well I'm just in a co-op term for only 3 months so I'll suck it up with the commute, though the drive will be pretty hellish in the summer heat as my old rustic corolla doesn't have ac. owellz

ahhaha well a few guys in my office have similar commutes, one from downtown, one for north van, and one from burnaby....they say its not too bad since its going against the traffic. Guy from burnaby transfered here from our downtown office a few months back, says the commute is shorter to abbotsford than to downtown.

I'm assuming you're with levelton?

Anyway, there seems to be a lot of high rises on the table....3 more towers on Gladwin, a couple on S. Fraser way, etc...I think Abbotsford might be finally moving in the right direction and the next few years look like they could be pretty exciting

If you know of any, even if written here already, describe away. I only know of the Mahogany, Brio (cancelled), Riva (cancelled), 1 tower on gladwin and 4 at the Red Robin site across from the Emco Building.

I worked at Stantec Abbotsford until over a year ago. Mill Tower looks pretty awesome. I stop by every few months to say hi to the gang so I'll be sure to drop by once you guys are in. :)

it really would've been the eight floor if they removed those stupid silos and built actual floors!!

I'm kind of a newb here so I'm not sure if it's appropriate to post a thread about an already completed project, but my company is moving into the new Mill Tower on Gladys ave. I thought it was a pretty interesting building:

http://www.milltower.ca/

we move on friday, If you guys are interested I'll take some pics and post em up.

Hi Jeff and welcome to the forum! Thanks for the information about the Mill Tower, I have added it to our database - http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=85948

It's a strange building! I see the website says it has only five floors. I can see two floors at the bottom and three floors at the top of the tower, but I wonder what is in the space between them?

Oh I get it, I read on the website it was a farm infrastructure tower in the 1960s and it's been renovated into an office tower. I guess a great place for an architectural / engineering firm to be.

thanks for the welcome. Yeah the middle stories are silo that couldn't be removed. Each of the 5 floors do have 20 foot ceilings though, our office has a nice mezzanine.

welcome jeff :)

thanks

Yeah, personally I think they could have done a little more to make it look better, but I guess it came down to money, and they spent it all cleaning everything up.

Jeff? :D

ahahaha yes sir!

That is the sign on the parking lot on Gladwin.

which corner is this? is it the south east which would be the Parking lot for the mall?

Northwest I believe, based on the description posted. I think it's the lot between the complex with Nando's and Superstore, and adjacent to the new Sandman hotel.

It's the Gladwin Crossing complex's north parking lot, just south of Superstore and east of the new Sandman. Its the north west corner of the south fraser way - gladwin intersection. * *

Here is another dev. proposal:

It seems this one has been sitting for a couple years now. I read somewhere in city council records in regards to the latest Mahogany issues that this proposal is expected to be expanded in area shortly. I am guessing that if this one does happen it will soon as it is the same company that built the Emco Building across the street... which looks pretty sharp in downtown I might add. :D

so when does construction start on this, and when will it be finished I'm assuming they already have the design done for this, right?

I believe they are applying for BP at the end of the year.....construction will most likely begin a few months after that.....

Design is far from complete.....the consultants (elec, mech, struct, etc, etc) have not been chosen.....

I registered on the website for this project and received this email:

"We are now constructing The Viewpoint, the spectacular presentation centre for Mahogany at Mill Lake, which is set to open January 2011. Construction on the high rise portion of the project is anticipated to begin in Summer 2011 with occupancy expected in 2013. Pre-registrants can look forward to receiving invitations to exclusive previews and events over the coming months as we move forward with building the most spectacular condominium homes in Abbotsford."

So what is going on with this project, drove past the site today, nothing happening... The sales centre still looks like it is being used frequently, but I haven't seen them even start to do construction. Is this on hold?:sly:

It seems they moved their completion estimates up a year so I assume construction will begin in the next couple months.

I am getting a vibe that the project may be in danger. Whenever delays like this happen, things don't work out.

Ya I have a feeling that you may be right..sigh and after all that fighting to get it through. But it makes a lot of sense in my opinion, Abby is the definition of a sprawling suburb. I mean look at the population, I think it is 145,000 for just Abby alone, that's not that small when you think about it, but the way Abby is set up.....:yuck: Hopefully one day we stop the sprawl and actually work on making a decent town centre for the region.

:previous:Just tell the people in Abby that living in these towers will make them closer to god / jesus / insert east asian deity here and within 10 years Abby will be the densest city in the word!

Ya I think it's unfortunate that the majority of Christians want nothing to do with cities. I am a Christian myself, but I love cities, I find them extremely interesting, creative, and an overall great place to be to experience the human spirit.

Metro-One
Jan 30, 2012, 4:25 AM
:previous:Do you have any idea why that is?

RosstheBoss
Jan 30, 2012, 4:30 AM
It comes out of the idea that the only way to be holy is to be set apart, removed from the sinful world, which to many Christians and indeed many atheist represents the cities.

While I don't believe that Christians are called to be removed from cities I can see why they do it. They are scarred and often for good reason, there are often a lot of serious social problems that exist in cities. While I don't agree with many with conservative Christian mindsets that a Christian should have nothing to do with the city, I don't blame them for thinking that way.

peterprinciple
Jan 30, 2012, 5:26 AM
OMG...is this what we are talking about on this thread?

The only "Christians" who want to be removed from cities are the fundamentalists who believe every single word of the bible, verbatum.

These are the people we need most to fear. These are the ones who judge others and thump their bibles and point to the fact that they have, "all the answers".

They are "in the world, but not of the world". Thats why they sit back and judge and do nothing to assist. They are called upon to "leave cities in time for the rapture".

"Leave us behind" to care for the sick and afflicted and the homeless and the downtrodden. You, who do NOTHING will be taken up and saved, all because you believe that you are special?

Everyone who doesnt believe in Jesus will go to hell. The estimated total population of Earth since man arrived is about 75 billion. That is one hell of alot of souls to bring back just for one Day.

What a hoax they have perpetrated on us all. Who cares what these "troublemakers" and "Doomsdayers" think, say or do?

They just want control of us all and that is not Democracy. You cant be free in a religious society. Not even, in a Christian Society. Just look at the Pope and the Catholic Church...that is not a Democracy. What the Pope says, goes.

How about we keep it on topic. Bringing religious crap into any thread is just asking for disaster.

DKaz
Jan 30, 2012, 2:57 PM
It's a 10 minute walk around the lake from Sevenoaks Mall and surrounding commercial area including the EMCO Building. Keep in mind this area accounts for a fraction of Abbotsford's employment and stretches many, many blocks.

Sorry for the rant gang...I just couldn't help myself. I guess I ranted because religion was brought into the discussion.

Ya its alright, tough subject..., I didn't want to cause a debate. I was simply pointing out that the cultural and religious aspects of a city can have a huge impact on the way a city is built. No need for argument there, I think its pretty obvious in the cases where it has affected the type of development chosen.

I am glad to hear the project will continue...
It would probably be pretty much done now if they had passed the tower during the original proposal back in 2009.

I don't even know why people will want views from a tower in abbotsford... IMO, this is more appropriate for the burbs:

Hey whatever happened to that proposal for the 25 story building by superstore that they proposed awhile back. Haven't really heard anything about it, or those 4 towers that were proposed by Red Robins. Hopefully Mahogany goes through and quick, with the way Abbotsford is going it's making Surrey look like its got its act together...:D

AFAIK Emco investments is altering the redevelopment proposal of the land next to Red Robin.

Hello SSPers,

I work at Quantum Properties and would like to start a discussion regarding Mahogany at Mill Lake.

If you haven’t heard already, we have repurposed the podium base to commercial use. The first three floors will now consist of office/retail space with the residential component beginning on the fourth floor. At the moment, we are currently seeking commercial tenants for Mahogany. Due to Mahogany’s proximity to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, we believe medical & health services would be a suitable commercial use for our location. We would also like to see a café and spa in the building.

This brings me to my point; I’m interested in seeing what potential tenants YOU would like to see in this location. What makes sense to you?

I would like to thank you all for your interest and support for our development. We have been working on Mahogany for quite some time now, and we are very excited to break ground early next year.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Personally, if I had the choice between living in a building with commercial space catering to the medical field vs. non-medical (Nester's Market, Starbucks, etc), I would opt for the latter. While the convenience of a doctor's office below is nice, I don't want to catch a fever in the lobby.
