I'm sure not everyone will miss it, but still...

Outback Steakhouse backs out of Ontario (http://www.thespec.com/Business%20News/article/535290)
Ancaster, 8 others closing

The Outback Steakhouse has announced it is pulling out of Ontario, closing nine restaurants, including operations in Ancaster and Oakville.

The company has posted a brief statement on its website, which reads, in part: “The decision to exit Ontario was a difficult one, and it was made only after considerable reflection and analysis.”

The statement provides no explanation as to why the Australian-style steakhouse made the decision to leave the province.

The Ancaster restaurant is located in the Meadowlands Power Centre. A media inquiry to the restaurant was referred to the corporate office.

Despite the closure of the Ontario restaurants, effective Monday, the chain still has three restaurants in Edmonton, Alberta.

The company says it is “looking for ways to honour active gift cards as conveniently as possible,” and is asking customers to check its Canadian website again in about seven days for more details.

The seven other Ontario restaurants were located in Windsor, Etobicoke, Kitchener, London, Richmond Hill, Niagara Falls and Whitby.

I never even noticed this chain, to be honest.

what will move into these locations? in a time when big box stores are either cutting back or going bankrupt the answer is nobody. i wonder what would happen to meadowlands home prices if 5 more stores closed down? 10 more? interesting stuff.

I'd imagine it won't take much time for another restaurant chain to take over the space. Milestones picked up a couple of their previous locations a little while back, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Cara scoop up these sites for Milestones or any of their other restaurant concepts.

While the current economic climate is causing some players to fold up their tents, the power centre concept is still considered hot property for that retail segment. Lowes scooped up all the old Sam's Club locations the moment Walmart abandoned the concept, and the former Linens N Things are not staying empty long, with HBC's Home Outfitters moving into several of their old locations.

^ exactly

The same kind of thing happened with Kelsey's in Quebec... they pulled out in the last couple of years and most of the locations are now Madisons NYC (same style, same food). I'm sure something simliar will happen with Outback.

I was thinking Milestones would pick up the Outbacks place, Swiss Chalet is nearby. For a power centre the Outbacks has a good location.
