Great pics, thanks

Excellent pictures ! Wish I could have been there though...
One thing I've noticed is that Vancouver does have a plethora of interesting events happening at any one day. The problem is that they are so poorly marketed or have such bad general PR reach that only the "in-the-know" crowd attend.
This event looked brilliant. I didn't see any plugs on any local news shows or hear anything on any radio stations, and these are the sort of events that could really boost business in their neighbourhoods.
A couple of weeks ago my wife was asked to be a guest speaker at a storytelling festival held at Heritage Hall. We had no idea this event existed, and it turns out it's been running for 17 years. It has the same old faces turn out and it's almost an insider's event, but the whole event has massive general public interest. Guess what - the event is short on money - because it doesn't have enough visitors. Chicken and egg, or poor marketing?

It was the first year, they are planning on making it a yearly event. They might extend it to Friday and Saturday night next year as well.
This event was hyped up pretty well even in the MSM. I agree with you that there is something to do on pratically everyday though of which most people don't know of. The COV's road closure list is usally the best place to find out about stuff unfortunately. Perhaps Tourism Vancouver could provided a Calendar of events.
Just noticed that Tourism Vancouver does have a calendar of events although it's not nearly complete.

that would make sense for them to do something like that. well Im happy that they plan on doing this yearly. hopefully it will grow and become more well known.

Thanks for posting these pics Delirium. It looks like an awesome event, and reminds me of a tiny Nuit Blanche! I like how it's concentrated in one neighborhood though... I found that at last year's TO Nuit Blanche, the installations were so spread out that you had to pick and choose what to see and could end up missing some great stuff.
I hope this becomes a successful yearly event!

Someone told me about this last night at around 11pm, so I had no clue that it was happening either until it was too late. Now if we had stuff like this going on every weekend, it would be something....but once a year?

That looks amazing......and to think, that is probably what that street will look like in 2010 as it'll be closed off to only pedestrians only.

its the vancouver "clique" thing
this event was all over facebook - as are loads of things going on in the city these days... i guess if you have "friends" in the know you will have every weekend booked up

I went around 5:30 - 7:00 pm - it started at 5:29 pm
it was packed by the time we got there - they were handing out maps to all the installations - one of them was just tealights - kinda lame
the heartbeat thing was cool (those big things in front of Marimekko) they lit up and pulsed according to the persons heartbeat/pulse
when we got there the streets were open to cars and it was very hard to see things without getting run over as the sidewalks were just too full or where the installations were taking part
I overheard many people on cell phones telling their friends to get their asses down to yaletown
many families there
one of the displays had some kind of text message interaction - never tried it out but i think you could text a message in and it would get displayed in the light thing
one of the cooler things was this guy was walking arounf with a video camera attached to a projector and another guy held a stick with a cubey thing on it that acted as the screen - but the projector could project on the walls really well - but their battery died after only 1 block - i don't know if they ever got it back to working but it was funny watching people seeing themselves projected on the walls etc
anyway... by 7 pm the police had blocked off most of the traffic so it was much better for pedestrians and people were still arriving
i was expecting more music/light interactions as was promoted - never saw that at all
they had a cool ice bar and ice sculpture area at the one bar/restaurant
most all the restaurants seemed to be doing good business as did the stores that were open - nice bonus for them
hopefully they can sort it out better for the next go round - it was ok but could have been more - it was well thought out at least - maps were great and people were very forthcoming with information of what was going on
I put my pics in the canada - post pics of your city thread (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=117697&page=197)...

Novus TV had a segment yesterday on Illuminate Yaletown and GOOD NEWS... it's coming back next year during the Olympics BUT it will be an international competition and the cash prizes will be "very sizable" according to the woman from the organization. along with the olympic lighting displays that will hang above mainland and hamilton streets, yaletown will be quite the bright place next February!

^That sounds really cool. The fact that it will be an international competition should definitely up the ante of the displays next time around although this year's humble start was not bad. Yaletown will be straight bumpin next year!

i agree with Delirium, they should do this every weekend.

I am one of the organizers for the Illuminate event and for the first year (and a very tight budget) I consider this event was very well advertised with the small budget available for marketing. It was a number of city buses, downtown elevators, cable channels, Vancouver Sun, The Province, Vancouver Magazine, Facebook and it was listed on around 100 different event websites. The attendance was far greater than we expected, so in our opinion we did a good job of getting the name out there and the crowds proved it.

so we have to wait another year to have another one then?

If it was so well-advertised, why is it that nearly nobody here knew about it - to the extent that somebody here had to create a whole thread about it ask the many forumers on here "Hey! Did you even know about this cool event?"
???
This forum's readers span pretty much every geographic, demographic, sociographic and psychographic description. Looks like about at most half a dozen forumers knew about the event.
I'd be interested in any opinions.

for something that wasn't known about it was freaking packed - hard to get around and actually do some of the stuff that was interactive
i doubt people just stumbled across it, its not that central
I found out about in on facebook - loads of events are posted on there its pretty amazing the amount of stuff any given day that goes on in the city
festival du bois is on on coquitlam now... big tents set up in mackin park and they usualy have a tent in blue mountain park
got o facebook and search for "festival du bois" it will fill you in - its a festival celebrating maillairdville's french heritage and quebecois culture in bc

Looks like it was a great event. Congrats, Yaletown BIA.
I'm just pissed because I had seen some type of advertising for it the morning of the event but completely forgot about it during the day. Went to the homeshow with some friends and almost walked into Yaletown to grab dinner but went downtown instead.
Saw the pics here and realized what we had missed. Arggghh ;)

good job given this was your first event.
i'm sure you guys will hold a swot on what worked and what didn't but next time cars should be barred completely from beginning to end. it's yaletown.. people don't need to drive there.
also, seeing as this is a late night/adult event, it would be great to have beer gardens and dj's playing in the streets.

I'd heard about it well before it occurred. Can't quite recall how. Numerous family members seemed to know about it (even my mother). I'm sure somebody here mentioned it, and I probably read about it in 24 Hours or something like that as well. None of my friends knew about it though. I'm sure it could have been better advertised but as it was it certainly attracted enough people.

As we were not expecting that many people to attend the event a decision was made to leave the streets open this year and we had three traffic police to keep the speed of vehicles down. Next year Hamilton and Mainland will both be pedestrian only for the Olympics, so the streets will be shut for the event. Hopefully people will use the new Canada Line station to attend this event in future years.

We did have plans for a number of music stations throughout the event but the City of Vancouver would only allow us a permit for one at Section 3 restaurant and this had to be unplugged at 9.30pm. Next year we are going to look at siting at beer garden somewhere in the show site.

this is problem with Vancouver. 9:30? no wonder we're laughed at. does the city really think that people living in the heart of Yaletown would really care if one event a year has noise past GASP 11 or 12pm? the horror!
good luck in getting beer gardens next year. hope it works out.

The only problem is that if it's raining, Yaletown sucks to be in. Most of the venues were outdoor and the crowds would've totally depended on weather.
