View Full Version : Projects doomed from the start

Such as Midtown.

They didn't even get half way out of the ground before shutting it down. And it took forever to get that far.

Wouldn't you think the developer would have known before they started digging the hole that they were doomed? Its not like they almost finished before going under.

It would seem something like knowing you were going to loose your job but putting your last $500 down on a car anyway - thinking that you were going to be able make the payments.

First project that popped into my head:

-Lusanne/Montreux or however they were spelled.

Some others:

-any project by that company Suede living, amatuer hour at its finest
-Centuria? (that's right I said it!)
-that other Apex development in Inglewood, can't recall the name
-The Crossings at The Bridges Phase 2, horribly bad timing to even try and start marketing the project. No surprise it is on the backburner.

-Acera HQ on Crowchild
-999 building
-Curtis Block
-King Edward
-Skytower
-Luna
-FCC II

doomed now.. but will eventually happen but some in another shape/form.

Sky Tower? As in Doomed part II?

Didn't work start on it again last summer? Has it stopped again?

I've been out of downtown for 8 months now. I feel so out of the loop.

I'm not sure if it's the weather or the economy, but Casel has been the same since I think the start of the school year. I think it's doomed, and they won't have lost much as a foundation was never dug.

That was the name! Thanks!

I think we need to be more specific about what we classify as "doomed from the start". Do we mean projects that started marketing but never broke ground before disappearing? (Lusanne/Montreux, The National, Viva, etc) Or projects that were marketing, started digging and then blew up? (Midtown, Astoria, Skytower) At least with these ones we know they can get going again since construction was pretty much underway.

Anyone wanna post some pix'ers of these projects? I'm curious to know what won't ever, or won't yet go up in my former hometown...

Im sure Ill be very unpopular for saying this, but I actually liked Lausanne and Montreux. I kinda wish there were being built.

I'm gonna sit out the slapfight that's just bound to ensue from that statement, but what I will say is that there's nothing wrong with L/M as a concept--it just needed a location that would build on its density advantage and convert the project into something more useful and more convenient for its residents...

...come, let us say, the Alberta Boot site? :D

Full disclosure--I wrote a short deposition to the city back in the day to the effect that a project with that kind of density and FAR in its proposed location should warrant its own LRT station between 11 St SW and Sunalta. Just so y'all know, 's all. ;)

What happened to the King Edward project?

Edit:
I thought King Edward = King Eddie project by Cantos. I realize now that you're referring to the school.

What happened to the King Edward project?

The last 6 months happened. Pretty much they realized it wouldn't be economical in the current market so they scrapped the plan (and if I recall, the plan going ahead was a condition of the sale of the property, so who knows what may happen next there)

And this is the school, right?

The Kind Eddie/Cantos thing is still a go so far?

Oslo and Copenhagen

See this is where I think we are mixing up exactly what was meant by "doomed". Sure Oslo and Copenhagen hit the market at the wrong time, but they will be built at some point.

We all knew Lusanne/Montreux was never going to happen right from the beginning. Now had Homburg-Centron been behind it I probably wouldn't have thought the same...

As much as it may hurt, I'm going with Kahanoff Block, Aura and Cristal. Perhaps I am in conflict with Bigtime's definition with regards to Kahanoff, but I think Aura and Cristal always seemed to be fringe projects.

I think these projects will go ahead.. but down the road... Kahnoff is a HUGE project, and the undertaking is massive. They've always wanted more convention/office space... so I can see that portion going ahead first.. funding is an issue with this project.

Aura and Cristal are dependent on current projects by the developer... Westgate park and Kai Towers are currently under construction, so there is no hurry for those to go ahead at this point. These projects came during the height of the market, and has dragged on.. nobody expected the condo market to flatline so quickly.. so they were a gamble by the developer. With that being said, they are small peanut developments compared to what they are working on presently, so it's not a big deal... I believe the site of Aura is being used for the Kai Tower construction offices at the moment.
