Fringe Moving Production To Vancouver
By Steve West: 2009-02-23 21:49:30

Fringe Moving Production To Vancouver It looks like New York City is losing its recent luster and lure for production companies as Warner Bros. Television has announced when Fox’s Fringe is picked up for a second season the show will move to Vancouver, Canada. The series about FBI agents following leads on weird anomalies on the fringes of science takes place in Boston, but has been filmed in NYC as a result of the NYC film/TV production tax incentive program.

According to Entertainment Weekly that program has run out of money and Governor David Paterson isn’t planning to reinvest. Because of economic concerns Warner Bros. feels they’ll need to move to Vancouver to cut costs. So we’re right back where we were and all of the money put into this program has now been lost. Well not lost because the incentive was so popular it brought a number of high profile shows to NYC like 30 Rock, Ugly Betty, and Gossip Girl. But the intent was to help drive the economy in the city, and with Gov. Paterson not backing the future of this incentive all of the potential is up in the air.

Current NYC filmed shows like Life on Mars could very well make the same move as Fringe in the next season. Ugly Betty, which only recently moved shooting to NYC, will remain where it is.

'Fringe' about to cross border to Canada

In an unending search for better tax breaks, the producers of Fox TV's big-budget, weird-things-happen-to-FBI-investigators dramatic series Fringe is reportedly uprooting from New Yorkand moving production to Vancouver.

The costly hit show, with a multimillion dollar budget per episode, had been looking to relocate after tax incentives for films and TV shows shooting in New York state started to look less certain. A report in the business publication Crain's New York Business reported Friday that the state incentives proved so popular (with shows such as Ugly Betty and HBO's In Treatment moving to New York), that the tax program basically ran out of money prematurely.

Yet, the move may also suggest the renewed attractiveness of Canada as a destination for large U.S. productions. In the current economic climate, big shows are even more willing to change locales aggressively. In fact, the original pilot episode for Fringe, which is supposed to have taken place in Boston, was actually shot in Toronto.

But when the Canadian dollar rose on par to the American greenback, the diminishing advantage of shooting in Canada and New York state tax breaks helped lure Fringe across the border to New York City. Now with the lower loonie, the rumour was that Toronto (and possibly Chicago) was in the running as the show's new production location. However, the word spreading throughout the industry this weekend was that Vancouver will be the new destination. Producers of the show were not available for comment Sunday.

New York City’s loss is Vancouver’s gain as Fox’s big budget sci-fi series Fringe is moving production here.

The change is also a homecoming for the show’s lead actor, Joshua Jackson. The Vancouver-born hottie plays an FBI agent who solves unexplained phenomena.

Fringe is actually set in Boston, but the first season was filmed in New York after that city offered better tax incentives as part of a $658-million US fund, according to Jaunted.com.

The incentive became so popular — Ugly Betty moved production to New York from Los Angeles because of it — that the money ran out Feb. 1, five years sooner than expected.

With New York Gov. David Patterson saying the fund will not be replenished, other productions could soon follow Fringe to Vancouver.

Maybe we can all apply to be extras and die in some weird and twisted horrible way! With the ocean, perhaps we can be gobbled up by sea creatures!

Anything by JJ Abrams is amazing. It would be great for Vancouver to grab some more top series.

Awesome! Fringe will only add to Vancouver's dominance in the sci-fi/mystery genre of film and tv production.

If our dollar stays around 80 cents, I wouldn't be surprised to see some more shows move here.

Well, all I have to say is that it's a high-quality show:

FRINGE's pilot aired in September, and at $10-million it was the most expensive tv pilot in history. Here's 3 mins of that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiUMDmTI-40

And here's the trailer for the pilot:

I've seen a few trailers and have noticed a few downtown shots...one at Coal Harbour and the other by the Royal Bank tower.

About a month ago, they were filming along the entire sidewalk of TV Towers about the time the building was completed. They started near the corner closest to the library, with Lance Reddick (who plays the black homeland security character) and Joshua Jackson talking before walking, then stopping near the middle between the two buildings and talking a bit more, then walking to the end.

A bit later, around the corner at the entrance to TV Towers retail space closest to CBC, they were filming a scene where a very beat-up FBI agent Charlie Frances (black eye anyhow) played by Kirk Acevedo was getting into his car. I suspect the scenes were totally unrelated, just making use of the same location for filming to get two "street scenes" completed at the same shooting.

In the scene where the two actors were walking along the sidewalk, I'm curious how they film it so you can't really tell that there are no store fronts. My guess is they just filmed it close up on them so you couldn't see the "for lease" signs lining the retail spaces of the building on the Robson side.

And, yes, I agree. Joshua Jackson is a cutie ;) . . . he's quite handsome in person, and an actor who looks "like himself" in person. I've had strange encounters with actors who really do not seem to be the same person when you see them in real life. Joshua Jackson looks pretty much just like he does when I've seen him in roles or being interviewed.

Kirk Acevedo is handsome as well, maybe more handsome in person. If I had a black eye - a real one or from make-up - I'd look plumb stupid. Yet somehow he still looked cute . . . go figure ;). The magic of Hollywood (north), I guess.

just saw it....the season opener was slow. The UBC Chemistry building was Walter's [downsized] Harvard lab and UBC's Irving Barber Centre was the FBI headquarters.

The show feels weird now that it's filmed in Vancouver.

Haha, anything filmed in Vancouver always does that for me because it totally ruins it when you see recognizable features of our city. It alters our ability to suspend our disbelief. Especially with Battlestar!

lol, *move it back to NYC!*

Thank god they didn't try to make a Vancouver building look like Washington's Capital buildings.

Anyone see the first season? Is it worth watching? I've only seen maybe a few minutes from a single episode and it seemed interesting enough.

It's awesome, it's one of my favourite shows right now. I got caught up with the entire first season during the summer....but it's not the same now that it's filmed in the city. There were filming in buildings that i use everyday at UBC.

 Good thing I'm as unobservant as they come! Last week, I commented on someones Flickr photo saying it looked really neat.

I asked what city was it in. Turns out not only is it in Vancouver, I can see the area from my balcony, living room... bedroom... :jester:

About 2-minutes into the opening, the opening scene shows a shot of a tv playing the X-Files. A subtle nod to Vancouver? :D

They're filming at UBC again, there are a bunch of trailers next to Irving with the names of the cast members of the dressing room doors.
