Stadtarchiv Köln was one of the largest municipal collections of historical documents in Germany.
It contained 65000 documents, the oldest from the year 922, 104000 plans and maps and 50000 placards.
The whole length of shelves in the building was 26 kilometres.
The new Stadtarchiv Köln, which was inaugaurated in 1971 was a model for other municipal archives
in the world. The building was also opened for private persons for historical researches.
Stadtarchiv Köln collapsed on March 3rd, 2009, as the ground on which it stood sacked and formed
a 28 metres deep crater. This may have occured as result of building a subway line.
Fortunately nearly all people, which were in the building couldleave it before the collapse.
However 2 perons are still missed.
