Need for `big jackpots, more millionaires' leads to demise of longtime lottery in place of another
It is only 15 but Lotto Super 7 is ready for retirement.
A new and yet-to-be-named game is waiting in the wings, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission announced yesterday.
Its next national lottery will include "big jackpots and more millionaires than ever before," said spokesperson Rui Brum.
The final Super 7 drawing will be on Friday, Sept. 18. If no one on that day has all seven numbers, the final jackpot will be split among holders of tickets with six numbers.
Ticket sales for the new game will begin the next day, and the first draw take place on Sept. 25.
Brum said the changeover comes after Interprovincial Lottery Corp. interviewed 20,000 lottery players to find out what they wanted. "They were asking for big jackpots and more millionaires."
The troubled economy did not factor into the decision. "Not at all," he said. "We find that the prime determinate for player participation in the lottery is the jackpot size."
The Super 7's biggest-ever jackpot was $37.8 million on May 17, 2002. (Its main competitor, Lotto 6/49, has had larger jackpots.)
That jackpot was split four ways, with two winning groups in Quebec and one each in British Columbia and Saskatchewan divvying up almost $9.5 million each. One ticket holder was a syndicate of 10 men and four women in Grand-Mere, Que.
They all worked or frequented the two neighbourhoods where they pooled their money to buy nearly 1,200 tickets.
Brum says bigger jackpots will not make the game harder to win. "The odds are always the same, no matter what the jackpot is," he said. Brum would not say how the OLG plans to produce more millionaires.
Since Super 7 was launched in June 1994, it has generated ticket sales of $11.44 billion, with players winning $6.73 billion. Proceeds from the lottery are used by provincial governments to fund public projects and services.
The estimated pot for this coming Friday's draw is $12 million.

No kidding. I wonder how much they spent figuring that one out.
Bigger jackpots! Now you can be even more disappointed when you don't win!

Wow, has it been that long?
I grew up as a kid in the 90's seeing my parents get disappointed with Super 7 every time they lost. :)
I remember that first commercial when it was introduced, with those two jet fighters creating smoke trails for the logo.
Good times.

I remember the day they unveiled Super 7 like it was yesterday. I was at a soccer practice when two skywriting airplanes flew over Ottawa and drew multiple enormous 7's in the sky. It was really cool, but being 12 years old we had no idea what it was all about until we got home and asked our parents.

No kidding? I thought the odds of winning grow exponentially with the jackpot.

This isn't true. Assuming they plan to return the same percentage to players, larger payouts imply fewer winners. The odds of winning the jackpot are fixed given the fixed rule of 7/6 matches, but they will probably change other win conditions.

What are the rules for who can start a lottery operation? Is it only governments in Canada? And is there a limit on how many there can be? It seems like they are a license to print money, so unless there are some crazy restrictions I would think we would be seeing at least a dozen national ones.

I don't think any old joe can start a lottery. You've got the government ones like 6/49 and Super 7 and then the dream-home type ones that are always for charity. Can't think of any others.
Are the dream home lotteries failing in any other cities? For years the ones here have had poor sales and always whine to the media with a couple days to go that they're doing badly. You think they would have gotten the hint that Thunder Bay just isn't the location of dream homes five years ago.

Not sure about elsewhere, but the couple we have in Calgary have been down a bit, but not really that much so far this year. No more selling out of all tickets before the early bird deadline like many used to do.
You know what sells out early? The Win A Motorhome draws by St. John's Ambulance. They sold that thing out in a fucking day. Because want to escape, not get tied down with a house on a golf course. As if there are 7,000 people in this city willing to pay $100 to win a house that will cost them $6,000/year.

The last few years in Regina the Hospital Home Lottery has sold out weeks ahead of schedule and even the Library now holds a home lottery... and it always sells out too... a little slower than the hospital, but sells out nonetheless.
Most people don't even go to see the Hospital home, they just buy a ticket because they think it is a good cause. Also, the hospitals of Regina now have 2 home lotteries per year.

I dunno.. I'd be pretty happy to have a giant house that cost only $6000 a year - this apartment costs way more than that. :)
I meant just the taxes. Everything else would be in addition to that.
Taxes here average below $3,000 a year. Mainly because houses are so cheap. But unlike the rest of the country, their value has increased throughout the recession. Maybe because the value of the dollar decreased?

That's just over 4 1/2 months rent for my not-so-big house in Regina! Even if you could get a mortgage for $500/month on a half decent house, you would still have to pay taxes on top of that.
Or you could always sell it and pay cash to buy or build a smaller, more practical home or condo in a different area and still have a decent amount of money left over. Plus you would have all brand new furniture!

The hospital lotteries in Winnipeg sell out quickly every year.
Of course Winnipeg is a lottery-crazy place, and we probably shell out more "poor-tax" per capita than anywhere else.
That being said, the charity lotteries do have the best odds by a long shot.

I was talking about property tax! And sell it? The subdivision was supposed to have 50 houses, it has about 10. The only people who have been moving into it are the people who have been winning these lotteries!

I know you were talking about property tax. $6000/year is $500/month in property taxes, but you wouldn't have to pay rent or a mortgage as you would own the house outright. If you had a mortgage where you were paying $500/month you would still have to pay property taxes on top of that. Even if the tax on your mortgaged house is only $1200/year over 12 months you're paying $100/month more than for the big house on the golf course. I'd definately buy one if I lived or wanted to live in Thunder Bay! Especially with so few tickets being sold.
As for the Lotto Max...I'm not one who buys lottery tickets on a regular basis (maybe once or twice a month on a whim) so it doesn't make much difference to me. People who buy lottery tickets as a habit could find themselves paying quite a bit more money for them! If you only buy one quick pick a week that's $2 more but there are so many people out there who buy $10 quick picks on the Super 7. For the same number of boards it's going to cost them $25 and more if they want the Extra! Gambling is not a cheap habit.

And for a minimum of a $10 million jackpot. Like anyone would be unsatisfied with a $2.5 million prize.
I'd definately buy one if I lived or wanted to live in Thunder Bay!
That's the problem! No one does! :ack:

Couldn't they have just given Super 7 bigger jackpots instead of spending million promoting a "new" game?
And bravo to whoever conducted the study that people would like more money from the lottery. I bet that cost a quarter million to figure out.
It only appears that there are bigger prices. The chances that you will win the jackpot are actually lower than with Super 7 and the cost was increased 250%.
encore?
An excuse by OLG to produce the most annoying commercials known to mankind.
o
yea i went to buy a ticket 6bucks with the extra WTF? that just cut into my peperoni stick buying habbit when i hit out the local corner store(they make them there in the smoke house) the government is realy getting greedy now...
The lottery corporations aren't part of the government, they're a separate agency at arms length from it. The government had little to do with the decision on how much to charge for the tickets.
Does that store give free samples? There is a corner store/deli near my brother's house that gives out free samples, and not just some ham in a jar either but 7 or 8 different kinds of meats for you to try, changed daily. (Go there a few times a week and you can try almost everything they sell for free.) It's cool.
more then a deli vid its got a butcher who smokes his own meat on site and every sunday morning the nieborhood smells like smoked meat

It's basically double the price for the same number of numbers. And it's not like anyone would have been dissatisfied with a $2.5 million win!
