View Full Version : Burnaby, British Columbia; Suburb of Vancouver

While these picture forums have been inundated by pictures of Vancouver proper, it is time to see some pics from the suburbs. Burnaby has a population just over 200 000 residents and is located directly east of Vancouver, Canada proper. It is well serviced by skytrain (our metro system) and is also home to the regions second largest University, "Simon Fraser." To the North of Burnaby is Burrard Inlet, to the south is the Fraser River, and to the east are the suburbs of New Westminster and Coquitlam (of which i plan to do photo threads of later.) Although it can not compare to Vancouver proper, i feel as a suburb Burnaby does posses a strong commercial atmosphere and has developed numerous built up areas around transit stations seldom seen in North American suburbs. The most impressive of these is metro-Vancouver's second largest core (after downtown Vancouver of course) called Metrotown. Keep in mind none of these pictures show Vancouver itself, this is all suburbia (including all skyline shots)

First up is Metrowtown

The next pics are taken from a completely different area of Burnaby, i new town center called "Brentwood" also being built along mass transit.

There are two more town centers with towers in Burnaby built along skytrain, but i only have one pic of one and none of the other, here is Lougheed town center from the distance. (the one i have none of is Edmonds)

And last but not least is Deer Lake Park, which sits in the middle of all these town centers and is a great place to walk, jog, bike ride and row all year long. it is only a 10 min walk from Metrotown.

Thank you for taking a look! I know many hate the suburbs but i feel Burnaby has done a good job making them almost as livable as downtown.

It was kismet when I first visited Burnaby back in the '80s. It all came about when one afternnon, while in Berkeley, California...sensing overwhelming hunger, I stopped by the Hare Krishna Temple in order to partake in the free Sunday Feast! It was there that I met some visiting Canadian Devotees who said they were from the Vancouver Temple. They were looking for anybody interested in a ride up north, to help defray gas costs. As it turns out, I had $30 and wanted to be in Tacoma, WA, for a Grateful Dead show the following weekend. They suggested that I spend a few days at the Temple--which was actually in Burnaby--and I could walk to the skytrain, take it to VAN...and on to the Dead Show. It worked out great!

Back then, Burnaby still had parts that were kind of rural/farmish, along with a few high-rises--and the skytrain. It's great to see the recent pics. There are few comparable examples of suburbs in North America, that can claim a skyline like it has now! In fact, that skyline puts to shame many North American cities 2 and 3 times as large. Anyway, thanks for the excellent tour.

Thanks for the pictures; it's nice to see a part of the Vancouver area other than the city itself.

Burnaby looks like it's exactly what you want a suburb to be like. I don't think you'll gfind many people that would have bad things to say about it. Personally, I think that there can be too many residential skyscrapers, but Burnaby seems very nice.

I like that second picture of Deer Lake Park.

Haven't seen too many pics of Burnaby. It does have some really impressive clusters for a suburb. Thanks for posting these.

Finally! I've been waiting for some explorers to get about to the other highrise clusters of metro Vancouver.

Looks very good with more infill on the way while saving some of the woods and farmland.
