Downtown: Bike rentals steering way to the waterfront

A bike-rental business is coming in April to downtown's Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

Kerr Bikes will provide hourly and daily rentals at a kiosk next to the old McCall's restaurant. It will offer a variety of bike types from trail bikes, cruisers and children's bikes to tandems, deuce coupes and surreys.

Kerr Bikes is a venture of Albertina Kerr Centers, a nonprofit serving people with mental and developmental disabilities. The business will provide meaningful job experience to people in Kerr's programs, says communications manager Annie Gannon, as well as opportunities for them to interact with the community.

Parks Commissioner Nick Fish worked with the agency to craft a flexible lease, and Meyer Memorial Trust gave a $75,000 grant as well as a $100,000 low-interest loan to finance the venture.
