided my hard drive:

Maybe we should take a field trip to Chicago to see how to clean up our streets. :haha:

If you don't like those colored houses you should never go to SE Portland then.. you'd be surrounded

However, I will say that Pdx has an effort underway to wipe out homelessness in the next 10 years entirely.

Now what?!?!!? :D (that might have been more impressive if I had used a smaller aperture)

They're not ugly bright colored houses, they're "Charming Victorian Homes." Didn't you read the sign? ;) Out of curiosity, though, how can you tell from the photo whether they look out of place? ... unless they don't belong next to a street.

:haha:

the haze of that morning really shows through here; I don't know how much a smaller aperture would help sans a tripod (which I'm always too lazy to use unless I must).

as for the houses, it's true that they look a bit out of place in relation to the rest of NW, which has a more subdued, northeast urban feel to it. They'd be more at home in SE where garish colors are more the norm and the architectural vibe is more typical of the west coast.

They look like something you'd find in the Bahamas or something. I know that people like to put color into their homes, but those one just really look like they belong somewhere in the Caribbean! Also, the older home you can barely see behind them has a much lighter tone of yellow, plus (I think) the brinck buildings behind that.

I go by these almost daily and they actually look just fine to me. Maybe a little garish but they break up the monotony of beige, brick, etc. and brighten up this little corner during gloomy nw winters.

I go by these almost daily and they actually look just fine to me. Maybe a little garish but they break up the monotony of beige, brick, etc. and brighten up this little corner during gloomy nw winters.

yeah, they really aren't bad. Plus they are somewhat isolated; it's hard to describe. They stand out, but not in a bad way. I've often wondered about the color of architecture in PDX and how much of it is a result of trying to brighten up the gloomy winter. Where New England features lots of subdued earth tone type colors pretty much throughout, Portland mixes that with bright, primaries. It seems to work pretty well, IMO. Even the skyline has more color than your average city, it seems.

Here's another angle on those homes that have created so much discussion:

Nowhere near as many as in L.A. ;)
But I believe Portland is the whitest city over 500,000k in the US.

great shots, definitely does a great job describing why I love my city so much....I might not of been born here, but I was always meant to be a Portlander.

As for all the hobos, you cant knock are hobos, I love them...I noticed "spare a quarter" man, then there is blanket man (who looked like he shaved and got a new blanket, good for him). Then of course there is the guy who is always trying to sell me Street Roots when I am at work.

I just realized that I saw these being renovated last time I was there...been a couple years. I remember snooping around looking at a box of some kind of hardware on the porch of the house on the far right, not recognizing the Seattle manufactured brand.
